profile THE legend in F1 : scuderia ferrari The Ferrari marque is famous around the world for producing the fastest and most exotic road cars, and it is widely regarded as one of the most important symbols of Italian class and style. Much of the company s reputation is built on its success on the race track. Ferrari is the only team that has been involved in the FIA Formula One World Championship since its inception in 1950, and many agree that the presence of Ferrari is what makes F1 what it is.the team s roots extend back to the 1930, when former driver Enzo Ferrari began managing a team of Alfa Romeos. He adopted the prancing horse badge that was to become so famous after it was originally used by WW1 fighter pilot Franceso Baracca. Ferrari proved a more successful team manager than he had a driver, and after WW2 he decided to create road and racing cars of his own. The first Ferrari was born in 1947. After early success in sportscars the team turned its attention to single seaters. When the World Championship was created three years later, Ferrari was ready. scuderia ferrari Alberto Ascari was Ferrari s first great driver, and he won the World Championship in 1952 and 53, before losing his life in a testing accident at Monza in 1955. Juan Manuel Fangio won the title in 1956, and Briton Mike Hawthorn added another two years later. With rivals Alfa and Maserati dropping out of the sport, Ferrari in effect became Italy s national team, earning a special place in the hearts of fans. Other titles went to Phil Hill in 1961 and John Surtees in 1964. Niki Lauda, who triumphed in 1975 and 77. After Jody Scheckter s title success in 1979 the team endured two decades of near misses. Enzo Ferrari died in 1988, and while the team lost some of its previous mystique, it continued to receive enthusiastic support around the world. Alain Prost nearly triumphed in 1990 and after a slump in fortunes the arrival of new boss Jean Todt in 1993 began a slow recovery. The signing of Michael Schumacher in 1996 was the key, and so began a remarkable era. The German won five times in 2000 4 before retiring. Ferrari s most recent title was earned by Kimi Raikkonen in 2007, although Felipe Massa lost out at the final round in 2008, as did Fernando Alonso in 2010 and in 2012.
