Volume 15 Issue 3 March 2015 The Garden Hackle March Program March Program Mike S[date] turza, owner of Lost Creek Fly Shop will be giving our March 2015 Program. His talk will be about the fishing the Cowlitz River watershed for Steelhead and cutthroat trout. He will also talk about fishing for Tiger Muskie. Plan to attend and hear this interesting presentation. MARCH CLUB OUTING Tom Bolender will be leading a club outing for searun cutthroat. Meet at noon on Sunday March 15 at Twanoh State Park. Google Twanoh for directions or contact Tom. Leader s Line Leader s Line By Tom Bolender The sun is shining and Westport is calling my name. On March 8th the morning of the daylight savings time change, I m hooking up the boat and going for a drive. It s not too often you can find good enough weather to take my little boat to the jetty. As I ve mentioned in the past I like to drop my crab pots and fish while those Dungeness crab scurry into my pot. Ling cod doesn t open until the following weekend but that doesn t mean I can t catch and release a few if I m lucky. My main quarry is Black Rockfish (Bass). I ll be using double hooked Clouser Minnows for the most part. You can expect a report at our next meeting. Tom

lorem Volume ipsum 15, Issue dolor 3 March 2015 Don Freeman Conservation and Political Chair Your help is needed to gather data on migration patterns and density of Sea Runs in the sound. WDFW biologists who are advocates for these trout have started a program of marking fish to see how many are subsequently caught, and where. This the message I received from James Losee, area biologist, who has spoken to the club a couple of times. James is a cutthroat enthusiast, from both a scientific and fisher's perspective and is a member of the team which will soon publish their study, which has been in progress for years. We have contributed both volunteer time and money to this project. "Recently we had the opportunity to collect some data from coastal cutthroat in south sound. We placed a small (size of a toothbrush bristle) GREEN or ORANGE tag under the skin on the left side of the bottom jaw of a number of trout. A picture is attached below. Please keep an eye out for these and let us know if you see them. We hope to have future opportunities to tag more fish as this study plan becomes developed but for now go fishing and look for the tags. " You don't have to do anything out of the ordinary to these fish, you'll spot the tags as you release them. No need to photograph or measure them, just look for a piercing in their face, kind of like ordering at Starbucks. Then contact James (info below) and let him know roughly where you caught the fish. While the tagging took place in area 13, the protocol requires that just where can't be revealed to keep the study impartial, and what they want to know is how far the trout will roam. Here's a picture, and James' contact info: James P. Losee Fish Biologist Region 6, WDFW (360) 902-2741 james.losee@dfw.wa.gov 2

1 lorem Volume 15 Idssue ipsum olor 3 March 2015 issue, date More on the NWYCFFA by Tom Bolender On another note, I d like to say a few things about the Northwest Youth Conservation Fly Fishing Academy. Many of our members have donated great amounts of time to keep this tradition alive. Our club makes a $500 donation each year to sponsor a youths attendance at the academy. Below is the hand written thank you card from Jeremy Day, the youth we sponsored last year. Because handwriting is easier for some to read than others, here s what it says: Dear South Sound Fly Fishers, This past week at the academy has been the experience of a lifetime. Before this camp, I had never even touched a fishing rod, and I had not given much thought about the health of our rivers, lakes, and ponds. Now, thanks to your support, I have become comfortable with the skill required for fly fishing, and I have come to realize the dire situation of this planet s bodies of water. Although the Academy has completely exhausted me out by now, I still thoroughly enjoyed all the lectures, skill development lessons, and fishing trips. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to gain knowledge and skills that I will take with me for the rest of my life. Sincerely, Jeremy Day In addition to our sponsorship of Jeremy, our club also manages the Alan Harger fund. Alan was a past member who dedicated much time and personally sponsored a youth every year. His dedication to the Academy continues through the fund by continuing this yearly sponsorship. Tom Bolender Tom, Thank you for sharing this. Also Thank you Mike Clancy and Jim Brosio for all you do to promote NWYCFFA. Gene Rivers, Editor 3

lorem Volume ipsum 15 dolor Issue 3 March 2015 Pay Your Dues Now and Save! LAST CHANCE TO SAVE ON DUES!!!! Treasurer s Creel Hello Fly Fishers, A big THANK YOU to those members that have re- upped by either bringing in their dues checks or cash to club meetings or mailing in their dues checks to SSFF PO Box 2792 Olympia 98507-2792. For those of you that have not yet paid please pay your dues at the club meeting this month. If you are unable to make the meeting, please, put them in the mail. Dues remain at $30 until the end of March and then go up to $40.00 a year. The club board decided to hold the dues at $30 for the first quarter of the year before raising them. So take advantage of this opportunity by paying them this month. Some of you are including an extra $5 or $10 earmarked for the Al Harger Fund to help those kids that want to attend the academy but need help in paying the full tuition. There will be a table in the back of the meeting room for dues. There will also be a club roster on this table for your review. Please take a minute to check that your contact information is up to date especially the email address you would like the Garden Hackle emailed. Tight loops, Dave Field - - Club Treasurer NW Youth Conservation and Fly Fishing Academy Once again I would like to remind folks of this incredible opportunity for our 12-16 year old boys and girls to learn about our great sport of fly fishing and conservation. In the past, our club (SSFF) will sponsor one youth and the Allen Harger Fund will sponsor youth. So if you have a grandchild, neighbor, son or daughter that would like to learn our sport, have them write an essay on why they would like to attend and they will need a letter of recommendation from their school counselor or science teacher. The Academy next year is the last week of June. June 21-27, 2015 at the Grinwood Community Center on Hicks Lake in Lacey WA. We are on Facebook with lots of pictures and applications are on our website www.nwycffa.com or you can call me at 253-278- 0061, or Jim Brosio at 360-943- 9947. Mike Clancy Co- Director 4
