Students will spend classroom time reading, discussing, learning about, and experiencing through various mediums the business aspects of football
in the U.K. The relationship between the U.K. football environment and the historical, cultural, social, religious, and economic relevance to the UK will also be examined. Specific football clubs and their importance to their region, neighborhoods, and cities (London, Nottingham, Manchester, Blackburn) will be used for this purpose. Students will travel to the England during Spring Break 2015 for an intensive look at business aspects of football. The students prepare for their trip to England with readings, videos, and guest speakers. While in England during Spring Break, students will visit football clubs they have studied through readings and classroom discussions. They will meet with various club officials to learn about the business aspects of football in the U.K. Students will also have the opportunity to attend several football matches. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: This course will expose UMW students to global business perspectives by offering them an opportunity to study abroad. The purposes of the course are: o To understand of how functional areas of business (e.g., marketing, accounting, finance, and management) operate in the U.K. football environment. o To understand the impact of football in the U.K. on the economic, historical, and cultural aspects of the U.K. o To understand the relevance of statistical and data analysis on U.K. football. o To teach students to appreciate the importance of global business. o To develop students' ability to be more flexible and open to change. PREREQUISITES: Per the course catalog, the prerequisites for BUAD 471 are Business Administration major, permission of the instructor, and permission of the Associate Dean for Faculty (Ken Machande during the Spring 2015 semester). INSTRUCTION METHODOLOGY: Instruction methodology may include lectures, participative class discussions, guest lectures, and Internet research activities. Note however, that this course is structured primarily with a discussion format in mind; that is, students will be expected to prepare readings and assignments BEFORE attending class so that such assignments may be used as a basis for interactive discussion. When crossing the street in the UK look RIGHT first then look LEFT sounds simple, but don t forget, they drive on the left side of the street thankfully, most cross walks are painted with LOOK RIGHT to help you remember!!! If you plan to use a debit or credit card while traveling you MUST clear it with the company as they will disallow any charges outside of the USA without preauthorization. Please bring a copy of your passport with you. Hotels will have twin beds, extra blankets and pillows, hair dryers, and soaps. All hotels have wireless access and will require a voltage converter for your plugins. Your mobile phone WILL NOT work in the UK unless you have an international plan. Make sure you review the TSA guidelines on what can be brought on-board. NO ONE is to walk alone in the evenings. Make sure you are all looking out for each other. Listen to each other and respect each other. Enjoy the experience! Talk to people! Ask questions! Soak in the atmosphere at the soccer matches, the train stations, the university campuses, and the urban environments of London, Nottingham, Blackburn, and Manchester! REMEMBER TO BRING: Make sure you have your PASSPORT!!! Make sure you bring your journal with you. There will be daily reflection questions as part of our program assessment.
