1) WELCOME FROM THE HEADMASTER DAY ZERO I attended a Principal s meeting with Premier Helen Zille and we have had our first FHS Day Zero Committee meeting. We are busy fine-tuning the steps to be taken in our Management Plan for the water crisis. A report / action plan will be sent out on Monday. JUNIOR ACADEMIC DINNER The Junior Academic Dinner was held on Thursday, 1 February. The evening was hosted by Ms Meyer and her team of handy helpers. The Gr 8, 9 and 10 learners who were invited were commended for their excellent performance based on the June and November 2017 results. Special mention was made of the following learners who were the top performers in their respective grades: Grade 8: Jack Brand 92 % average Grade 9: Amy Hine 91 % average Grade 10: Nashetah Makadam 89,5 % The learners were encouraged to continue their pursuit of academic excellence and to distinguish themselves by realising their dreams and desires which can only be accomplished by consistent application and sheer determination. 2) MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SPORT Our wish for you, our new and existing parents, is that you will support and motivate your son or daughter to get involved in sport activities offered by the school. You are reminded that we expect all our players to be correctly dressed for matches; and the correct dress code will be given to your son or daughter by their manager and coach. Our Sport Administrators, Mr Dino de Pentieiros and Mr Jody Erasmus, and your son or daughter s coach / manager need to be informed of any problems, queries or absenteeism of your child, especially if they are supposed to play a match. The first 5 weeks of school is a hype of activity to prepare our athletes and the rest of the school for competing on the field and track, as well as in cheering our athletes on. The Inter-Schools Athletics Meeting on Friday, 16 February, will take place at the Green Point Stadium. It is very important that your son / daughter commit themselves to the sport that they sign-up for and we expect them to honour that commitment for the full season. Help us strive for excellence - live for memories!!! 3) GUIDELINE TO TEACHING TIME FOR MATRICS : 129 DAYS School Public Holidays Holidays January (0 School Days) February (18 School Days) March (22 School Days) MR P.R. With only 2 weeks to go to the Interschools athletics, I am pleased to inform you that our athletes and cheerleaders have been working extremely hard in preparation for this event. Interschools athletics is compulsory and all learners are expected to attend the day. This year the event will take place in Cape Town, at the Green Point Athletics Stadium. Transport will be provided to and from the venue at no cost to our learners (24 buses have been ordered). We will be leaving Fairmont at 9.30am and will return directly after the Prize-giving ceremony which starts at 6.20pm. NO learner will be allowed to travel with their parents / family / friends to and from the event so please do not ask for permission. Once we receive the final program and instructions from our host school, Durbanville High School, we will communicate these with you. Once again I d like to thank you for your continued support in making Fairmont a school of excellence. Francois Jansen van Rensburg Deputy Principal Discipline, Sport and Culture 6) SMT TEAM-BUILDING SESSION The Fairmont Senior Management Team participated in a teambuilding session on Saturday, 27 January. The session started at ARTJAMMING situated in the V&A Waterfront and ended with lunch. During the first session every member received a canvass on which he/she had to complete just a section of an image. At the end of the session the images were put together and the final product revealed a work of art that portrays this year s theme: FAIRMONT ON FIRE. Sceptical and dubious minds were soon surprised by their own talents and the realisation that many hands can, after all, make beautiful work.

Mr and Miss FHS is a program that aims to bring awareness to important causes in and around our community, it teaches the candidates about ambassadorship, marketing and showmanship skills, and raising funds for the Student Fund of the school. Without the dedication and passion of the candidates, we would not be able to obtain any sponsorship. Without the generosity of our wonderful sponsors, we would not be able to make any profit from the show. All the profits made with Mr & Ms FHS will be going to The Student Fund and the winning candidate's charity of choice. The Student Fund assists learners who struggle to afford their stationery requirements, textbooks, sport equipment and sport outings, excursions etc. Mr and Miss FHS s Urban Jungle will be taking place on 2 March 2018 at 7pm. Tickets can be bought from the Finance office for R85, and will be on sale from Monday, 5 February 2018. Please support our Ambassadors by coming to enjoy the show. It will be an absolutely phenomenal evening of entertainment, style and glamour. All audience members will be entered into the lucky draw and could stand a chance to win many fantastic prizes! We would greatly appreciate it If you would like to become a Sponsor of Mr & Miss FHS. Your business will be featured on all our social media platforms when advertising the show. Please contact Miss Minette Moolman (mmoolman@fairmont.co.za) for any further inquiries. 11) FAIRMONT HIGH SCHOOL CRICKET We had a fabulous start to the 2018 season!!! All the Fairmont teams won their matches against Brackenfell on Saturday, 27 January. The U15B unfortunately lost to Curro Century City on Monday, 27 January, but it was a close game and our Fairmont cricketers fought to the end. The U14B won their match against The Settlers on Wednesday, 31 January in a nail biting finish. There were some exceptional performances with the bat and ball. Andrew Reeve in the U19A team made 127 runs and took3 wickets, while Keenan Opperman made 54 runs and took 5 wickets for 7 runs off 3 overs. In the U19B team, Nicholas Hoctor made 55 runs and took 5 wickets for 14 runs off 7 overs, including 3 maiden overs. David Passman in the U14A team took 5 wickets for 22 runs off 6 overs. Unfortunately, this excellent start has been cut short by the WPCA s announcement on Wednesday morning that all club and school cricket matches have been suspended as a result of the drought currently gripping the Western Cape. FHS Cricket will give feedback to parents and learners on the way forward as soon as we ve explored our options. U19A Team Andrew Reeve U15A Team U14B Team U15B Team
