The National Day is a positive day of action, bringing school communities together to help find workable solutions that address bullying and violence. https://bullyingnoway.gov.au/nationalday Strathfield Girls High School Amity Club, which is a student-led network to promote kindness at our school, works very hard through the year to spread kindness to overcome the impact of negative comments and covert bullying that may occur. The initiatives of the Amity Club foster a sense of belonging, model positive relationships and remind students of all the school s anti-bullying programs highlighted through Vitae Lampada classes, wellbeing programs, as well as the School s Discipline Policy. On Friday, our school came alive with Amity Club activities promoting respect and kindness to one another. Strathfield Girls High School has a ZERO TOLERANCE for bullying behaviour and said, Bullying. NO WAY! loudly and clearly!! It s difficult to dictate values like kindness and mindfulness from the top-down, so peer-topeer initiatives like this are invaluable in empowering our young women to consider kindness as an important value and soft skill to ensure success in whatever field they may choose. I thank parents and caregivers for their unstinting support in working with the school to ensure that every student has a voice and feels known, safe and cared for. Let's Take a Stand Together. Ms Lyris

MATHEMATICS COMPETITIONS This year, as in previous years, the Mathematics Faculty are giving students the opportunity to enter two external competitions. The Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC), organised by the Australian Mathematics Trust in Canberra, has been growing in prestige and popularity since it began in 1976. The ICAS Mathematics Competition, conducted by the University of New South Wales, is a problem-solving competition with a similar format to the AMC. Both competitions require students to solve a range of mathematical problems, ranging in difficulty from straightforward to challenging. The entry fee for the AMC includes access to an online preparation course which provides students with practice questions. Practice questions for the ICAS competition are not included in the entry fee, but are available for purchase on the ICAS website. All entrants receive a certificate of participation. Those who perform with merit may be awarded a Credit or Distinction certificate. Last year, we were thrilled to have a Prize winner - Yilin Chen of Year 9. Australian Mathematics Competition Date: Thursday, 9th August, 2018 Duration: 1 hour 15 minutes Cost: $8.50 Online Preparation Course: included in entry fee Calculators: Not permitted ICAS Mathematics Competition Date: Tuesday, 14th August, 2018 Duration: 1 hour Cost: $9.00 Practice Papers: Available for purchase on the ICAS website Calculators: Allowed for Years 8-12 but not permitted for Year 7 The closing date for payment of the entry fee is the last day of Term 1. All girls who like problem-solving and enjoy a challenge are encouraged to enter. Ms O Neile
