As a team, Idaho ranks in the top 100 in four categories. The team is No. 45 for turnovers per game (12.6), No. 47 for field-goal percentage (.468), No. 60 for 3-point field goal percentage (.373), and No. 72 for assist/turnover ratio (1.1). With a win Saturday, Idaho would move into second place in the Western Athletic Conference. The 4,731 fans in attendance at the game vs. Boise State (Jan. 29) were the third most in Cowan Spectrum history. Brandon Wiley earned WAC Player of the Week honors for the week of Jan. 19-25 after scoring 16 points on 7-of-10 shooting and adding seven rebounds, four blocks, and two steals vs. New Mexico State. He also hit two baskets in the final 47 seconds to help Idaho pull away for a 10-point victory. With 10 wins, Idaho has earned its most wins in a season since the 2003-04 Vandals finished 14-16 overall. Idaho is off to its best start since the 1998-99 team also started the season 10-10. Idaho has eight wins at home for the first time since the 2003-04 season. In eight home games, Idaho is averaging 72.9 points per game and holding opponents to just 57.4 ppg. The Vandals are shooting 48-percent from the floor, 37-percent from the 3-point line, and outrebounding opponents 34.8 to 31.9. Idaho plays six of its last 10 regular season games at home. Idaho s 63-59 victory over Boise State broke a 14-game losing streak to the Broncos and was the first Idaho victory over BSU since joining the Western Athletic Conference in 2005. Idaho s 67-57 victory over New Mexico State broke a 10-game losing streak to the Aggies and was the first Idaho victory over NMSU since joining the Western Athletic Conference in 2005. Idaho s 67-47 victory over Hawai`i was its largest WAC victory since joining the conference in 2005. Idaho s 78-73 win at Nevada was just its third WAC road win since joining the conference in 2005. The victory broke a string of sevenconsecutive losses to the Wolf Pack and gave Idaho a 1-0 conference start for the first time since defeating Utah State to open the 2004-05 season in the Big West. Idaho s loss at New Mexico State was its first of the season when scoring 70 or more points. Idaho is holding WAC opponents to 36-percent shooting in its four wins, but is allowing 54-percent shooting in its three losses. Idaho has six losses by 10 or less points. Idaho has held opponents under 50 points three times this season for the first time since the 2004-05 season. The last Idaho team to hold three Division I opponents under 50 points were the 1987-88 Vandals. Idaho earned three wins in November for the first time since the 1998-99 season. Idaho has eight players shooting at least 42-percent from the floor this season. Idaho has assists on 57-percent of its field goals this season. Idaho has allowed opponents just four double-doubles this season. Idaho has at least one block in all games this season. Idaho s win at Sacramento State was its first non-conference road victory since Nov. 16, 2006 at South Dakota State; a span of 16 games. Idaho s 54-point victory over UC Irvine was its largest margin of victory over a Division I opponent in school history. The previous record was a 53-point margin vs. Pacific in 1983. It ranked as the second largest margin ever at Idaho behind a 111-34 win over Northwest College in 1987. Idaho eclipsed the 100-point plateau for the 34th time in school history with 101 points vs. UC Irvine. Idaho is 32-2 all-time in games in which the team reaches 100 or more points. Kashif Watson tied an Idaho school record with 20 free throw attempts vs. Evergreen State. Idaho signed Shawn Henderson from North Idaho College and Joe Kammerer from North Eugene (Oregon) High School to letters of intent to play basketball for the Vandals next fall. Michigan State scored 100 points Nov. 16 to end Idaho s streak of 491 games without allowing an opponent to score 100 or more points. The streak was the longest in the WAC and a top 10 streak in the nation. The last Idaho opponent to accomplish the feat was Simon Fraser State, Nov. 14, 1991. The Vandals won the game 116-101. The last opponent to score 100 or more points and win was Idaho State, March 1, 1985, in a game that ended 102-99. Idaho outrebounded #6 Michigan State 33-31 and grabbed 14 offensive rebounds. Don Verlin became the 17th Idaho coach to win his Vandal debut. Don Verlin joined the University of Idaho family as head coach of the men s basketball team March 24, 2008. Verlin s staff consists of assistant coaches with 34 years of combined coaching experience. They are Mike Score, Ray Lopes, Mike Freeman, and director of operations Chris Helbling. Idaho s 2008-09 roster includes five returning players and 12 newcomers. Of the 12 newcomers, four are Division I or four-year college transfers, six are junior college transfers and two from high school. Idaho s 2008-09 schedule features 30 regular-season games, which ties for the most in school history. It is the largest amount of regular-season games in a season which does not feature participation in a tournament. Idaho has 27 dunks this season. Marvin Jefferson has 17, Brandon Wiley has seven, Luciano de Souza has two, and Kashif Watson has one. Idaho has made at least one 3-point field goal in 332 consecutive games. The last time Idaho failed to record a 3-pointer was Feb. 27, 1997 vs. Long Beach State. The streak includes 1,927 made 3-pointers and includes 123 games of seven or more made 3-point shots. the nevada wolf pack THE SERIES This will be the 60th meeting between the Vandals and the Wolf Pack with Nevada holding a slight 31-28 advantage. With a win at Nevada on Jan. 3, Idaho snapped a nine-game losing streak to the Wolf Pack dating back to Jan. 27, 2000. Nevada has knocked Idaho out of the WAC Tournament in two of three seasons. THE LAST MEETING Luciano de Souza and Mac Hopson each scored 16 points and Idaho hit 16-of-18 free throws in the second half to escape the Lawlor Events Center with a 78-73 upset victory over five-time Western Athletic Conference champion Nevada in the conference opener for both teams. Idaho (7-7, 1-0) scored 15 of the first 18 points and answered every Nevada (7-7, 0-1) run in surviving six ties and five lead changes in the second half. The victory snapped Idaho s nine-game losing streak to the Wolf Pack and handed Nevada only its second home loss in its last 22 WAC contests at home. THE 2008-09 wolf pack The Wolf Pack enter Saturday s game with a 12-8 overall record and are second in the Western Athletic Conference standings at 5-2. Nevada had a five-game winning streak snapped with a 72-61 loss at Utah State Thursday. The team is 4-4 on the road this season, including 2-1 in WAC contests. As a team, the Wolf Pack average 69.8 points per game and have two players scoring in double figures. Nevada ranks first in the WAC in steals and turnover margin and leads the league in field goal percentage defense, rebounding offense, and offensive and defensive rebounds in WAC games. One of the most unique nicknames in sports, Vandals has been the nickname for University of Idaho athletic teams for more than 80 years. Area sportswriters coined the nickname as they tried to describe the tenacity with which coach Hec Edmundson s basketball teams played defense. It first was used in 1918 strictly for the men s basketball team and officially adopted for all teams in 1921. The sports editor of the school newspaper, Lloyd Jazz McCarty, along with the dean of the College of Liberal Arts, Edward Maslin Hulme, made the final push for the nickname to be adopted, both as a tribute to the intensity of the athletic teams and to the Norsemen of old.

Boise State, 63-59 Idaho 63, Boise State 59 MOSCOW, Idaho In a season of big wins, this may be the biggest yet for Vandal nation. The University of Idaho men s basketball team treated the 4,731 Vandal faithful in attendance to a 63-59 win over Boise State it s first over the in-state rival in 15 tries. It was good to get a win tonight, Idaho coach Don Verlin said. Our guys played extremely hard. Our team defense was unbelievable tonight to hold them to 37-percent shooting and hold the score down to 59 points. The key to the game was our defensive intensity and our defensive effort. Idaho evened its record at 10-10 and moved to 4-3 in the Western Athletic Conference. Boise State fell to 14-6 and 5-3. The Vandals led by as many as 12 points on three occasions in the second half, but timely baskets were needed to hold off a late Bronco charge. Boise State cut the lead to three with 16 seconds remaining, but Idaho hit 3-of-4 free throws in the final 12 seconds and a large chunk of the Cowan Spectrum s third-largest crowd joined the Vandals on the court for the celebration. Unbelievable, Verlin quipped regarding the crowd. I never thought, early in the season as we were getting this thing going, we would see a crowd like that. It was awesome in the Spectrum tonight. Mac Hopson led all scorers with 20 points and added eight assists and three steals while knocking down 3-of-4 3-pointers. Brandon Wiley added 12 points and nine rebounds and Kashif Watson earned his first double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Idaho hit 24-of-51 (.471) shots from the floor a higher percentage than an 11-of-25 (.440) performance from the free throw line. Maybe a little nervous, Verlin said of the free throw woes. That is definitely something we need to work on because if we get in that situation in another big game, we need to make those. Boise State got 18 points and 14 rebounds from Mark Sanchez, but shot just 21-of-57 (.368) from the floor and 7-of-24 (.292) from behind the arc. Our game plan wasn t to play a lot of zone tonight, but it worked and we went with it. We were very fortunate they missed some shots, but our guys did a great job getting to their shooters and extending out. Our length on the perimeter really disturbed their shots from 3, Verlin said. The lead changed four times in the first four minutes before Boise State grabbed an 11-10 advantage at the 15:51 mark. The Broncos extended the lead to six on three occasions, including a 26-20 margin with 3:46 remaining in the half. Idaho closed out the half on a 9-0 run, thanks in large part to Boise State s 0-5 shooting over the stretch, to claim a 29-26 lead at the half. Idaho extended the lead with a basket to open the second half and steadily built a 44-32 advantage by the 12:39 mark. The lead stayed in double digits until a Boise State 3-pointer cut the margin to 48-39 and then the Vandals went cold. A four minute gap between field goals allowed Boise State to pull within 50-44 with 4:34 remaining, but a timely 3-pointer from Hopson ended the drought. Hopson then scored Idaho s next three points, but Boise State chipped the lead to 56-52 on back-to-back 3-pointers. Terrence Simmons connected on a jumper with his toe on the 3-point line to put the Vandals ahead six with 1:43 remaining and again hit a long two pointer 40 seconds later to push Idaho up by eight. Five straight points from Boise State cut the advantage to 60-57 with 16 seconds remaining, but timely free throws, including two from Trevor Morris with 12 seconds remaining to put Idaho up by two possessions, helped Idaho gain the 63-59 victory. Idaho had not beaten Boise State since Feb. 17, 2001.

Quoting Coach Verlin On rivalry and Boise State s winning streak: We haven t talked about it at all, to be honest. We have to treat Boise State just like we treat Nevada, New Mexico State, or anyone else. We do know it is a rivalry game and we embrace the rivalry, but it is another game for us. We haven t gotten caught up in all that stuff. 2008-09 starting line-ups Starting Line-up Record Hopson, Simmons, Watson, de Souza, Jefferson 2-1 Hopson, Simmons, Watson, Wiley, Jefferson 7-5 Hopson, Morris, Watson, Wiley, Augusto 1-2 Hopson, Simmons, Watson, de Souza, Wiley 0-2 On pace of the game: We play the pace the game lends us. We aren t too concerned about the tempo and will just do what we do. We are fine if we score 80 and win or score 50 and win. On Brandon Wiley being Player of the Week: It is a great honor and we all gave Brandon a hand at practice yesterday, but I told the team an award like that comes from team success. We hadn t had a Player of the Week before that and with some success we are starting to get noticed. Brandon was fortunate enough to get the award, but it is about our team succeeding. Brandon did a great job in all areas of the game last week.
