I hope everyone had a Happy Thanksgiving. As this is my last Commodore s Corner I would like to thank the membership for the trust that they had in electing me as Commodore. It has been an interesting and rewarding experience. I would like to wish the new board and incoming Commodore, Gerald Kuehler, all the best in the upcoming year! Check www.corinthians.org for the members of the board for 2016. I would also like to express my gratitude to the outgoing board for all their help and hard work - it has been an honor and pleasure serving with you. The next event for CSA will be the birthday party on Saturday, January 23, 2016 starting at 6PM at NOYC. Chef Katherine will be cooking and the Shriners entertaining us as before. The ticket price will be $25 per person until January 10. Afterward the price per ticket will be $30 per person. 8 Page 8 Corinthian Sailing Association JibSheet December 2015 More CSA History In early 1983, The Corinthian Sailing Association received a letter from the Commodore of the Gulf Yachting Association inviting the CSA to join. We filled out the necessary information and sent it to them. Our membership was to be taken up at the GYA meeting in September of 1983. I was told that a very heated discussion about our membership between the GYA Commodore and the Commodore of the New Orleans Yacht Club took place before the meeting. We did not hear about our application for about two months, so we called the Secretary of the GYA. We were told that the requirements for membership had changed and that a club had to have an approved building. Of course, there was no indication as to what the requirements for an approved building included.. The next thing that happened was that the CSA was not recognized by the other clubs, so we were not able to participate in their races. Finally, Tammany Yacht Club decided to allow the CSA members into their Single Handed and Double Handed Round the Lake races. After that, one by one, the clubs allowed us to race; but, without a formal acknowledgement. To this day, we have more boats and more races than the majority of clubs in the GYA, plus, we have two very active fleets. We were told by a number of people that the CSA would not last six months. Yet here we are, thirty two years later and still going strong. Back in 2004, I suggested to the board that we start a fleet on the Northshore. I was given the go ahead to see if it was possible. We had a few people interested and on September 25, 2004 had our first race with three boats. On August 13 of the following year, Gerald Kuehler raced his Tartan 33 and won the race over the other five boats. Gerald was the first non-csa skipper to race with us. He became a member shortly afterward. Now, after 11 years, the Northshore Fleet is still going strong. Charley Erickson Note: Charley singlehandedly recruited the North Shore fleet by going from boat to boat and speaking personally with individual skippers. Ed.
