Buffs Roll on to Sections Last Thursday was the opening round of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV playoffs, in which the Buffs played Dixon Rams (6-5) of the Golden Empire League. After a rough start, the Buffs defense settled down to allow just 13 points. It received exceptional contributions from Ferrin Manuleleua, Matthew Ender, and Vincent Ferro. Quarterback Gino Campiotti exploited holes in the Ram s defense, throwing for 4 touchdowns and rushing for another. When the dust settled it was an impressive 42-13 victory for the Buffaloes. Come out to support our Buffs this Friday, the 18 th, for their playoff home game against Los Banos (8-3). The game starts at 7 PM, and will be played at Guss Schmiedt Field. By: Joseph Santos 2

MHS Girls Basketball 2016-2017 Malia Parangan The conversation with the new head Coach of our Varsity Girls Basketball Program, Coach Ryan Bono, gave Manteca High a little bit of insight on what to expect from girls basketball this year. I: What are going to be the biggest challenges for you this year? CB: The biggest challenge implementing new systems, gaining players trust, and adjusting to a woman s game. We have to treat every game as a championship game, anyone can lose to anyone at any time. I: How do you plan to overcome any obstacles? CB: Ladies have to come to practice every day with a mindset to get better and learn every day. I: What are you excited about? CB: The opportunity to teach and coach a wonderful set of ladies who have earned the right to wear the Buffs uniform I: How are you preparing? CB: Every day at practice our team is building trust with each other and learning to play together, for each other. I: What are your goals for this upcoming season? CB: The goal is to become the best team we can be. We have a long way to go but a short time to get there. By working hard every day and continually building the trust great teams have for each other, and accomplish that every day at practice, we will be nothing but a successful team. No matter the record.

Veterans Day By: Katrina Garcia November 11, 1918: the day World War I ended, a day we shall never forget. It is 2016 and this year, Veterans Day takes place on a Friday. Instead of just thinking of it as another day off of school or work, we should really take the time to understand the profoundness of this day. It all started on June 28, 1914 in Sarajevo, Bosnia when Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife, Sophie, Duchess of Hohenberg, were assassinated by the Serbian nationalist Gavrilo Princip. A month later, on July 28, 1914, Austria- Hungary declared war on Serbia. It was Germany, Austria, Bulgaria, and the Ottoman Empire against Great Britain, France, Russia, Japan, and Italy: the Central Powers vs the Allied Powers. From all of the fighting, millions of lives were lost and millions were wounded. After 4 years and 3 and a half months, The Armistice was finally signed and the hostilities of the Great War came to a close on November 11, 1918. It was first commemorated the following year, known as Armistice Day, although it did not become a legal federal holiday until 1938 in the US. Due to the great service of the veterans of World War II and the Korean War, the 83 rd US Congress altered the 1938 act the one which had made Armistice Day an official holiday and had changed the name from Armistice to Veterans. The legislation was approved by President Dwight D. Eisenhower on June 1, 1954. Ever since then, apart from other slight changes on the date, November 11 has been a day honoring American veterans of all wars. Veterans Day is commemorated worldwide. The Two-Minute Pause is a tradition that was originated in Cape Town, South Africa and soon after, the rest of the world had picked up on it. On the eleventh hour of the eleventh month, two minutes of silence are observed. During the first minute, thanks is given for those who have survived, and the second minute is for remembrance of those who have died. The Two-Minute Pause is such a simple gesture with great significance. As parades and other celebrations take place around America, another tradition, the annual Wreath-Laying Ceremony, is held at Tomb of the Unknowns at the Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia. The Tomb of the Unknowns is a monument in dedication to American service members who have died although their remains have not been identified. During the ceremony, the president lays a wreath at the tomb, paying tribute to the beloved veterans. This year, after the laying of the wreath and while giving his speech, Obama stated, as we search for ways to come together, to reconnect with one another and with the principles that are more enduring than transitory politics, some of our best examples are the men and women we salute on Veterans Day. Veterans Day is a day honoring all veterans, living or dead, and we should not take it for granted. We shall have compassion and pay great respect to all those who have served. We shall thank them for their sacrifice for our nation. We shall recognize their humble bravery, their selflessness, and their heroism. We shall do as Obama says: Whenever the world makes you cynical, whenever you doubt that courage and goodness and selflessness is possible, stop and look to a veteran. Veterans: people whom we shall always respect and never forget.

Dia de Los Muertos By Jeanette Ramirez Medina Day of the Dead is a holiday celebrated in central and southern Mexico during the chilly days of November 1 & 2. Mexicans believe that the gates of heaven are opened at midnight on October 31, and the spirits of all deceased children are allowed to reunite with their families for 24 hours. On November 2, the spirits of the adults come down to enjoy the festivities that are prepared for them. It is a huge celebration full of bright colors, food, and music take place at the cemeteries and elaborate ofrenda altars are built in the homes to honor specific family members who have passed on. The MECHA club at Manteca High hosted an event for Day of The Dead for our community on Nov. 5 th. They had performance by the Musicians of French Camp, and Ballet Folclorico De Las Rosas. MECHA also had small skits in between each performance. Skits that involved remembering the lost of huge stars in the Hispanic music scene like, Juan Gabriel, Jenni Rivera, and Selena. Also, having a skit poking jokes at the wall our elected president has commented on. MECHA also sold delicious food during the intermission and played amazing music to kill the time. The members also had a dance performance the put together for this event. MECHA did an amazing job at hosting this event, celebrating a tradition that means so much to the culture, really making the event felt like home away from home for many. 6

Trash on Campus By: Lily Spicer For the past couple of weeks, during our brunch and lunch I've started to notice more and more trash on the campus grounds. The students that try to throw their trash in the trashcan and miss, some students even leave their trash on the tables or drop them on the ground. For our janitors, it must be very stressful to go around campus everyday after school and pick up trash that s left on the ground. Recently I went to one of our home games, all the people who attend can buy food and drinks at the snack bars. After the game, I noticed how full the stands where of trash. The next day I find them to be completely cleaned. Even during rally days I see multiple water bottles left on the ground. Why do students leave all this trash on the ground for others to pick it up? Well maybe that s just it, some students just don t care what happens to the trash, because they know someone else can pick it up. Students have just become very lazy and don t feel the need to throw trash away. As students of Manteca High, we should try to respect the campus by keeping it clean and throwing our trash away. By doing this, our campus will stay clean, and will help keep our campus looking beautiful. JOURNALISM CLASS OF 2016-2017 7
