Only a hard-driven hit may be dug with an openhand "beach dig." Otherwise, the ball must be given immediate impetus at contact. "Hard-driven ball" is defined as "an attack-hit or blocked ball traveling at a high rate of speed, as judged by the referee. In that case, the ball may be momentarily lifted or pushed, provided the attempt is one continuous motion and the player does not change the direction of that motion while contacting the ball." The spirit of this rule is to keep the ball in play longer. No open hand tips: One-handed placement or redirection of the ball with the fingers (a "dink" or "open-hand tip") is a fault.
