AUSTRALIAN RULES FOOTBALL SEASON 2016
WELCOME Welcome to School Football for the 2016 season! This booklet is a quick reference guide for questions that you may have on school football FOCUS / PHILOSOPHY OF SCHOOL FOOTBALL School Football acts as an introduction to Aussie Rules Football and allows students to develop a greater understanding of the game while also learning the core skills required to play football. The program is focused on participation and enjoyment in a team environment with all players given equal opportunity regardless of skill level. Over the course of a season players will have the opportunity to play in a wide variety of on field positions. With the focus on participation coaches are required to ensure that player numbers are equated and this can result in players playing for the other side for a quarter or two to even out player numbers. The spirit of the game is to give all available players a game of football. Scores of games are kept and published weekly in Sunday Mail however no premiership ladders are kept and no finals are played. WEST LAKES SHORE TEAMS In 2016 the school will be fielding teams in all available school football competitions (Yr 2/3, Yr 4/5 and Yr 6/7) which are conducted by the Eagles (Woodville West Torrens Football Club) Zone. We would like to thank the following who have offered to volunteer their time to coach the kids this year: Year 2/3 Year 4/5 Year 6/7 Brett Hicks Mitchell Parsons Steve Berggren Individual coaches will advise players of any specific requirements for their team. REGISTRATION FORMS & CODE OF BEHAVIOUR When registering a copy of the Code of Behaviour (green form)that outlines the expectations of players, coaches, parents and supporters was provided. We require all players and a parent / guardian to read this form and abide by the Code of Behaviour. Should you require another copy please contact Leonie Fairall.
SCHOOL FOOTBALL VOLUNTEERS School Football is predominately a parent run activity. We therefore rely on parents to assist in coaching and managing the activities of the school football program to ensure that our children are given the opportunity to enjoy their involvement in playing football. A Parent Group has been established and is focused on: Maintaining a school football program. Registering teams in all three available competitions (Yr 2/3, Yr 4/5 & Yr 6/7) Ensuring that all players have the opportunity to participate in a safe, supportive and encouraging team environment. Focus on development of skills, participation and enjoyment of players rather than a win at all costs philosophy. Fund raising to ensure that players have access to appropriate equipment. Arranging a Presentation Day and other events throughout the year to reward players for their participation. Any parent that would like to take an active involvement in school football and become involved in the Parent Group is encouraged to contact Leonie Fairall on 0403 314 172. HOW CAN PARENTS HELP There is a wide range of activities that need to be completed each week for games to take place and school football to be successful. Some of the areas that help is required in include: Serving at Home Game BBQ s (refer BBQ s section) Keeping scores / goal kickers Goal Umpiring Time Keeping Setting up the oval (boundary cones, putting up Yr 2/3 goalposts) Packing up (taking down Yr 2/3 s goalposts before 4/5 game, re-aligning boundary cones for 4/5 s, putting all cones away at the end of 6/7 s) MODIFIED RULES The rules are modified to assist with development of skills with no tackling or deliberate bumping at the Yr 2/3 level and the level of contact gradually increased through the grades. A grab and release tackle is introduced in Yr 4/5 with full tackling allowed in Yr 6/7. Yr 2/3 s play on an oval approximately ¾ the size of the school oval with 4/5 s and 6/7 s playing on a full oval.

It also assists with raising of funds to be reinvested back into the West Lakes School Football program. and provides a strong community feel. The BBQ relies heavily on volunteer support and parents are encouraged to assist for 2 or 3 games throughout the season. Without volunteer support this important fund raising activity will not be able to take place. UMPIRE FEES While we have a successful BBQ there is no extra weekly charge to pay umpires.
