The rally started with twotime world champions Tommi Mäkinen (Mitsubishi/Michelin) and Carlos Sainz (Toyota/Michelin) split by just two points in the Drivers title chase. When the Finn clouted a concrete block and ripped off the rearright suspension of his Mitsubishi Lancer on Day 1 s Silverstone spectator stage, all Sainz had to do to top the 199 standings was finish inside the top four. At the start of the season s final stage (Margam, 27.9km), the Spaniard was effectively sitting fourth overall. Just 3 metres from the finish line, however, his Toyota Corolla was sidelined by engine failure. Mäkinen learnt that he was the 199 world champion when someone phoned him with the news back at his hotel!
