6 News from Chapter J From Gary and Carol Chapter J Directors Well, 2019, here we come running full speed, starting with the Lansing Boat Show, even before our Gathering! But more on that later. Our January Gathering will be filled with announcements and drawings. We'll learn who we are honoring as the 2019 Couple of the Year and Individual of the Year. It is always so exciting to see who will be given this honor for what they have done this past year. We'll also learn who our 2019 Chapter Charity is. The Drawings will be exciting, too. In addition to our regular sign-in drawing and game drawing, we'll make 3 others very happy. If you wrote an article for the newsletter (an extra article for Team members), you have a chance to win a gift! For every Gathering you attended and signed in, you have that many chances to win One Free Registration and One Night Stay at Wingless Weekend! (value up to $125 with receipts) There s one more drawing that seems important to many of you. Let's see, what was that? Oh, right, it's the Super Draw! Someone in attendance at the Gathering is going home with a bit of money. Yes, you must be present to win the Super Draw. I delivered all the remaining items to the Aware Shelter last week. They were so gratful. Thank you to those who donated above and beyond what the Chapter gave. Anyone who helped at MIS and/or sold tickets last year gave to Aware indirectly through that help. So, thank you, again. So late last night we received confirmation that we could sell our Raffle Tickets at the Boat Show in Lansing on January 4, 5, & 6. This is great! Just now, minutes ago, we received confirmation that we could sell our Raffle Tickets at the RV Show in Lansing on January 17, 18, 19, 20. We do not take these opportunities for granted and very much appreciate them. So let's make sure and take advantage of these dates to sell tickets, promote GWRRA and promote Motorist Awareness to all those who visit the shows. It's strange that 2019 is just arriving, and we are already looking forward to Wingless Weekend in February! The theme this year is Summer camp. This gives you a variety of choices for your attire, as there are all kinds of summer camps. So, think back to your childhood camp experiences, or those of your children, and get your outfit ready!! If you haven t already sent in your registration, please do so soon. And make sure and call for your room reservation. Same price as last year for your rooms. So, let's all go to Summer Camp this winter at Wingless! Looking back over this past year is, well, a wow and thankful moment. Health wise has been a challenge this year for many of us, and our hearts probably take first place for the issues we've all had. We can only say that through it all, we are blessed. We also share our memories with our Chapter Family who have lost loved ones. We lovingly remember Dick Gardner and Larry Bradley. We pray for peace and comfort for Sharon and Karen and their families. We want to once again say Thank You to Mary for all her years serving Chapter J as our Newsletter Editor. She has done a wonderful job and we appreciate her very much. Thankfully she is remaining as our Webmaster. Stepping into the position of Newsletter Editor is Trish Tacey. She volunteered, and we are grateful to have her. I know she will serve the Chapter well. Thank you, Trish, (You saved everyone from whatever my version of the newsletter would have been!) We also want to thank Bill and Deb who have continued to serve our Chapter throughout their year as our Chapter Couple. 2018 will always be Your Year! And to Jeff who has served our Chapter throughout his year. 2018 is Yours! Remember that you are never a former couple or individual. You are the 2018 members forever. So, remember to always watch your emails for any updates of events, rides, or other happenings. We love serving you, thank you for that privilege. Blessings, Gary and Carol Your Chapter J Directors Chapter J C.O.Y. 2013 MI District C.O.Y. 2014 spankyncarol@juno.com or gwrra.mi.coy2014@gmail.com 517.262.0896 or 517.262.6314 6 GWRRA Mi District Rider Educators Dennis and Felicia Schulte December 2018 Article Tis the holiday season, Give the gift of life to an unendorsed motorcycle rider that you know a card that gives them a rider course! And be sure that it is a course that will qualify them to sign up at the Michigan Secretary of State for a motorcycle endorsement. A high percentage of motorcycle accidents are associated with unendorsed operators. Michigan has used the information available to the Secretary of State in their database to notify registered motorcycle owners that they have no valid motorcycle license. Postcards are sent out to these owners that motorcycle training is available and

7 Secretary of State s offices. The Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning, through the Motorcycle Safety Program, have increased motorcycle endorsements in these pasts few years through these postcard notifications. Anything that promotes your safety is a win for Rider Education; sharing your experience with motorcycle riding courses with someone who has never taken one just adds another win that could save a life. We had a Zoom meeting with Chuck Jacobs, our Rider Education Assistant, this past week. A lot of information was relayed to us through Chuck, who received it from the National Zoom meeting. We want to share this information with you because as members, communication is vital to any organization. The former officer s position of Chapter Educator will not be coming back as officers, but some form of the role is still in the works. Numerous people who talked to National Office about the amount of paperwork to be completed by Chapter Educators resulted in the removal of Chapter Educators. Since Levels forms are now to be sent directly to us as the District Educators, and we are the only ones completing the Activity Report, hopefully that dissatisfaction has ended. For the many members in Michigan alone who have talked to us regarding their inability to access the database to review their personal levels information, that has also reached the National Office. We have now learned that the person in the role of the former Chapter Educators but not as an officer will have read only access to the database. The National Rider Education web pages are being updated and changing often. The Officers Handbook still shows the wording of pages, etc. being finalized by the end of October, but that has not happened and will not happen immediately. Reviewing and revisions are continuing. The current Rider Education database (what is visible to you as individual members only) will no longer be kept up for seminars and modules. The District University Coordinator is the only person who can access all seminars and modules in order to teach them, and the only person who enters all the information afterward into a different database. Sue Allhands, Rider Education Assistant, is responsible for entering Rider Education seminars and modules. All requests for seminars and modules must go to the District University Coordinators, Rick and Joy Hebner. District University Coordinators and District Rider Educators are to work together to be sure that the University Trainer is eligible and has obtained the Level required to teach (RE database holds the levels information) a specific seminar/module. Rider Courses and MFA will still be the District Educators responsibility. As you know, we cannot schedule the classes without the universities/colleges/ government complexes involvement. They have not yet begun the next year s calendaring; we will get them scheduled as soon as they start up their calendaring for the new year and yes, we have received four/five requests for an Add-On Rider Course (AORC) which will be added to the 2019 schedule. MFA classes continue to be held as requested; please complete the form and send it to Gary Williams, our MFA Coordinator. Also, please remember that we only have a few instructors; the form requires three possible dates, the venue, and the approximate number attending so that an instructor(s) can be arranged to present. Events/activities/rides (four wheel variety currently) are to be shared with the University Coordinator so that they may be publicized to all GWRRA on the Michigan website. We as District Educators report to National Office on the number of events and activities held so we would deeply appreciate an email to michridered@gmail.com after the event telling us in a couple words what you did and how many participated. Ride Safe and have fun Dale Duncan Chapter J Interim Ride Coordinator Chapter J C.O.Y 2002 daduncan001@aol.com 517-414-5751 From Gordon & Ella Chapter J Assist Directors We were sorry that we couldn't go to the Christmas parade but we forget that we already had a dinner to go to at the Cascades Manor for the Eden foundation. It is an eating disorder, and we have gone for the last two years. Sorry to say we didn't have our December gathering, but that was when Larry Bradley's memorial was. Very nice one also. It was at the Red Fox Gun Club and the place was SRO, Standing Room Only. Our Christmas party was on the 8th of Dec. and I am sure that a great time was had by all. Plenty of food and

8 gifts. If you didn't have a good time and food it were your own fault. We went to Clara's of the River on the 15th, which was also our 39th anniversary. It was a good night. It wasn't too cold to walk around and see the decorations. We were going to go to the casino but we decided to go home. Everyone First I want to welcome and THANK Trish Tacey to our Team as your New Newsletter Editor. Trish, I know you will do a fantastic job, and bring some new ideas to our Newsletter in 2019. I will definitely help you with anything you need or want. This is my first article as your Chapter J Website Coordinator. Now I know just about nothing of how to do lots of things for our Chapter Website. So I m hoping that our Michigan District Web Master Ken Kuiper can help me and all of those out there who are as limited as I am. Right now you won t be able to follow the Chapter J Website links below, as Ken is creating a new Michigan website. The Server that we were using is no longer available, so if you want to see the progress that Ken has made you can go to this link devgwrra-mi.org. The only link available to you may be to the GWRRA website and also the Chapter J Facebook page, which is Chapter Mi-j Hopefully when all is done we will have a much better website for all to use. Also I hope there will be some classes for Chapter Website Coordinators positions easier and their Chapter Shine. This year we are staying in Michigan to spend Christmas and New Years with my family up here. I will definitely miss spending time in Arkansas with my family there. Sometime maybe our family can all get together and spend Christmas together. That would definitely be a miracle. I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year healthy and safe. 9 From Gordon and Ella Chapter J Goodies Coordinators Wear Red on Friday to Honor our Troops Well Hello There Loyal Readers: It's Me Again: (Aren't You All So LUCKY)? Well by the time you read this, Christmas and New Years will have passed. Just wanted to say it has been a busy year for me since my heart surgery back in April. Letting you know, that as of the school break for the holidays, my Veteran's Chapter, for it's presentations, has done over 10,000 students, not counting the Seniors we have done also. We have the rest of the school year to do yet. So it will be a higher number when we are done at the end of the school year for 2019. Just think 2019 is just around the corner. Hard to believe already. This coming year is going to be better for us, we will be able to get more riding in than what we did last year. I would like to take a couple of days and go down to Wing Ding and see what it is like. We haven't been in awhile. Had to finally take the battery out of the bike and cover it up (DARN). I told it good night and would see it in the spring. Now we can't wait for spring to get here. But first I would like some cold weather to freeze the lakes to get some ice fishing in. Can you tell I like to fish? Hope you all had a very nice Christmas and a good New Year? Welcome to (2019). If there is anything you need from the Goodies People, let us know and we will try and get it for you. In the next news letter, I will have some prices for shirts, sweat shirts, and hats, for everyone that wants to know. Well take care and be safe out there and God Bless. One of those opportunities is being your Chapter J Newsletter Editor. I have a long awarding winning legacy to fill and I hope I will not only make Mary proud, but all of you as well. We have many years as a Chapter J family member and look forward too many more. I have no plans to make any changes to the newsletter, but to follow what has been established and continue the legacy. I still do that four-letter word WORK. Any help with articles would be most appreciated. Let me know your thought, activities or just how you re having fun. I know you will all want my email address to send me your articles, so here it is: mootoon1@comcast.net. A few reminders; please don t forget about your Secret Buddy Form, they are on pages 13-14. This is a lot of fun to participate and get to know your buddy better. The best part is the December Christmas Party reveal! I know the boat show may be over, hopefully everything went well and now we can get ready for the RV show in a couple weeks. Don t forget Monica s Annual Card Party starts at 3:00 pm urday January 12, 2019. There s sure to be fun had by all! Bring finger foods and beverages. Remember the GWRRA website is being worked on. Please check the calendar and events page to make sure you don t miss anything you want to participate in. Wishing you all a healthy, and fun filled New Year! Secret Buddies for 2019 Questionnaire is on pages 13 & 14 Can t believe another year has passed, but I finished out the year with a FUN Chapter Christmas party and good food and fun exchanging of gifts. They got me with the box of bowls (I thought), a sneaky man (GR) had wrapped up a set of nice wrenches in the box that had bowls in it. You got me, but pay backs are HECK, HA- HA. Then Mary wanted to do something nice for a lady friend and we took her out to MIS and drove through the Christmas Light display, another fun time, then on to Battle Creek and dinner at Clara s on the river, with a nice walk along the river to look at the lights, a big thanks to Dale Duncan for setting this up, I know this is like a recording, but I, Louie Schippers, am in charge of the 2019 Raffle tickets for Chapter J, so be prepared for me to be getting with you to get your tickets to sell. 12 On the Go with Bear and Donna Your Article Could Be Seen Here!!!! Hello Chapter J Friends! Since we last talked, we had a nice Thanksgiving visit from Mike s oldest daughter and family. We toured Cowpens National Battlefield and walked in downtown Spartanburg. It was nice to play some card games with the grandkids and get to talk to them a bit. We attended the JOY group s Christmas party followed by a great concert by Soul Harvest. The following day we had our Genesis class Christmas get-together at Select restaurant in Spartanburg. Donna s sister Lori came down from Grand Rapids for a week to get some sun. The day after she arrived, it rained all day. That night it turned to snow we got 6 then it turned to ice for the next 10 hours. Of course, everything shut down for 3 days because we have no way to deal with that here! We played a lot of Racko and read books. Needless to say, Lori didn t get to see much sun. After she left, the sun came out, the temps went back to the normal high 50s, the snow melted and we were golfing again. By the time you read this, the holidays will be over. But we still wish y all a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Chapter J in December 2018 Clara s on the River, Battle Creek, MI Until next time, ride safe! Bear & Donna 12
