After 14 assists on just 19 field goals in a loss to USF on Nov. 26, the Hatters have totaled 74 helpers to just 48 turnovers, which is a big improvement on last season s as sist-to-turnover ratio of 0.84. The Hatters picked up their second straight 20+ point victory on Nov. 19, defeating Southeastern 81-59 after topping Florida A&M 88-66 on Nov. 13. While improving to 2-1 on the year, it marked the first time Stetson recorded back-to-back wins of 20 or more points since Nov. of 2000. Stetson returns all five starters from last season. Aaron Graham (29), Liam McInerney (29), Adam Pegg (29), Chris Perez (28), and Joel Nab urgs (27) left only three starts for the rest of the team in 2011-12. The Hatters also return over 90 percent of their point production from last season. Led by Pegg s 14.9 points per game, Stetson s eight players who saw time last year averaged a combined 67.0 ppg of SU s 72.0 average on the season. Stetson Probable Starters Pos. No. Name Ht. Wt. Cl. SERIES HISTORY This marks the first ever meeting between Stetson and VCU in the all-time history of the two schools. The Hatters have compiled an overall record of 8-17 against teams currently in the Atlantic-10 Conference, which the Rams joined this season. Stetson has squared off against 11 of the league s 16 members, but will make that 13 after taking on VCU and then Richmond later this season. SCOUTING THE RAMS A Final Four team in 2010-11, and an NCAA Tournament team each of the past two seasons, VCU has become a household name in college basketball over the past few years. Led by head coach Shaka Smart, the Rams have compiled a record of 84-28 in his first three seasons at the helm. Wreaking havoc on their opponents in Smart s pressing style defense, VCU led the country in steals (10.6 per game) and turnover margin (+6.5) a season ago. Off to a solid start against tough compeition, the Rams are 3-3, falling to a pair of ranked opponents in #5 Duke and #13 Missouri, as well as Wichita State. VCU opened the season with a big 80-57 rout of the A-Sun s FGCU. Early on in 2012-13 it has been Treveon Graham and Juvonte Reddic leading the Rams with 14.3 and 14.2 points per game, respectively. The steal numbers remain the same - at 10.8 per contest through six games - and it is Briante Weber leading the way with 3.0 per tilt all on his own. COMING UP NEXT After Wednesday s game against VCU, the Hatters will make their way over to Daytona Beach to take on Bethune-Cookman Monday, Dec. 3. Stetson will then return home to host Florida Atlantic on Thursday, Dec. 6, and Florida International on Sunday, Dec. 9. The Hatters will then begin a five game road trip that will take them into 2013. STINGY SOUTH FLORIDA DEFENSE TOPS STETSON USF used a late 8-0 run to hand Stetson its first home loss of the season, defeating the Hatters 63-54 at the Edmunds Center on Nov. 26. The Bulls scored 34 of their 63 points in the paint, grabbed 12 offensive rebounds, and scored 13 second chance points en route to the road victory. Notes - Joel Naburgs led the Hatters with 18 points, just two shy of his career best. The senior poured in four three-pointers, giving him 135 career triples, which is good enough for seventh place in school history. - Aaron Graham and Willie Green added 15 points and 11 points, respectively, marking the 20th and 10th double digit scoring games of their career. Graham also led the squad with seven rebounds, and Green totaled two blocks. - The Hatters shot just 29.2 percent from beyond the arc (7-of-24), marking the first time this season that Stetson has shot below 30 percent from three-point land. - Stetson came into the game averaging 82.7 points per game, but the stifling USF defense shut the Hatters down to just 54 points on 38.0 percent shooting from the floor. STETSON LEADING THE NATION IN ASSISTS AT FIRST NCAA STAT MARK When the first NCAA statistics were released on Nov. 26, Stetson was leading the nation in assists per game with a mark of 20.0 through three games. After recording 14 helpers on just 19 field goals in the recent loss to USF, the Hatters now have 74 assists to just 48 turnovers. The 1.54 assist-to-turnover ratio is a big improvement over last season s mark of 0.84. HATTERS PUT OUT FIRE WITH SECOND STRAIGHT 20+ POINT WIN Stetson started slowly, not scoring for more than six minutes to start the game, but the Hatters picked up steam quickly. SU used runs of 12-0 and 12-2 to gain a 32-13 advantage at the half and cruised to an 81-59 victory. Notes - The second straight win marked the first back-to-back victories for the Hatters since January of last season. Moreover, the 22-point win marked the first time Stetson won two straight by 20 or more points since November of 2000. - The Fire s 13 first half points marked the first time Stetson allowed less than 20 points in a half since holding Jacksonville to 19 on Feb. 26, 2011. - Chris Perez led the Hatters with a season high 20 points. It was his 26th career double figures scoring game, and the eighth time he Statistical Comparison Category 75.5 Scoring Offense 70.3 68.8 Scoring Defense 60.7 +6.8 Scoring Margin +9.6 46.0 Field Goal Percentage 42.6 44.4 FG Percentage Defense 43.3 37.6 3-Pt FG Percentage 37.8 25.6 3-Pt FG Percentage Defense 28.6 64.7 Free Throw Percentage 63.7 35.2 Rebound Average 36.2 35.8 Opp. Rebound Average 33.5-0.6 Rebound Margin +2.7 18.5 Assists per game 13.7 12.0 Turnovers per game 13.2 13.0 Opp. Turnovers per game 17.2 +1.0 Turnover Margin +4.0 1.5 Assist/Turnover Ratio 1.0 5.3 Steals per game 10.8 3.3 Blocks per game 1.8 We are the Hatters The unlikely combination of a famous hat manufacturer and a university getting together produced a novel nickname for Stetson University. The athletic teams are called Hatters, reflecting the University s association with John B. Stetson, maker of the well-known Stetson hats. It all started back in 1883 when Henry DeLand founded the DeLand Academy. Three years later, after a disastrous freeze affected the citrus industry and left Mr. DeLand in financial trouble, Mr. Stetson, who had a winter home in DeLand, became interested in the school. When, at Mr. DeLand s request, Mr. Stetson was made chairman of the Board of Trustees in 1889, the school was renamed in his honor. Stetson University fielded the first football team in Florida in 1901, and the nickname Hatter was used then and is still used today.

THREE POINT RANGE With three three-pointers against Florida A&M on Nov. 13, Joel Naburgs moved into seventh place on his own in all-time Stetson history with 130 career three-pointers made (now has 131). With 40 more treys this season, the senior would become the all-time leader in threes at Stetson. Aaron Graham, meanwhile, made the second most threes ever in a season at Stetson last year with 68. Through three games, he has totaled nine threes, marking the 17th and 18th time he has recorded three or more treys in a game. STETSON SIGNS FOUR TO NLI Stetson head coach Casey Alexander announced on Nov. 19 the signings of Alex Thompson (Dothan, Ala.), Brian Glasford (Miami, Fla.), Asa Duvall (Brentwood, Tenn.), and Andrew Zelis (Wheaton, Ill.) to national letters of intent to play basketball for the Hatters, starting in the fall of 2013. HATTERS HOLD OFF FLAGLER Leading by as many as 21 points, the Stetson men s basketball team defeated NCAA Division II Flagler by a score of 79-71 in its only exhibition of the 2012-13 season on Oct. 29. The Hatters benefited from a 22-to-9 assist-to-turnover ratio and a run of eight straight baskets from beyond the three-point arc. Adam Pegg and Aaron Graham led Stetson with 16 points each, while Willie Green added 12 points and a team-high nine rebounds in the victory. STARTERS RETURN Stetson returns all five starters from a year ago. Seniors Adam Pegg (29 starts), Liam McInerney (29 starts), and Joel Naburgs (27 start), as well as junior Aaron Graham (29 starts) and Chris Perez (28 starts) were responsible for all but three starts on the season for Stetson in 2011-12. PLENTY OF POINT PRODUCTION The Hatters return over 90 percent of their point production from last season. The eight Stetson players who saw action last year combined for 67.0 out of the team s 72.0 points per game in 2011-12. The Hatters six leading scorers (Adam Pegg, Chris Perez, Aaron Graham, Joel Naburgs, Willie Green, and Liam McInerney) all return to the fold for Stetson in 2012-13. YEAR UNDER THEIR BELTS Head Coach Casey Alexander and his staff are entering their second season with the Hatters in 2012-13. While the team saw many improvements in the group s first year in DeLand, the experience gained through 2011-12 can only help everyone involved to become more comfortable and better equipped to succeed in this second season under Coach Alexander. LOOKING FOR SUCCESS IN-STATE The Hatters will face 11 in-state schools in a total of 15 games during the 2012-13 season, not counting the exhibition against Flagler. Stetson has an all-time record of 149-172 against those in-state foes, with the Hatters biggest advantages being a 6-1 mark over Florida A&M and a 19-6 record against Bethune-Cookman. The only opponent within the state of Florida this season that Stetson has never played is Southeastern. ON THE ROAD AGAIN Stetson plays eight of its first 13 games on the road, beginning with the November 9 season-opener at Miami. Amidst the first run of games away from home is a span of five straight road contests through the middle of December and into the new year. Stetson will play Richmond, FAU, UCF, Mercer, and Kennesaw State during that span. RICHES OF RICHMOND As one of the Hatters longest trips of the season, Stetson will make its way to Richmond, Virginia not once but twice this season. Only 18 days apart, the Hatters play at Virginia Commonwealth on November 28 and then head back to the Mother of Presidents to challenge Richmond on December 15.

Northern Kentucky, formerly an NCAA Division II institution, takes Belmont s place for the 2012-13 season. OH BROTHER Of all the 347 schools with NCAA Division I men s basketball programs, only 19 have a pair of brothers playing for their team. Senior Adam Pegg and freshman Brian Pegg are among those lucky tandems to play intercollegiate basketball with their brother. The Peggs are joined in the Atlantic Sun by NKU s freshmen twins Jacob and Justin Rossi. There are six pairs of twins of the 19, and Adam and Brian are the only brothers playing on a team in the state of Florida. HATTERS ON TELEVISION Stetson is scheduled to appear on television five times in the 2012-13 regular season, beginning with the season-opener at Miami on November 9. The Hatters will take on the Hurricanes on ESPN3 at 5:30 pm. SU will also play a pair of games against Florida Gulf Coast and a road tilt at UCF on CSS. Stetson s men s and women s teams will also be part of a televised (ESPN3) doubleheader against Lipscomb on January 19. INTERNATIONAL FLAVOR This year s Stetson squad features a quartet of players who hail from overseas. The senior class duo of Joel Naburgs and Liam McInerney are both natives of Australia, junior Chris Perez calls the Dominican Republic home, and freshman Leke Solanke comes to Florida from Nigeria. NEW ADDITIONS While the Hatters have plenty of experience on this year s roster, there are also a number of new faces on the roster. Four freshmen are on the 2012-13 roster looking to help Stetson improve on last year s 9-20 campaign. Logan Irwin of South Whitley, Indiana, Brian Pegg of Clearwater, Florida, Tanner Plemmons of Franklin, North Carolina, and Leke Solanke of Abeokuta, Nigeria are all true freshmen this season. Also new, but unable to compete due to transfer rules, is sophomore Kyle Sikora. The 7-0 center transferred from Oakland. Hunter Miller had to sit out last season after transferring to Stetson from FGCU, and will be able to compete as a junior in 2012-13. STETSON SELECTED SIXTH IN A-SUN POLL After just missing out on the conference tournament last season, the Atlantic Sun Conference coaches picked the Hatters to make the tournament in its annual preseason poll this fall. Stetson was selected sixth out of the 10 teams in the conference, placing ahead of Jacksonville, Lipscomb, Kennesaw State, and Northern Kentucky in both the coaches and media poll. PEGG PICKED AS PRESEASON ALL-CONFERENCE Adam Pegg was one of just 10 players in the Atlantic Sun Conference to earn Preseason All-Conference honors this fall. He was one of six senior on the list, but the only center among six guards and three forwards. FORMER HATTERS COACH MURRAY ARNOLD PASSES AWAY During a career in coaching that spanned more than 40 years, former Stetson coach Murray Arnold started and ended his career as a head coach in the very same place, DeLand, Fla. Arnold, who became the head coach at DeLand High School in 1960 and concluded his career as Stetson s head coach in 2000, died on Tuesday, Nov. 13, at Good Samaritan Florida Lutheran in DeLand. He was 74 years old. STETSON NAMED AS HOST OF NCAA TOURNAMENT FOR 2014 On Nov. 12 Stetson was named as a host for the Second and Third Rounds of the 2014

The Stetson center led the Hatters with 14.9 points and 5.5 rebounds per game as a junior. TRIO OF TOP TEN SCORERS Stetson was the only team in the Atlantic Sun Conference with a trio of players in the top 10 in the league in scoring. Adam Pegg was tied for third with 14.9 points per game, Chris Perez was seventh with 13.5 points per game, and Aaron Graham was 10th with 12.7 points per game. Those three only improved on their marks in league games, increasing their conference ranks to third, sixth, and ninth, respectively. NEWCOMERS OF THE WEEK IN 2011-12 With a healthy crop of new players last season, Stetson s Adam Pegg and Chris Perez combined for three A-Sun Newcomer of the Weeks honors in 2011-12. Pegg earned the accolades twice, while Perez was honored by the league once in his first season of competition with the Hatters. I m proud of our team for playing hard, and giving ourselves a chance down the stretch, Head Coach Casey Alexander said after the game. The Hatters got out to a quick start, taking a 12-5 lead over the Hurricanes less than five minutes into the game. Graham knocked down back-to-back three-pointers to highlight the run, while junior Chris Perez opened the scoring and closed the stretch with a pair of pull up jumpers Ṁiami used a trio of treys midway through the first to cut the Hatter lead to 24-22 with 7:59 to play in the frame. A three-pointer by senior Joel Naburgs, Stetson s fifth straight basket from beyond the arc, and a bank shot from the wing by Perez extended the lead back to seven at 29-22 with 5:54 to play in the half. Having held Miami s 6-10, 290 pound center Reggie Johnson to just one field goal before the 5:30 mark in the first half, the big guy finally started to give the Hatters some trouble down the stretch. Johnson tallied 10 points in the final five and a half minutes, to tie the game at 34-34 at the break. The Canes came out hot in the second half, opening with the first six points and an 11-4 run that gave Miami a 45-38 lead just over three minutes into the period. The Hurricane lead ballooned up to 11 points, at 56-45 with 11:52 to play before Stetson began climbing back into it. The Hatters did it on the back of Pegg, who scored all 22 of his points in the second half. The center rattled off three buckets in the lane and a three, before a steal and breakaway layup by Graham forced a Miami timeout with 9:15 to play and the Canes lead cut to six at 60-54. The Hatters went on a 17-7 run to cut the deficit to just three points, at 74-71, with 3:06 to play in the second half. Pegg scored 13 out Stetson s 17 points during the stretch, tipping in a pair of missed shots and connecting on three from beyond the arc to keep the Hatters in the game. A traditional three-point play by Perez a minute later brought the Hatters within two, at 76-74, but that was as close as they would get. Miami went on to take the season-opener 87-79. I hope it means we re made of the right medal, Alexander said of Stetson almost defeating the Hurricanes. I think our team has a chance to do really good things against teams in our league and against people we re supposed to beat, and I hope tonight was an indication of that. Pegg led Stetson with 22 points, on four-of-five from beyond the arc, and nine rebounds. Graham finished with 21 points on five three-pointers and two steals. Perez added 12 points, while Naburgs and junior Willie Green tacked on nine a piece. The Hatters were solid controlling the ball, recording 20 assists and only turning the ball over 11 times. Green, freshman Logan Irwin, and junior Hunter Miller each tallied four assists to lead the Hatters. Game 2 Nov. 13 Stetson 88, Florida A&M 66 DeLand, Fla. Attendance: 615 Score by periods 1st 2nd Total Florida A&M 29 37 66 Stetson 48 40 88 DELAND, Fla. - Never trailing the entire game, the Stetson men s basketball team (1-1) opened up its home slate of contests with a convincing 88-66 victory over Florida A&M (0-2) on Tuesday night at the Edmunds Center. Senior Adam Pegg led the Hatters with 19 points, on eight-of-ten shooting from the field, to help Stetson improve to 1-1 on the season. I m proud of our guys, Head Coach Casey Alexander said after the game. I think we really competed for 40 minutes. It wasn t pretty the entire time. We had much more success on both sides of the floor in the first half, but our guys are really trying hard to do what we ask them to do, which is goal number one for a coach. The Hatters scored the first bucket of the game on a jumper from the top of the key by junior Willie Green, and there was no looking back from there. Stetson opened up to a 14-7 advantage less than five minutes in when junior Aaron Graham nailed a three-pointer and then connected on a pair of free throws in consecutive Hatter possessions. SU extended its lead to double digits for the first time when Green slammed home a tip dunk with 9:42 to play in the first, giving Stetson a 25-14 advantage midway through the period. After a layup by the Rattlers, freshman Leke Solanke matched Green with a thunderous tip dunk of his own, igniting the Stetson crowd and sending the Hatters on a run that extended the lead to 19 four times before the half ended. Stetson went on a 10-1 run, beginning with a layup by senior Liam McInerney with 8:12 to play in the half, and concluding with a nice post move by Pegg with 5:27 remaining. The stretch gave the Hatters a 37-19 lead. More than anything, we had the patience we want [in the first half], Alexander continued. In preparation we talked about taking a great shot for our team, and for the most part we really did that. We threw the ball into the post seven times in the first half, and we scored on all seven possessions. That s a group of players that are trying to do what we ask them to do. A layup in the lane by freshman Logan Irwin, and a three-pointer by senior Joel Naburgs got Stetson out to a similarly hot start in the second half. The 27-point lead that Graham gave the Hatters on a breakaway dunk with 17:39 to play in the game slowly began to fade as the Rattlers started hitting some shots, and the Hatters went a bit cold. Florida A&M used a 10-0 run midway through the period to cut the lead to 69-53 with 8:33 to play on a layup by Jamari Bradshaw. After Alexander called a 30 second timeout to rally the troops, the Hatters fed the ball into the post to Pegg to stop the bleeding. The Stetson center scored in the paint to stop the FAMU run. We called a couple plays to get the ball inside, Alexander said. Adam s a guy that can get us a basket or a foul, and our guys know that. He wants that challenge, and our guys know that we can count on him. It was great that when we went to him, he delivered, and settled the storm a little bit. Graham, Perez, and Pegg all hit free throws down the stretch as Stetson went on to defeat the Rattlers 88-66 and improve to 1-1 on the season. Pegg led SU with 19 points, while Graham added 16, Naburgs chipped in with 11, and Irwin added 10. Game 3 Nov. 19 Stetson 81, Southeastern 59 DeLand, Fla. Attendance: 655 Adam Pegg ejected for a flagrant foul at 11:32 of the 2nd half Score by periods 1st 2nd Total Southeastern 13 46 59 Stetson 32 49 81 DELAND, Fla. - Led by 20 points and six rebounds from junior Chris Perez, the Stetson men s basketball team (2-1) defeated Southeastern (7-2) by a score of 81-59 on Monday night at the Edmunds Center. Beginning uncharacteristically slow on offense, neither team had scored by the time the first media timeout rolled around at the 15:59 mark in the first half. In fact, the Fire gained the advantage first, scoring with 15:41 to play and again a minute and a half later, before the Hatters ever got on the board. We re a good offensive team so I kind of assumed it would come sooner rather than later, but yeah you re concerned when you don t get off to a good start, Stetson head coach Casey Alexander said following the game. Junior Aaron Graham came off the bench and tallied the Hatters first five points of the contest, knocking down a three just over six and a half minutes into play, and a runner in the lane less than a minute later to cut the Southeastern lead to 6-5 nearly midway through the period. A three-pointer from senior Joel Naburgs gave Stetson its first lead of the game, at 8-6, but after a triple by the Fire s Brandon Moore, it was a layup by senior Adam Pegg that put the Haters on top 10-9, a lead the team did not relinquish the rest of the way. A pair of blocks within 20 seconds of each other by freshman Leke Solanke seemed to energize the Hatters as a 12-0 run gave Stetson a 20-9 lead with just 6:29 to play in the half. Senior Liam McInerney capped the stretch with a three on an assist from Naburgs. After a two-pointer by SEU s timothy Jickell stopped the run, Stetson rattled off 12-2 run over the final 5:08 of the half to take a 32-13 lead at the break. A commanding block by junior Willie Green, which led to a break that ended with a long range bounce pass from sophomore Dennis Diaz to a streaking Perez, highlighted the stretch. Perez finished, got fouled, and knocked down the free throw for his first of two conventional three-point plays on the night. A backdoor layup by Naburgs on an assist from freshman Logan Irwin opened the second half, but Southeastern quickly countered with an 8-2 run that cut Stetson s lead to 36-21 with 17:51 to play in the period. It was a Perez three-pointer that ended the Fire momentum, and after a steal by Graham, a nice move in the post by Pegg put the Stetson lead back up to 20 points at 41-21. It was just over eight minutes later that Perez was at it again, giving the Hatters their largest lead of the game, a 62-36 advantage with 8:50 to play. The junior guard converted a traditional three-point play, and then a triple from beyond the arc within 20 seconds of each other, which allowed Stetson to cruise to the buzzer. I m proud of Chris, Alexander said. It was great to see him come through at a time when we really needed somebody to come through. You can always count on Chris playing hard. Chris wants to be good, and he s a guy you can depend on, so I m glad to see that he carried us. A game that was physical, and a bit out of control at times, featured a number of hard fouls and a couple of moments of retaliation. One of those came at the 11:32 mark in the second half when Pegg retaliated on a hard foul on one end of the floor with one of his own, which was called flagrant. Pegg was forced to leave the game, finishing the night with 14 points, four rebounds, and two blocks. It marked the first back-to-back wins for Stetson since victories over Jacksonville and North Florida in January of last season. Moreover, Monday night s win gave the Hatters back-to-back 20+ point triumphs for the first time since November of the 2000-01 season.

Senior Joel Naburgs led the Hatters with 18 points on four three-pointers in the defeat. With such small margin for error, like we had in this game, you have to win the free throw battle, you have to shoot a high percentage, and you have to have guys really rise up when their time is called, Stetson head coach Casey Alexander said after the game. Not to discredit anybody - our effort was great - it just wasn t our night to finish it off. Not only was the effort there for the Hatters, but the quality of play was as well, as the team went toe-to-toe with the Bulls until the final few minutes of the game. Stetson tied the game for the fifth and final time of the night when a pair of free throws from junior Aaron Graham made it 49-49 with 3:50 left to play. Unfortunately, USF quickly went on an 8-0 run to put the Hatters out of reach and leave DeLand with the 63-54 win. I felt like our guys played hard enough to win the game, Alexander said. I m really proud of their effort. I think they thought they could win the game, they played like they were going to win the game, but we just simply weren t good enough down the stretch. I don t think it s anything they did, or we didn t do. We had some great looks, they just didn t fall in. A team that used defense to advance all the way to the Third Round of last year s NCAA Tournament, the Bulls tough and physical style of play forced another slow start for the Hatters on Monday. Stetson, which was averaging 82.7 points per game coming into the night, only had three points at the first media timeout. Fortunately for SU, its opponents had been shut out at the first break for the second straight contest, as Stetson led USF 3-0 through 4:19. As the two teams got comfortable, it was South Florida that took the early advantage, using a 9-2 run to take an 18-12 lead and force a Stetson timeout with 8:01 to play in the first half. The Hatters stopped the bleeding with a layup by junior Chris Perez, and then went on a 7-1 run to tie the game back up at 21-21 when a long two-pointer by Graham was good at the 4:35 mark. After a Naburgs triple cut the USF lead to one point at the break, the senior guard scored seven out of the Hatters first nine points of the second half to give Stetson a 36-34 lead with 15:45 to play. Unfortunately for SU, the Bulls soon went on a 7-0 run, which included five points from Jawanza Poland, and USF held a 47-39 lead midway through the second half. The late eight straight points by the Hatters tied the game one final time, but it wasn t enough to escape with the victory. I m sure that was part of it, Alexander said about USF physicality playing a part in the loss. They hang their hat on defense, and regardless of what our offense was, or who we had playing, it was going to be tougher to come by tonight. 54 is a really low number for our team. You throw [fatigue] on top of playing a really physical team, and it wore us down a bit. Naburgs led Stetson with 18 points on 4-of-7 from beyond the arc. His quartet of triples gave the senior 135 in his career, one shy of the sixth spot in the Stetson record books. Graham added 15 points and a team high seven rebounds. Junior Willie Green chipped in with 11 points, six boards, two assists, and two blocks in the defeat.
