ONE of the copper petals which was part of the Olympic Cauldron at the XXXth Olympiad in London in 2012, has been presented to the Papua New Guinea Sports Federation & Olympic Committee (PNGSFOC). THE British High Commissioner to Papua New Guinea, Her Excellency Jackie Barson presented the gift from the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games (LOCOG) to the President of PNGSFOC, Sir John Dawanicura. It is a great honour for us to receive this petal, it is an iconic symbol of the London Games and the Olympic Spirit that lives on, President of the PNG Sports Federation & Olympic Committee (PNGSFOC), Sir John Dawanicura said. The gift, which is one of 204 petals which together formed the Olympic cauldron during the Games was designed by renowned British architect Thomas Heatherwick. 2 PNGSFOC SPORTS GARAMUT 21 years of recognising sporting excellence THIS year marks 21 years since the start of the SP Sports Awards. It also marks 21 years of continued sponsorship by SP Brewery as the major sponsor. Over the years, the SP Sports Awards has grown from recognising just a few achievements to a total of 14 different categories. These categories recognise the achievements of individual athletes, officials, teams, clubs administrators and also the media. Other sponsors supporting this year s Awards are City Pharmacy Group of Companies, EMTV, FM 100, Graffiti Signs, Crowne Plaza, Air Niugini and Theodist. Most of them have also stuck with this important event for a number of years. The Awards were launched by the Minister for Sports, 2015 Pacific Games and National Events, Justin Tkatchenko on January 29th this year which also signified the opening of nominations. Closing date for nominations is March 28th with the announcing of the finalists on May 1st before the Presentation night on May 25th. SP Brewery works with the Papua New Guinea Sports Federation & Olympic Committee and the Papua New Guinea Sports Foundation to bring the SP Sports Awards every year. Pini urges public to participate in Awards nominations INTO THE BOX: Nomination forms were placed into a box by Sports and 2015 Pacific Games Minister Tkatchenko, swimmer Ryan PIni and SP Brewery General Manager, Stan Joyce to mark the launching of the 2013 SP Sports Award. High Commissioner Barson presents London Olympic gift to PNGSFOC...from Page 1. middle from which flames came out when lit. Each petal represents the a nation that participated at the London Olympics in 2012. 2012 was a monumental year for the UK for so many reasons. Of course, this included the Opening Ceremony of the London Olympic Games, High Commissioner Barson said. The London 2012 cauldron was central to this and represented every participating nation through a series of handmade copper elements known as petals, with one created for every country taking part in the Olympics, she said. During the Opening Ceremony, the 204 petals for the Olympic cauldron were carried into the Stadium as part of the parade by young people from East London who accompanied each competing nation. The Olympic cauldron in London was smaller than those from recent Games and many people could not see it because it was inside the stadium beside the tracks. However, the organisers and the designer had it made that way with the thought that each of the petals that make up the cauldron would be dismantled during the closing ceremony and sent to each competing nation. As the UK Games become a powerful memory and as part of the UK legacy, these beautifully crafted petals will act as a perpetual symbol of friendship to all those who came to London last summer. I d like to congratulate PNG for being represented by 8 Olympic athletes at the London Games, Ms. Barson said. The cauldron is a symbol of the Olympic Games and to receive an actual part of it is special for the PNGSFOC and the other 203 National Olympic Committees of the world. PNG s CHAMPION swimmer, Ryan Pini has appealed to the public to participate in the SP Sports Awards by nominating their sports personalities. To him, the SP Sports Awards represents the people s recognition of his efforts and achievements in his sport. He said, while his medals represent his accomplisments in the pool, the SP Sports Awards represents the people s recognition for his hard work. Many PNG athletes like Pini compete each year, and this is the people s chance to show their appreciation for them. Nominations are open APPEAL: Pini asks people to participate. in 14 categories for people to mark their teams, clubs, officials, athletes and the media based on their achievements in 2012. PNGSFOC 3 SPORTS GARAMUT Minister launches 2013 SP Sports Awards Nominations are now open THE race for the best sports men, women and Teams for this year is now open following the launch of the SP Sports Awards on Tuesday night (January 29th, 2013) at the SP Brewery Brew kettle in Port Moresby. Minister for Sports, 2015 Pacific Games and National Events, Justin Tkatchenko, launched the 2015 SP Sports Awards encouraging the people to recognise the efforts of their sports representatives by nominating them. As Minister for Sports and the 2015 Pacific Games, I m proud to see our athletes represent our wonderful country with distinction; and I m equally proud to see them rewarded for their efforts through PNG Sports night of nights, the SP Sports Awards, he said. Multiple SP Sports Award winner, Ryan Pini also appealed to the people to nominate their sports personalities who they believe should win one of the awards this year. He said winning a SP Sports Award is a special feeling, and he cherishes everyone of them that he won over the years. While the many medals I ve won represent my sporting accomplishments in the pool, my SP Sports Awards are the recognition of my achievements by those I represent every time I dive into the pool, the people of PNG, he said. The Papua New Guinea Sports Federation & Olympic Committee and the Papua New Guinea Sports Foundation with the support of major sponsor, SP Brewery, presents the SP Sports Awards as recognition for the efforts and achievements of PNG s sports men and women every year and people are encouraged to participate by nominating their favour- KEYNOTE ADDRESS: Minister for Sports, Pacific Games and National Events, Honorite athletes, officials and able Justin Tkatchenko opened the event at teams. the SP Brewery Brewkettle in Port Moresby. Young swimmer experiences winter sports in Korea SHE has never experienced a winter sport before but young swimmer, Jasmine Mileng handled the snow board really well. She even got a medal for it. Mileng did this as a participant during the Dream Program in Korea on January 5th to 17th this year. The program is part of Korea s preparation to host the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang. They have been inviting young people from countries where winter sports are not developed due to various reasons such as climate. Participants are given the opportunity to experience winter sports and also exchange culture and friendship among other youths FRIENDS: Mileng (right) with a friend in Korea during the trip. from all over the world. Every year the Dream Program picks different countries to send representatives and for the first time, Papua New Guinea was represented this year by 14 year old, Mileng and her coach, Vilima Puana. It was very interesting, we had training and activities during the day and at night we had cultural events and other fun and games, she said the still excited Mileng. 150 people representing 40 countries attended this year s event at the Gangnueng Indoor Ice Rink at the Alpensia Resort in Gangwon province. The students were grouped into different winter sports to learn and Mileng chose Snowboarding. It was an awesome experience, it was difficult at first and you fall off a lot but after trying again on the second day, you get used to it, she said. Vare scores first half century for Palm Beach FACING THE BALL: Vare facing a delivery. The first Half century for Palm Beach this season came from Papua New Guinea batsman, Jack Vare in round 9 of the Gold Coast Cricket Competition. His 83 run innings was the highlight of the round although they finished with 9/233 short of a mammoth target of 257 in 40 overs. Vare is among PNG cricketers who are on a Brian Bell scholarship in Australia.

4 PNGSFOC Focused and determined for 2013 Greetings all and welcome to 2013 - I trust everyone had an enjoyable break and is energized for what will be a fantastic year of sports!! To get itself refocused for the big year ahead, your Athletes Commission held its annual Planning Workshop on 26 January 2013. This gave the AC the opportunity to celebrate some SPORTS GARAMUT of its successes of 2012 but more importantly, revisit its 2012 work plan to critique it and look at what worked and what needs improvement. To assist us in this task, the AC enlisted the help of Games Organising Committee (GOC) CEO, Peter Stewart. Peter s extensive experience in dealing with sporting bodies like the Athletes Commis- sion was invaluable in our task as he scrutinized our 2012 work plan and helped us set some goals for 2013. Throughout the exercise, one message stood above the rest, communication is key. In order for the AC to achieve its Vision of being the Voice of the Athletes, the AC needs to reaffirm those avenues of communication already in place and establish new systems and structures for effective communication. With this in mind, the AC s work plan for 2013 will be looking at creative and effective ways to ensure that it is communicating with both the athletes and the National sporting bodies because it is apparent to us that in order for us to communicate our messages effectively, we will need the active participation of both these groups. At this stage, we already have some established forms Sports Shots WE RE A TEAM: Staff of the 2015 Pacific Games Organising Committee gather for a photo shoot in their old office before moving to their new office at the Telikom Rumana in Waigani, National Capital District. We ask that you (both athletes and National sports bodies) utilise these avenues of communication and seek out your Athletes Commission because if we can communicate effectively amongst each other, I am certain that it will only benefit us. Your Athletes Commission is committed to its Vision of being the Voice of the Athletes and we invite you to be a part of this Vision. We wish you all the success for 2013!!
