17269 Wild Horse Creek Rd. Suite 110 Chesterfield, MO 63005 Phone: 636-532-3355 Alex Anderson Junior Golf Director Ali Wells, PGA Director Foundation Programs & Player Development Dear Junior Members and Parents, The Gateway PGA Junior Tour Fall Series is off to an exciting start. We kicked off the fall at Paradise Valley golf course. All age divisions were in attendance for the event and it turned out to be a beautiful day! The following Sunday our juniors made a stellar showing at The Falls Golf Club. There were several great scores and even some par breaking rounds! Be sure to check out the recaps. Despite only conducting one junior event a week, the Gateway PGA Section office still has many things going on. This Saturday, the much anticipated rescheduled Women s Golf day will be taking place at the Quarry at Crystal Springs. It is a day for women of all ages to come together and learn about the game that we all love so much. The following Saturday, September 28 th, will mark the first annual Ozzie and Friends benefit for the Gateway PGA Foundation. Tickets are still on sale and only $25 for lawn seats. Be sure to purchase your ticket before we run out! During the fall the Gateway PGA Junior Tour does a lot of planning and reflecting on the previous season. In the very near future you will be sent a survey to help evaluate this past season. We ask that you please take the time and fill out this survey. Your feedback is what helps us to grow and improve from year to year. The survey will come to you in email form and will be completely anonymous. I want to personally thank you all in advance for your constructive feedback. I also wanted to take the time to address a slight issue we have been having at the fall tournaments. Since there is not a rules seminar required to play in the fall, there have been an increase in the number of rules questions coming in at scoring. The rules of golf are very expansive and at times very difficult to understand. Rules Officials dedicate their lives to understanding the rules of the game. Now, I am not asking our juniors to dedicate their lives to the rules, I simply would like for you to stay sharp on the basic rules of the game. The USGA website (www.usga.org) has several quizzes, FAQ, and even videos to help explain the rules. I have also included a link to a quick rules video from about.com. This should help as a good refresher: http://www.youtube.com/watch? v=v5_c0bllpmw I think it would be great to visit these links and just brush up on the basics! I hope everyone is having a great start to the school year and I look forward to seeing you all very soon. Alex Anderson Director Of Junior Golf Gateway PGA Junior Tour 1

KNOW THE RULES One of the greatest aspects of golf is that its players govern themselves and respect the rules of the game. The game is more fun and rewarding when you play within the rules. Golf is governed by many rules but generally a few basic rules apply to most situations. As a player, you have the obligation to your fellow players to see that the Rules of Golf are followed. This one simple statement will give you an entire philosophy for the Rules of Golf: 'Play the course as you find it, play the ball as it lies and play fairly.' RULE 33-2A/3 EXTENSIVE DAMAGE DUE TO HEAVY RAIN AND TRAFFIC When heavy rains have resulted in many areas of unusual damage to the course (such as deep ruts caused by vehicles or footprints by spectators) and it is not feasible to define them with stakes or lines, a notice to players along the following lines is suggested: "Ground under repair may include areas of unusual damage, including areas where spectators or other traffic have combined with wet conditions to affect materially the ground surface, but only when so declared by a Committee member." Without such notice, Committee members have authority to declare unusual damage to be ground under repair, if so authorized. However, a notice has the advantage of advising all players that relief from unusual damage might be given. 6

RECORDING YOUR SCORE Courtesy of The First Swing Golfer s Guide The objective of golf is to play the ball from the teeing ground to the putting green and into the hole in the fewest strokes possible. You should count every swing, including penalty strokes and misses (whiffs). Your score for the hole is the total number of strokes you play from the tee until the ball is holed. The scorecard lists each hole and a score listed that is considered par. Although beginners may score higher than par, par is a standard to help measure your skill while playing on the golf course. Golfers use special terms for scoring a hole. Finishing the hole with the same score as a par is called making par. Scoring one stroke below par is a birdie and two strokes under par is an eagle. Scoring one stroke over par is a bogey and two strokes over par is a double bogey. The First Swing Golfer's Guide can be found online at www.playgolfamerica.com 9

In golf, your body typically moves, steps and turns only to one side. Because golf is such a one-sided game, your fitness routine should include symmetrical exercises to help keep your body in balance. Some excellent examples of symmetrical conditioning activities are running, walking, swimming, weight training, Pilates and yoga. Stretching exercises are helpful, too. Following are some exercises you can do both before and after your golf game. These work best when your body is warmed up before you start. Standing with your feet about hip-width apart, hold a golf club over your head in both hands, with one hand toward each end of the club. Extend up from your waist, and then bend from the waist to the right side, hold 10 to 20 seconds while breathing slowly in and out in a rhythmic fashion, come back to center, pause and bend to the left side holding 10 to 20 seconds continue breathing. Next lower the club in front of your body, hands in the same position, and turn to the right side for a twist, holding 10 to 20 seconds, come back to center, pause and turn to the left side for a twist, holding 10 to 20 seconds. Set the club down. From a standing position gently bend forward, slightly bending your knees as needed, taking your hands to your ankles if possible, let your head and neck be loose. Take a couple of breaths in and out, relaxing your back, hips and legs. After a few relaxing breaths, walk your hands up your legs, slowly coming to a standing position. Stand with your feet about hip-width apart, place your hands on a golf cart or against a wall about chest high, then walk your legs back from the cart or wall for a back stretch. Lower your hands slightly, if that makes for a better stretch. Breathe slowly in and out, feeling a stretch in your back. Begin to slowly round your back like an angry cat, and then bring it back to a neutral position. Walk your feet back toward the cart or wall as you roll up to standing. Remember to breathe slowly and rhythmically while you go through each of the above movements. Hold each stretch 10 to 20 seconds with no bouncing. Repeat each activity two to three times. These are just a few stretches to get you started; feel free to add more. With the great St. Louis weather, you ll no doubt be playing more golf. Before or after you are on the course, incorporate these stretching routines and enjoy a more balanced approach to your fitness and your game.
