As a team, Idaho ranks in the top 100 in four categories. The team is No. 28 for 3-point field goal percentage (.387), No. 38 for field-goal percentage (.471), No. 89 for assist/turnover ratio (1.06), and No. 91 for turnovers per game (13.2). Brandon Wiley earned WAC Player of the Week honors for the week of Jan. 19-25 after scoring 16 points on 7-of-10 shooting and adding seven rebounds, four blocks, and two steals vs. New Mexico State. He also hit two baskets in the final 47 seconds to help Idaho pull away for a 10-point victory. Thursday s game vs. Boise State will be broadcast live on KTVB News Channel 7 at Boise, Idaho, ESPN Full Court, and espn360.com. With nine wins, Idaho has earned its most wins in a season since the 2003-04 Vandals finished 14-16 overall. Idaho is off to its best start since the 2002-03 team also started the season 9-10. Idaho has seven wins at home for the first time since the 2003-04 season. In seven home games, Idaho is averaging 74.1 points per game and holding opponents to just 57.2 ppg. The Vandals are shooting 49-percent from the floor, 37-percent from the 3-point line, and outrebounding opponents 35.1 to 30.5. Idaho plays seven of its last 11 regular season games at home. Idaho s 67-57 victory over New Mexico State broke a 10-game losing streak to the Aggies and was the first Idaho victory over NMSU since joining the Western Athletic Conference in 2005. Idaho s 67-47 victory over Hawai`i was its largest WAC victory since joining the conference in 2005. Idaho s 78-73 win at Nevada was just its third WAC road win since joining the conference in 2005. The victory broke a string of sevenconsecutive losses to the Wolf Pack and gave Idaho a 1-0 conference start for the first time since defeating Utah State to open the 2004-05 season in the Big West. Idaho s loss at New Mexico State was its first of the season when scoring 70 or more points. Idaho is holding WAC opponents to 36-percent shooting in its three wins, but is allowing 54-percent shooting in its three losses. Idaho has six losses by 10 or less points. Idaho has held opponents under 50 points three times this season for the first time since the 2004-05 season. The last Idaho team to hold three Division I opponents under 50 points were the 1987-88 Vandals. Idaho earned three wins in November for the first time since the 1998-99 season. Idaho has eight players shooting at least 43-percent from the floor this season. Idaho has assists on 57-percent of its field goals this season. Idaho has allowed opponents just three double-doubles this season. Idaho has at least one block in all games this season. Idaho s win at Sacramento State was its first non-conference road victory since Nov. 16, 2006 at South Dakota State; a span of 16 games. Idaho s 54-point victory over UC Irvine was its largest margin of victory over a Division I opponent in school history. The previous record was a 53-point margin vs. Pacific in 1983. It ranked as the second largest margin ever at Idaho behind a 111-34 win over Northwest College in 1987. Idaho eclipsed the 100-point plateau for the 34th time in school history with 101 points vs. UC Irvine. Idaho is 32-2 all-time in games in which the team reaches 100 or more points. Kashif Watson tied an Idaho school record with 20 free throw attempts vs. Evergreen State. Idaho signed Shawn Henderson from North Idaho College and Joe Kammerer from North Eugene (Oregon) High School to letters of intent to play basketball for the Vandals next fall. Michigan State scored 100 points Nov. 16 to end Idaho s streak of 491 games without allowing an opponent to score 100 or more points. The streak was the longest in the WAC and a top 10 streak in the nation. The last Idaho opponent to accomplish the feat was Simon Fraser State, Nov. 14, 1991. The Vandals won the game 116-101. The last opponent to score 100 or more points and win was Idaho State, March 1, 1985, in a game that ended 102-99. Idaho outrebounded #6 Michigan State 33-31 and grabbed 14 offensive rebounds. Don Verlin became the 17th Idaho coach to win his Vandal debut. Don Verlin joined the University of Idaho family as head coach of the men s basketball team March 24, 2008. Verlin s staff consists of assistant coaches with 34 years of combined coaching experience. They are Mike Score, Ray Lopes, Mike Freeman, and director of operations Chris Helbling. Idaho s 2008-09 roster includes five returning players and 12 newcomers. Of the 12 newcomers, four are Division I or four-year college transfers, six are junior college transfers and two from high school. Idaho s 2008-09 schedule features 30 regular-season games, which ties for the most in school history. It is the largest amount of regularseason games in a season which does not feature participation in a tournament. Idaho has 27 dunks this season. Marvin Jefferson has 17, Brandon Wiley has seven, Luciano de Souza has two, and Kashif Watson has one. Idaho has made at least one 3-point field goal in 331 consecutive games. The last time Idaho failed to record a 3-pointer was Feb. 27, 1997 vs. Long Beach State. The streak includes 1,923 made 3-pointers and includes 123 games of seven or more made 3-point shots. the boise state broncos THE SERIES This will be the 85th meeting between the Vandals and Broncos as the two teams have met every year since the 1970-71 season. Boise State has won the last 14 meetings. Idaho s last victory in the series came at the Cowan Spectrum dedication on Feb. 17, 2001. Five of the last 10 times the two teams have met, Idaho has held a lead or been tied at halftime. THE LAST MEETING Trailing by 25 midway through the second half, Idaho nearly put together an impossible comeback before falling 78-64 at Boise State Feb. 2, 2008. The Vandals strung together a 21-7 run and pulled within 11 points on two occasions, but two untimely turnovers thwarted Idaho s comeback. Idaho committed 12 turnovers in the half that contributed to 22 points for Boise State. The Broncos also grabbed nine offensive rebounds and held a 23-15 rebounding advantage at the intermission. THE 2008-09 Broncos The Broncos enter Thursday s game with a 14-5 overall record and are third in the Western Athletic Conference standings at 5-2. Boise State has consecutive win streaks of five and seven games and also has won its last two. The team is 3-4 on the road this season, including 1-2 in WAC contests. As a team, the Broncos average 71.7 points per game and have two players scoring in double figures. Boise State ranks in the top 5 in the WAC in 11 of 19 overall statistical categories and ranks first in assists and assist/ turnover ratio in WAC games. Kurt Cunningham currently leads the conference in field goal percentage at 70-percent and Ike Okoye ranks first in blocked shots at 2.05 blocks per game. One of the most unique nicknames in sports, Vandals has been the nickname for University of Idaho athletic teams for more than 80 years. Area sportswriters coined the nickname as they tried to describe the tenacity with which coach Hec Edmundson s basketball teams played defense. It first was used in 1918 strictly for the men s basketball team and officially adopted for all teams in 1921. The sports editor of the school newspaper, Lloyd Jazz McCarty, along with the dean of the College of Liberal Arts, Edward Maslin Hulme, made the final push for the nickname to be adopted, both as a tribute to the intensity of the athletic teams and to the Norsemen of old.

Hawai i, 73-61 Idaho 67, New Mexico State 57 MOSCOW, Idaho The University of Idaho men s basketball team scored the final eight points to break away from visiting New Mexico State for a 67-57 victory Saturday. In a game with nine lead changes and five ties, Idaho (9-10, 3-3) made the outcome look lopsided by holding New Mexico State (9-11, 3-4) scoreless over the final 2:03. The Aggies hit a 3-pointer with 2:03 remaining in the contest to pull within 59-57, but the Vandals hit their last three field goal attempts while New Mexico State missed its next five attempts and a free throw and Idaho pulled away for the double-digit victory. We played as good a defensive game as we have played all year, Idaho coach Don Verlin said. Our pressure finally wore them down in the final minutes and we got them to miss some shots and turn it over. That led to a couple baskets at the end to stretch the lead. It was a lot closer than a 10-point game. Mac Hopson led all scorers with 23 points and added six rebounds, four assists and four steals. Brandon Wiley finished with 16 points, seven rebounds and four blocks and iced the game with a jumper and breakaway dunk in the final 47 seconds. Kashif Watson scored 11 points and grabbed seven rebounds and Marvin Jefferson added 10 points. As a team, Idaho held a 35-34 advantage in rebounding and grabbed 10 offensive rebounds. The Vandals scored 19 points off 13 turnovers and outscored the Aggies 34-14 in the paint. Idaho also grabbed nine steals and finished with a season-best seven blocks. The lead changed three times in the first five minutes before Idaho gained a 10-7 advantage on a 3-pointer from Luciano de Souza. The Vandals held the lead for the remainder of the half and eventually stretched it to as many as eight on two occasions. Idaho led 29-21 with 3:38 remaining in the half, but New Mexico State charged back with an 8-2 run to make the halftime score 31-29 in favor of Idaho. Idaho pushed the lead to as many as six on two occasions to begin the second half and the Vandals held the advantage until a 3-pointer put the Aggies ahead 44-43 with 12:00 remaining. The teams jockeyed for five lead changes over the next 6:29 before a 3-point play from Hopson put Idaho ahead for good with 5:31 left to play. The Vandals continued on a 7-0 run to move ahead 59-54 before Jahmar Young cut into the margin with a 3-pointer at the 2:03 mark. The teams exchanged missed field goals before Wiley nailed a jumper from the elbow with 47 seconds remaining to put the Vandals up four. After a missed lay up, Wendell McKines grabbed the offensive rebound and went to the free throw line after a foul. He missed the front end of the bonus situation, but the Aggies again grabbed an offensive rebound. A missed 3-pointer led to an Idaho fast break which Watson finished with a lay in to put Idaho ahead 63-57. Wiley intercepted a pass on the ensuing Aggie possession and went coast-to-coast for a dunk with 16 seconds left. After a missed 3-pointer from New Mexico State, Hopson put Idaho up 10 with two free throws to end the scoring. The win ended Idaho s 10-game losing streak to New Mexico State and was Idaho s first victory over the Aggies since the Vandals joined the Western Athletic Conference. Quoting Coach Verlin On rivalry and Boise State s winning streak: We haven t talked about it at all, to be honest. We have to treat Boise State just like we treat Nevada, New Mexico State, or anyone else. We do know it is a rivalry game and we embrace the rivalry, but it is another game for us. We hadn t had a Player of the Week before that and with some success we are starting to get noticed. Brandon was fortunate enough to get the award, but it is about our team succeeding.
