2018 4-H Dairy Year End Report Sherry Smith, 4-H Dairy Specialist, The Ohio State University 4-H Achievement Awards 34 4-H Dairy Youth received the Dairy Achievement Awards in 2018. The Gold Achievement winners for 2018 were: Lauren Almasy, Keith Barto, Lydia Kaverman, Sarah Lehner, Logan Schlauch, Wyatt Schlauch, Rachel Sherman, Colby Turon. Congrats to all the recipients. 4-H Dairy Judging Clinic The dairy judging clinic was held Saturday, March 17 th, at the Animal Science Building in Columbus. 40 4-Hers judged 2 jersey cow classes and had the opportunity to try their hand at oral reasons. We also had the roll out of our Ohio 4-H Dairy Reasons video featuring 4-H Alumni, Billy Smith. This clinic is great practice for the state contest held in April. 4-H Dairy Judging State Contest Columbus, Ohio The 2018 Ohio 4-H Dairy Judging Contest took place during the Spring Dairy expo on Thursday, March 29th in the Voinovich arena. This was the first year for the contest to be held on Thursday and attendance was up. 56 seniors, 37 Intermediates, 39 Juniors and 58 Open contestants participated for a total of 189 youth from the state of Ohio and surrounding states, placed six classes of cattle and gave 2 and 3 sets of oral reasons. Wyatt Schlauch from Holmes county won the Junior division, followed by Allison Francis from Darke county. The intermediate division winner was Luke Jackson from Logan County with second place going to Paige Smith from Stark. Taking top honors in the Senior Division was Sidney Daniels from Stark county with Marissa Topp from Auglaize close behind. Topping the open competition was Morgan Stone from Hancock County, Indiana. Thanks to all those who volunteer their talents to make this competition run smoothly and congratulations to the winners listed below. State Dairy Judging Team Madison /Harrisburg Team Highlights- Team members representing the Buckeye State this year at the All American contest were Sarah Quallen from Clinton County, Sarah Rhoades, Darke County, David Miley, Wayne County and Gracie McCarron, Clinton County. Sarah Quallen led the team placing 2 nd in Holsteins and 10 th overall, followed by Sarah Rhoades, 13 th and David Miley 15 th. The team finished 4 th overall and was high team in Holsteins, 2 nd in Jerseys and 5 th in Ayrshires. Thank you to Rachel Topp for her valuable assistance with this group. The Madison team members were Sarah Quallen, Sarah Rhoades, David Miley and Samuel Jackson. The team finish 7 th overall in placings and 10 th overall at the World Dairy Expo contest in Madison, Wisconsin, out of 23 teams. Sarah Quallen finished 14 th capturing the Gold rating. David Miley finished 7 th overall in placings and ninth in Jerseys. Sam Jackson was 7 th in Brown Swiss. The team was also 7 th in Guernseys. Many thanks goes to Ella King for her coaching help on this trip. Louisville Team Highlights- Louisville team members were: Derek Burns, Fairfield County, Lindsay L Amoreaux, Stark, John Hughes, Holmes and Clayton Lamb, Lorain. Some individual highlights from the NAILE contest were: Lindsay L Amoreaux finished 20 th overall and 25 th in reasons and Derek Burns finished 13 th in reasons. John Hughes was 9 th in Ayrshires. The team finished 8 th overall and 9 th in reasons out of 21 teams. Solid finish and good first-outing for all.

Ohio State Fair Clinic In week one of the judging clinic, there were 44 Juniors and 25 Seniors that placed 3 classes of cattle. Lydia Kaverman Quiz Bowl 10 teams participated in this year s Dairy Quiz Bowl held at the 4-H Center on June 13 th. Winning the Junior team competition was the Champaign/Logan county team of Kody Pond, Sami King, Silas King and Kaleb Pond, coached by Mark and Lorraine Townsley. Wayne County took 2 nd with team members, Laney Hunsberger, Olivia Daley, Adam Wolf and Megan Martin, coached by Lisa Gress. High test score was Adam Wolf and most valuable player honors to Kody Pond. Delaware County took the top prize in the Senior Division with a team of Sarah Lehner, Rachel Sherman and Heather Cade, coached by Rose Sherman. Second in the Senior divison was the Champaing/Logan with Gloria Terry, Sam Jackson and Cole Pond, coached by Mark and Lorraine Townsley. High test score and most valuable player was Sarah Lehner. National Quiz Bowl North American Livestock Expo in Louisville, KY Ohio was represented by Sarah Lehner, David Miley, Sara Wolf, Denice Wolf, Thomas Gress and JD Nelson. The team finished 7 th. It is always a challenge to juggle this contest with the Junior show competitions going on at the same time. Big shout out to Lisa Gress for coaching this team! Skillathon at the Ohio State Fair Two sessions of Dairy Skillathon were held during the State Fair. 80 youth competed in week one, completing four stations covering different dairy-related topics. 166 kids completed four stations covering different dairyrelated topics.
