... RADFORD WOMEN S BASKETBALL BY THE NUMBERS 10 Ten underclassmen are set to don the Red and White in 2015-16, which ties RU with High Point for the youngest roster in the Big South. 13 Radford will be gunning for its 13th straight home win Tuesday. The program record for consecutive home wins is 21 (1983-84). 8 The Highlanders have out-rebounded eight of their 10 opponents this season. TEAM NOTES SETTING THE STAGE Radford will look to earn its first Big South win of the 2015-16 season and first home win over Coastal Carolina since Jan. 17, 2013. Series: Radford leads, 42-19. Last meeting: Radford 52, Coastal Carolina 43 (Feb. 5, 2015) In the last matchup, Jordynn Gaymon led Radford with a double-double off the bench, finishing with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Aisha Foy followed with 12 points, while Jayda Worthy grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds. The Highlanders are 25-6 versus Coastal Carolina inside the Dedmon Center. The Chanticleers have taken the last two matchups in the NRV. SCOUTING COASTAL CAROLINA Record: 5-6, 0-2 Big South Last time out, the Chanticleers defeated Wofford, 83-69, in non-conference action on Dec. 21. Coastal Carolina shot 43.3 percent from the floor, while going 9 for 24 from 3-point land. In the victory, Nicole Isaacs led the way with a gamehigh 18 points. Ced Gibson followed with 14 points, eight assists and five rebounds. Coastal Carolina averages 71.5 ppg, ranking second in the Big South, while putting up 70 or more points in six contests on the year. Leading the high-scoring offense is Nicole Isaacs, who averages 11.8 ppg. Rachael Gregory averages 11.3 ppg off the bench. The Chanticleers lead the Big South in 3-point shooting with a 34.9 percentage, going 67 for 192 from behind the arc. Isaacs leads the conference with a 44.3 percentage, making 2.5 3-pointers per contest. The senior went 9 for 16 from 3-point land in an 83-70 win over Campbell on Dec. 1. Coastal Carolina shares the rock, tallying 156 assists for 14.2 per game, leading the conference in both categories. Ced Gibson and Jas Adams rank fifth in the Big South in assists per game, averaging 3.2 dimes each. The Chanticleers put pressure on opposing offenses as they have forced 251 turnovers on the season. They lead the Big South with 126 steals. In two Big South contests on the season, the Chanticleers have been outscored 146-122. RADFORD ROUNDUP Record: 4-6, 0-1 Big South Radford looks to bounce back from a heart-breaking 47-40 loss to New River Valley foe Virginia Tech on Dec. 21. In the loss, Jayda Worthy poured in a team-high 11 points on 5 of 9 shooting. Aisha Foy followed with 10 points, while Lydia Rivers grabbed a season-high 12 rebounds. For her efforts from Dec. 14-22, Rivers was awarded The Crons Brand Big South Freshman of the Week. Rivers averaged 8.5 points and 8.0 rebounds per game, while connecting on 46.7 percent (7-15) of her shots. The Highlanders offense ranks third in the Big South, averaging 65.8 ppg, while posting the thirdbest defense in the conference at 58.7 ppg. With a 43.4 field-goal percentage, Radford leads the Big South, while shooting over 40 percent seven times on the year. The offense is paced by Foy s 13.7 ppg, which ranks seventh in the Big South. While playing with a short bench, Foy has stepped up in minutes played, ranking third in the Big South with 36.5 minutes played per contest. The RU defense can contribute its success to blocked shots. The Highlanders have blocked 50 shots on the season, ranking second in the Big South. Janayla White blocked a career-high-tying four shots in the loss to Virginia Tech as Radford finished the contest with seven blocks. White ranks fifth in the Big South with 17 blocks. Radford is the only team in the Big South that sports three players inside the Top 10 in rebounding. Janayla White ranks fifth (7.9 rpg), Lydia Rivers ranks sixth (7.7 rpg) and Jayda Worthy ranks eighth (7.1 rpg). ADIÓS AYANA... Radford will struggle to fill the void left by 2015 graduate Ayana Avery, who ranks 10th all-time in RU career scoring (1,198). Avery set the single-season (95) and career (261) records for 3-pointers made at Radford. Her 261 made 3-pointers rank fourth all-time in Big South history. She is the 21st member of the 1,000-point club in Radford women s basketball history. The Highlanders led the Big South in 3-point field goal percentage (.337) last season. ROSTER BREAKDOWN RU s 2015-16 roster features 13 players representing nine states and two countries. There are three players from Virginia and two from Ohio. Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Illinois and West Virginia have one player apiece, while Spain is represented on the international scale by Claudia Quevedo. Radford has two seniors, one redshirt junior, five sophomores and five freshmen. The Highlanders boast five players six feet or taller. WHAT A TURNAROUND Radford tied for the sixth-best win improvement from the 2013-14 season to the 2014-15 season. After the Highlanders only won seven games in 2013-14, RU exploded for 17 in 2014-15 (a 10-win improvement). Radford s 10-win improvement only trailed Ohio (18), East Tennessee State (12), Southern Illinois (12), Kennesaw State (11) and UC Riverside (11). CRUNCH TIME RU has played in nine games over the last two seasons that were decided by three points or less. The Highlanders have posted a 7-2 mark in those games. Under head coach Mike McGuire, Radford is 10-6 in games decided by five points or less. #RADFORDRISING

... RADFORD WOMEN S BASKETBALL TRIO OUT FOR 15-16 Sophomores Brittany Allen and Claudia Quevedo suffered season-ending injuries during Radford s preseason scrimmage against Furman. Both guards tore their ACL and will seek a medical redshirt for the 2015-16 season. Allen and Quevedo played in 29 and 30 games, respectively, as freshmen. Freshman point guard Jen Falconer tore her ACL in the Dec. 18 game at Wofford. She will miss the rest of the season and receive a medical redshirt. FOURTH QUARTER FURY Radford has outscored its opponents, 183-152, in the fourth quarter this season. BLOCK PARTY Radford racked up a season-high 10 blocks against Youngstown State, which were the most by the Highlanders since they tallied 11 on Jan. 24, 2015 vs. High Point. YSU had not been blocked that many times since West Virginia swatted 12 on Nov. 11, 2011. The last time YSU was blocked at least 10 times at home was against Detroit on Jan. 13, 2007. RU ranks second in the Big South in blocks (5.0 bpg). MAKE THAT A DOUBLE-DOUBLE Jayda Worthy made a splash in her trip home to Ohio, dropping in her first double-double of the season (10 points, 10 rebounds) against YSU. The sophomore from Toledo, Ohio, notched a double-double in three straight games, bringing her career total to five. DEFENDING DEDMON Radford is currently on an 12-game winning streak inside the Dedmon Center. RU won its final eight games at home last season. The Highlanders last loss at home was to West Virginia State, 58-52, on Dec. 18, 2014. DISHING OUT DIMES Radford ranks second in the Big South in assists per game (13.5). The Highlanders have recorded at least 15 assists in four games this season, twice topping the 20-assist mark. Jen Falconer ranks second among Big South players in assists per game (3.8). Her eight assists against Concord are tied for the most recorded by a Big South player in a single game this season. QUEENS OF THE REBOUND With the depth and athleticism of Radford s post players, the Highlanders lead the Big South in rebounding margin (+7.0). That average ranks 54th in the nation. RU holds its opponents to a league-low 34.1 rebounds per game. Through the Highlanders first 10 games, they have only been out-rebounded twice (at NC State, at Virginia Tech). OH, OVERTIME? The season opener against George Mason was Radford s third overtime game under head coach Mike McGuire. The Highlanders are 2-1 in those games. In addition to the Radford women, the men s team also went into extra time on opening weekend, defeating Georgetown (82-80) in double overtime. It marked the first time in Radford s history both basketball programs went into overtime in their respective season openers. It was just the third time the Highlanders opened their season with an overtime game. 12/05/92 Dayton 92, Radford 90 (OT) 11/04/91 Radford 82, Marshall 79 (2OT) UP NEXT Radford gears up for the 64th installment with its in-state rival Liberty on Saturday. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. inside the Dedmon Center. The Flames have prevailed in nine straight meetings and haven t lost in the NRV since March 3, 2007.... 2015-16 BIG SOUTH STANDINGS BSC Pct. RADFORD WOMEN S BASKETBALL MIKE MCGUIRE Head Coach :: Third Season at Radford @coachmcguire @mamcguire77 Radford University officials introduced Mike McGuire on Wednesday, April 24, 2013 as the Highlanders seventh NCAA head women s basketball coach in program history. Widely recognized as one of the up-and-coming head coaches in the country, McGuire has quickly laid a solid foundation for the program moving forward. In just his second season at the helm (2014-15), McGuire guided the Highlanders to their third WNIT in school history. Radford, which finished with a 17-14 overall record, including a 14-6 Big South ledger, finished tied for second in the Big South regular-season standings. It was the Highlanders highest finish in the conference standings since 2010-11. McGuire s work did not go unnoticed as the conference s 11 head coaches selected him Big South Coach of the Year, marking the sixth head coach in program history to earn the accolade. The Highlanders 10-win improvement from the 2013-14 season to the 2014-15 season was tied for the sixth-best turnaround in the nation. In addition to his coaching responsibilities, McGuire is the Big South Conference Captain, a role he will serve until 2018. He is also the women s basketball head coach representative from the Big South Conference on the NCAA Regional Advisory Committee, which is a three-year commitment.
