In 13 years at the the helm of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women s basketball team, Sandy Botham continues to guide the team to the top of the Horizon League and onto the cusp of postseason competition. Botham has consistently kept UWM in the thick of the league title chase, including secondplace-or-better finishes eight times since 1999. The Horizon League s all-time leader in league wins (136), Botham led the Panthers to the league championship game last season. Her squad became the first team in league history to play in the tournament first round and advance to the championship game. To do so, UWM had to win three games in five days in three different states. She also surpassed 200 coaching wins at Milwaukee, just the latest of a number of milestones she has reached in recent years. In 2007-08, in addition to surpassing 200 wins in her career, she also broke the league record for league coaching wins. In Botham s 13 years at UWM, she has compiled a 212-167 mark, including a 136-68 mark in Horizon League contests. Not only has Botham led UWM to enormous team success, but she has also aided in individual player development. During the Botham era, 30 players have been selected to the all-league and league all-newcomer teams. She has coached two of the top players in league history in the recently-graduated Traci Edwards and Maria Viall. The top two scorers in school history, both players were two-time league players of the year. Edwards graduated as the all-time leading scorer in UWM, state of Wisconsin and Horizon League history. She was the first woman in school, state or league history with 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in her career. Both Edwards and Viall also carved out professional careers for themselves overseas, where Edwards is playing with the Caboolture Suns of the Queensland Basketball League. 2009-10 Milwaukee Women s Basketball Summer Prospectus 5 Sandy Botham Head Coach 14th Season at Milwaukee In 2006, Milwaukee advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the second time in school history after winning the Horizon League Tournament at the Klotsche Center. The homecourt advantage was made possible by UWM s second regular season championship and its first-ever No. 1 seed. All told, UWM won a school-record 22 games that season, including a school-record 12- straight through the league tournament and 17-of-19 after the calendar turned to 2006. In league play, Milwaukee tied its best ever mark of 14-2 for its share of the league crown. When the dust settled, Botham collected a third Horizon League Coach of the Year honor and her players garnered six postseason league honors themselves, including newcomer of the year. Two Milwaukee players also received all-league first team awards for the first time in school history. Botham led the Panthers to their first-ever league crown and NCAA Tournament berth in 2001 and to their first 20-win campaign the following season. Her teams have gone 105-41 in the league since 1999-00. The building process started right away for Botham, who took over a team that won just four games the year before. She led the squad to 16 wins in 1996-97, earning conference coach of the year honors in the process. Year-By-Year Record 1995-96 Beloit 22-4.846 1996-97 Milwaukee 16-12.571 1997-98 Milwaukee 15-12.556 1998-99 Milwaukee 11-16.444 1999-00 Milwaukee 16-12.571 2000-01 Milwaukee 19-11.633 2001-02 Milwaukee 20-8.714 2002-03 Milwaukee 15-13.536 2003-04 Milwaukee 17-12.586 2004-05 Milwaukee 14-14.500 2005-06 Milwaukee 22-9.710 2006-07 Milwaukee 15-16.484 2007-08 Milwaukee 17-14.548 2007-08 Milwaukee 15-18.455 At UWM 13 Years 212-167.559 Overall 14 Years 234-171.578 That season started a trend for UWM under Botham s direction. The next year, the Panthers posted an eight-game winning streak and claimed a win over No. 13 Nebraska. The 1999-00 season then included a second-place finish and an undefeated league home campaign. Botham came to UWM in 1996 following a successful season as head coach at Beloit College in Beloit, Wis. Her team went 22-4 in 1995-96, making it the most successful team in school history. That Beloit squad advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament before losing to eventual national champion UW-Oshkosh. Before becoming a head coach at the collegiate level, Botham spent five seasons as an assistant at the University of Notre Dame under head coach Muffet McGraw. During her time in South Bend from 1991-95, the Irish won the league regular-season title twice, the league tournament twice and twice went to the NCAA Tournament. Prior to her assistantship at her alma mater, Botham spent a year in Milwaukee, assisting Marquette University head coach Jim Jabir in 1990-91. As a player, Botham played at Notre Dame from 1984-88. A four-time all-league performer, she ranks among the top-10 in career scoring (1,460), rebounding (773) and field goal percentage (.588). A native of Madison, Wis., Botham attended Madison West High School from 1980-84 where she was a standout in three different sports. In addition to basketball, Botham starred in volleyball and softball at West High. As a sophomore, Botham helped lead Madison West to the state basketball championship. Botham was inducted into the Madison Athletics Hall of Fame in 2007. Botham earned her bachelor s degree from Notre Dame in 1988 while majoring in psychology with a minor in business. Botham remained in South Bend for her graduate work, earning a Masters of Science in Administration from the school in 1990.

6 2009-10 Milwaukee Women s Basketball Summer Prospectus Back In Black & Gold 2009-10 Women s Basketball Notebook UWM returns eight letterwinners from last season, including five upperclassmen. While last season featured a school-record five-member senior class, the 2009-10 Panthers will boast just one senior in Jodie McClain. Also back in uniform will be juniors Lindsay Laur, Ashley Imperiale, Jenilee Klomstad and Stephanie Schell. Laur was a strong candidate for Horizon League Sixth Player of the Year last season and was the team s second leading scorer (9.6 ppg) and rebounder (6.0). Imperiale came on strong and was a league all-newcomer and all-tournament team selection. But What That Means... Despite losing five seniors, including three starters, the Panthers are not without strong experience. In fact, the eight returners accounted for 43 percent of the team s scoring last season and 39 percent of its rebounding. The group also accounted for 66 starts and boasts 94 career starts. the league standings in eight of the last 10 seasons and are 105-41 in league games since 1999-2000. UWM has won league titles in 2001 and 2006. Home Sweet Home The Klotsche Center remains a difficult place for visiting teams to succeed. In 13 years under Sandy Botham, the Panthers are 113-56 at home. The Panthers went just 7-7 at home last season, but recently posted a schoolrecord 13-3 home campaign in 2005-06. In league play, those numbers are even better as Milwaukee boasts a 78-24 home record. That number has gotten a boost lately, as the Panthers have won 63 of their last 80 home league games over the last nine seasons. UWM has also posted three perfect home league years, going 8-0 in 2003-04 and 7-0 in both 1999-2000 and 2000-01. Taking Her Game Down Under Welcome To Milwaukee Five newcomers will pepper Milwaukee s roster in 2009-10, including three junior college transfers. Anne Breland and Nicole Holman played for national championship teams last season. Breland was a two-time NJCAA Division III All-American and led Rochester Technical and Community College to the DIII title last season. Holman helped Kirkwood Community College to the DII championship after playing at Tennessee-Martin as a freshman and during a redshirted second season. Ciera McGaughy comes from Des Moines Area Community College after being one of the top point prep guards in the state of Michigan. Milwaukee also added a pair of Michigan prep stars in Sammy Theut and Sami Tucker. Theut was the Class D State Player of the Year, while Tucker was named to the Class A All-State First Team. Lining Up The 2009-10 Schedule The Panthers have yet to finalize their 2009-10 schedule, but they do know the basics. UWM will take on eight total post-season teams from last season, including NCAA Division I Tournament teams in Green Bay and Evansville. It will also host UW-Stevens Point in an exhibition game. The Pointers advanced to the Sweet 16 of the DIII tournament. Milwaukee also hosts rivalry games with Wisconsin and Marquette, both of which advanced multiple rounds in the WNIT. Other WNIT Teams on the docket are Dayton, Illinois State and Butler. The Panthers also take a trip to Seattle, Wash., where they will take on 20-game winners in South Alabama (21-11) and Seattle University (20-9) at SU s tournament. League Success The Panthers are looking to continue a strong tradition of success in the Horizon League in 2009-10. Milwaukee has finished second-or-better in UWM will certainly miss many of the seven lost letterwinners, but probably none more than Traci Edwards. Edwards capped her decorated career as the program s, state of Wisconsin s and Horizon League s all-time leading scorer. A two-time league player of the year, she was also the first woman in school, state or league history with 2,000 career points and 1,000 rebounds. With a collegiate career like that, she was bound to get notice from professional teams. Following the season, Edwards signed with the Caboolture Suns of the Queensland Basketball League and picked up where she left off. In her pro debut May 30, she finished with 30 points and eight rebounds. She was averaging 20 points and 10.3 rebounds per game over her first seven contests. It s Not How You Start, But How You Finish Milwaukee may have had a down year in league play, going 7-11 and earning the seventh seed in the league tournament, but that didn t stop the team from advancing to the league title game for the third time in team history. The Panthers became the first team to advance to the title game after playing in the league s first round since the round was added in 2001. To get there, they had to win three games in five days in three cities. That week, Milwaukee beat No. 10 Youngstown State Monday at home. It then knocked off No. 2 Butler in Indianapolis Wednesday, before coming back Friday and eliminating No. 3 Cleveland State in Green Bay. It Wasn t All Fun And Games The Panthers may have felt like a team of destiny, but they didn t sit back and coast to the league title game. They faced a 10-point deficit with just 2:50 to play at Butler. UWM scored the final 11 points of regulation for the 53-52 win. Two days later, Cleveland State scored the first 14 points of the semifinal contest. Unfazed by the daunting task, Milwaukee went on a 21-7 run to tie the game at 21-21 and ran to a 63-57 win.
