2018 Christmas Party at Hillcrest Thank You to Everyone that came out!
FORE! Hillcrest CC Golf News Red Tee Report: Happy New Year!!!!!! 2019 is going to be a great year for the ladies at Hillcrest Golf and Country Club! We welcome all new members to join Hillcrest Women s Association and play bridge/golf with us. Or, just for the fellowship! HWA is a group of wonderful, caring women. The bridge group meets on Wednesdays. Ladies Day Golf is on Tuesday. Please join us!!! Unfortunately, the Christmas luncheon was cancelled due to the snow storm. Hope everyone had a great holiday with family and friends. We will have our membership luncheon in February. The date is TBA so look for emails and texts from Rhonda Pruitt when it is confirmed. Our next meeting is January 8, 2019 at 9:30am with golf to follow, weather permitting. On a sad note, please keep precious Mary Mojica in your thoughts and prayers. We miss her as we look forward to her recovery and return to HCC. The staff at Hillcrest has been working diligently to improve the Crest experience. The Christmas party was a huge success; the Pro Shop gave us great opportunities to shop for gifts; and on the course, trees have been trimmed/cut down, brush has been cleared, and the rye grass looks super. Come on out and enjoy! Be safe and see you at the Crest! Happy New Year, Rhonda Headley s Hints: by Pro Adam Headley Each month I will provide some helpful tips on how to approach each hole for maximum scoring. Happy Golf! HOLE #6 How to Play Hole #6 #6 is a tough long iron hole but we at least normally get some wind help. The real difficult part of #6 is the layup. If you are using a range finder or gps device, if you can figure out the yardage to the last fairway bunker. The best layup is to stay short of that last trap and short of the trees on the right. It s a very tough green to hit from the trees or fairway bunkers. The best miss is left. If your left of the green the up and down is a little easier than anywhere else. Good Golfing! Hillcrest Women s Association Meeting January 8 th at 9:30am with Golf to Follow (weather permitting).
From the Grounds up! Dear Members, I am happy to announce two important projects are approved and scheduled. 1) The Practice area. The old putting green will be turned into a practice area. There will be multiple heights of cut on flat, uphill and downhill areas to allow for practicing all shots. The old green will be seeded and ready for play by June 1 st. The green will be approximately 4,500 square feet. About the size of an average green on the course. Work will begin on moving the irrigation and getting the slopes right soon. In conjunction with this project we are also adding irrigation to the areas in front of the clubhouse that are lacking. The two beds at the front entrance now have irrigation and the bed by the bag drop will be done soon. I think our curb appeal will be much higher in 2019 with the practice area and the landscape irrigation allowing for plants. 2) Root Pruning around the greens! We have secured an outside vendor to come in late February with a specific tractor, pto driven implement, to prune the roots around the greens. The tree roots are pervasive on 2, 3, 5, 11 and 16. These roots suck moisture and take nutrients from the greens and cause problem spots. Pruning the roots won t be a cure all, but it will help dramatically in the summer months. These are just 2 of the many projects that show the resolve the owners have to make sure 2019 is the best year ever for the course. I am excited to be a part of all the fun things going on at Hillcrest! Happy New Year to All! Daren Hazel Hillcrest Course Superintendent

The Must Know Rules of Golf Changes for 2019 (with local rules) 1. Drop From Knee Height (Not Shoulder Height) 2. Measure the area to drop in with the longest club in your bag (except a putter) 3. Time to search 3 Minutes (NOT 5 minutes) 4. If you accidentally move your ball when searching for it, replace without penalty 5. No penalty for a double hit, It only counts as one stroke 6. No penalty if your ball hits you or your equipment accidentally after a stroke. 7. No penalty if your ball strikes the flagstick when you have chosen to leave it in the hole. 8. Spike mark and other shoe damage on the green can be repaired 9. Ball marked, lifted and replaced on putting green is moved by wind to another position replace ball on original spot. 10. Penalty areas replace water hazards, and you can move loose impediments, ground your club and take practice swings in penalty areas without penalty, just as you can on the fairway and in the rough. 11. In bunkers you can move loose impediments 12. In bunkers you cannot touch the sand with your club in the area right in front of or right behind your ball, during your backswing or in taking practice swings. 13. Free relief is allowed if your ball is embedded on the fairway or in the rough. 14. There is no longer the option to take a drop on the opposite side of a penalty area at an equal distance 15. Unplayable ball in bunker extra option to drop outside the bunker for a 2 stroke penalty 16. You cannot have your caddie or your partner standing behind you once you begin taking your stance. 17. Pace of Play- It is recommended that you take no longer than 40 seconds to make a stroke (and usually you should be able to play more quickly than that) and Ready Golf in stroke play is encouraged. Hillcrest Local Rules 1. If your ball hits a high line wire or part of the boxes that connect high line wires you MUST make another stroke with no penalty. 2. All railroad ties (part of tee box on #2, steps on #3, etc..) are considered an integral part of the golf course and relief is not granted. 3. If you lose your ball or hit your ball out of bounds you may take a drop for a 2 stoke penalty at the nearest point in the fairway no closer to the hole from where you believe your ball to have been. (please see diagram in pro shop for further guidance on this dropping procedure) 4. On #10 if your ball is lost or out of bounds off the tee and you choose not to play the stroke and distance for that shot you must proceed to the marked drop area and play from there with a 2 shot penalty. *Local Rules 3-4 are meant to help with pace of play. Local rules 3 and 4 will not be implemented for club competitive tournaments. l;

Kathy s Tennis Report Hi Tennis Players, We are in the off season so to speak in that there are not a lot of leagues and tournaments going on in the winter. This is the best time to work on a part of your game that is difficult. Many players have trouble with the overhead. Though it is similar to the serve, the main difference is that rather than tossing it, one has to deal with the oncoming lob and that can vary tremendously in height, depth and spin. It is a shot that one must practice often to get good at timing it. A great practice drill is to have someone feed you lobs. In the beginning prepare as if you are going to hit but catch the ball instead. This way you can check your positioning and balance. The most important thing is to be behind the ball and thus your contact point will be slightly in front. It is also important to time the ball so that your hitting arm is extended at contact. After catching many balls, have your friend or pro, continue to hit lobs and practice hitting the overhead. It is difficult shot, thus requires much practice. Also, if you have any interest in joining the USTA league team for the Spring Season, let us know and we will help you find a team to join. See you on the Courts, Kathy
