Cheerleader of the Week by Vanessa Alicea Varsity cheerleader Andrew Gonzalez has high hopes for his first season. With all his hard work and effort he plans to become a strong cheerleader. Cheerleading has opened up Andrew, he has become a better person and cheerleader overall. Before joining the cheer team, Andrew felt like he didn t belong. He honestly didn t feel passionate about anything. Joining the cheer team has helped Andrew make lifelong friends and people he can always rely on. Being a cheerleader you have to possess some characteristics, you have to have an open & positive mindset, and commitment is big part of the sport. One of Andrew s proudest moments was to make the cheer squad. However, another positive to this accomplishment was the increase to his confidence. Cheer is not as easy as people make it seem. It takes hours of summer practice and preparation. Andrew thinks there really isn t a definition of cheerleader. MHS cheerleaders play a big role in the school s athletic program. Cheer squad members will go out of their way to show school pride. Cheerleading has helped Andrew find a place where he feels safe. He pictured cheer with open hands, he found his herd. He always gives 100% when he s out practicing. Cheer has become a big aspect of Andrew s life. Cheer has helped him become more involved in school and he plans to cheer his senior year. 5
