SERIES HISTORY: In 2014, NAU came to play Hawai i in a pair of matches after the non-conference tournaments. The Bows swept both matches on Sept. 19 and 20. HONOLULU The University of Hawai i women s volleyball team (4-5) faces Northern Arizona (4-5) in a pair of matches this week while also hosting its annual Alumnae Game. The Rainbow Wahine will take on the Lumberjacks on Friday, Sept. 15 and 16 with both matches starting at 7:00 p.m. in the Stan Sheriff Center. Prior to Saturday s match, the Bows will host its Alumnae Match at 5:00 p.m. The Rainbow Wahine went 2-1 in their last pre-season tournament of the year last week. Hawai i fell in a fi ve-set heartbreaker to No. 10 BYU but battled back to defeat Baylor in fi ve and then swept Nevada in the tourney fi nale. Junior outside hitter McKenna Granato led UH this past week with 61 total kills, averaging 4.69 kills per set. She also notched a pair of double-doubles and was in on six blocks. Senior middle hitter Emily Maglio had a solid tournament and was named to the all-tournament team for the third time this year for her efforts. She racked up 41 kills while hitting a team-high.407 while having a hand in 18 blocks (two solo). Sophomore setter Norene Iosia dished out 153 assists averaging 11.77 per set while leading UH with four aces (tied with Savanah Kahakai) and second in blocks with 10 (one solo) and third in digs. Senior libero Kahakai posted a team-high 52 digs in the tournament and is climbing up the UH ranks in career digs.

NAU comes to Hawai i after hosting last week s Lumberjack Classic where they went 1-2. NAU fell to Utah State and Arizona State but defeated CSU Bakersfield in four in the tourney finale. The Lumberjacks are led by Kaylie Jorgenson who has 115 kills, while Abby Akin has a team-best 26 blocks. Kahakai Climbing in the UH Career Record Books Fast Senior libero Savanah Kahakai not surprisingly leads UH with 140 digs thus far this season. Her 52 digs this past week helped her to leapfrog over three UH All-Americans to land at No. 8 all-time in UH history with 1,141 career digs to start this week. In the Outrigger Resorts Volleyball Challenge, Kahakai passed former No. 10 Lily Kahumoku s 1,104 (1999-2000, 2002-03) then overtook No. 9 Martina Cincerova s 1,111 (1985-88) and then surpassed Suzanne Eagye s 1,138 for No. 8 (1984-87). Kahakai has started all nine matches this year and has started the last 69-straight matches. This year she also has chipped in with 28 assists and eight service aces--three alone coming against No. 10 BYU last Thursday. Kahakai has recorded double-digit digs in six out of UH s nine matches this year--including a career-high 28 against UCLA (8/27/17). Kahakai has been the starting libero for the Rainbow Wahine since her sophomore year. Now as a senior, Ah Mow-Santos is happy with how far she s seen Kahakai come from when she coached her in club ball. Her court presence and ability to speak to the girls as a leader and run the court is what has landed her the role of starting libero. Kahakai started all 29 matches last season and became the 14th member of the Rainbow Wahine 1,000 career dig club. As a junior she notched double-digit digs in 26 career matches. Granato Stepping Up On The Outside Junior outside hitter McKenna Granato leads the Bows with 153 total kills and averaging 4.25 kills per set thus far this season. She is also third on the team with 90 digs and six service aces. She and Norene Iosia are the only two Rainbow Wahine to have tallied double-doubles this season. Granato recorded a pair of double-doubles last weekend with 23 kills/13 digs against No. 10 BYU and 22 kills/13 digs against Baylor. Granato also had three-straight 20+ kill games spanning the last two tournaments. She has four 20+ kill matches this season--including a season-high 29 in a five-set loss to No. 13 UCLA. For her career, she needs 21 kills to hit the 500-career kill milestone. This past summer, the junior outside hitter was selected to the U.S. Collegiate National Team-Minneapolis (CNT-Minneapolis). Granato trained and competed alongside 35 of the nation s top collegiate volleyball players in Minneapolis, Minn. She was the lone representative of the Big West Conference. The CNT-Minneapolis squad, which was part of USA Volleyball s High Performance pipeline, is considered a second tryout for the U.S. Women s National Team, will train from June 22-26 at the University of Minnesota. Afterward, the athletes will be assigned to one of three 12-member teams and compete in a round-robin format at the Minneapolis Convention Center from June 27-30. Granato was one of nine outside hitters on the roster. Last season as a UH sophomore, she was second on the team with 293 kills (2.9 kills per set) and third with 24 service aces. Granato notched 30 total blocks and 167 digs as a sophomore for the Rainbow Wahine. Maglio Steady in the Middle Senior middle hitter Emily Maglio is currently second on the squad with 98 kills. She is hitting a team-high.366 hitting percentage. Maglio also leads UH with 51 total blocks (four solo) averaging 1.42 per set. Against South Dakota, she recorded a season-high.786 hitting percentage pounding 11 kills with no errors in 14 attacks. Last week she posted a career-high 18 kills in a five-set thriller over Baylor. Maglio is the lone Rainbow Wahine to earn all-tournament honors in all three of UH s tourneys this season. Maglio has impressed the Rainbow Wahine coaching staff since stepping into a starting role at middle hitter as a sophomore. She continues to strive to improve her game after earning AVCA All-America honorable mention and all-big West first team honors last year. Maglio started every game last season, averaging a league high.400 hitting percentage with 133 total blocks. With Maglio s work ethic, the coaching staff believes that she will once again be a solid force in the middle for the Bows. She may also expand her role to play defense and play all the way around the six rotations. For her career, Maglio has put down 530 kills averaging 2.11 per set with 297 total blocks (22 solo) and 1.18 blocks per set. Maglio has played in 82 career matches during her collegiate career. Iosia Running Efficient Offense Sophomore setter Norene Iosia dished out a career-high 63 assists in last week s match vs. Baylor (9/8/17). She was ultra efficient leading the Bows against South Dakota two weeks ago (9/1/17) as UH hit.446 with just one hitting error on the first play of the match. Overall, Iosia has dealt out a team-high 373 assists and 15 aces while putting up 97 digs and 30 blocks. She leads UH with five double-doubles thus far--including two last week with 50 assists/12 digs against BYU and later 40 assists and 11 digs against Nevada. Iosia had a busy summer playing on the U.S. Women s Junior National Team. She competed in the 2017 FIBA Volleyball Women s U20 World Championships in Boca del Rio and Cordoba, Mexico. Iosia and MacKenzi Welsh (Michigan) were the two setters selected to the squad after being chosen from the 16-player training group from July 2-11 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. Ah Mow-Santos is only the third head coach in program history. She is considered one of the most decorated players in school history, with an impressive resume that includes three Olympic Games appearances, two first-team All-America selections, and is a member of the school s Sports Circle of Honor and Hawai i Sports Hall of Fame. As a Rainbow Wahine player, Ah Mow-Santos played for Shoji from 1993-96 and was a two-time AVCA first-team All-America selection (1995 and 96), and a three-time all-conference performer (1994, 95 in Big West and 1996 in WAC). The Honolulu native ranks third in the UH record book in career assists (4,313) and fourth in assists per game (11.23), and in her final two seasons at Hawai i, she guided the team to a 66-4 combined record which included an appearance in the NCAA title match in 1996. Following her playing career at UH, Ah Mow-Santos went on to compete for the U.S. Women s National Volleyball Team from 1999 to 2008 and was regarded as one of the top international setters in the world. She was the team s starting setter in the 2000 and 04 Olympic Games and in 2008, she helped guide Team USA to a silver-medal finish at the Beijing Olympics. She also played professionally in Italy, Portugal and Switzerland. While playing for Volero Zurich in Switzerland, she earned the Swiss League s most valuable player award. At the conclusion of her playing career, Ah Mow-Santos was a student assistant for two seasons as she continued to pursue her bachelor s degree. From 2011-15, Ah Mow-Santos served as assistant coach under Shoji, mentoring former UH setter Mita Uiato, who earned three all-league and all-region honors and honorable mention All-America status. In 2014, she was on the coaching staff of U.S. Junior National Team for the NORCECA Women s U-20 Continental Championship. She currently coaches club volleyball for the Vegas Aces. Ah Mow-Santos prepped at McKinley High School in Honolulu where she was a four-year first-team all-oahu Interscholastic Association East selection and a three-time first team all-state pick. Ah Mow-Santos is married to Niobel Rafael Santos and they have three children. Junior Casey Castillo once again is doing whatever she can to help the team. The outside hitter spent some of the opening weekend sliding over to play in the middle. Against UCLA, Castillo posted a career-high 15 kills with a.342 hitting percentage. She also added three block both against the Bruins and Marquette. Overall, Castillo, who has since played primarily on the outside, has 79 kills averaging 2.26 kills per set with 28 digs and 17.0 total blocks (one solo). Rookie Middles Holding Their Own UH s freshmen middle blocking duo of Sophia Howling and Skyler Williams have combined for 40 kills and 39 blocks. Williams has started seven matches thus far and has contributed with 29 kills and 30 total blocks overall. Howling has appeared in six matches with one start and has put down 11 kills while racking up nine blocks including three solo. Williams was a bright spot in first weekend of games, earning Big West Freshman of the Week honors. Taking on three tough opponents last week, Williams started each match and emerged with solid numbers of 1.69 kills and 1.62 blocks per set. She also hit a respectable.258 while amassing 22 kills and 21 blocks. In her collegiate debut she notched six kills,.294 hitting and 12 block assists in a narrow five-set loss to Marquette. The 12 blocks was the most for UH since Olivia Magill totaled the same amount versus St. John s on Sept. 6, 2014. Bows Drop Out of the AVCA Poll for just the 11th time in History For only the 11th time in AVCA history, the Rainbow Wahine fell out of the Top 25 Coaches Poll. UH entered the season ranked at No. 20. The last time UH was not ranked was in November of 2014. That season, UH went unranked for seven weeks (9/15, 10/13, 10/20. 10/27, 11/3, 11/10, 11/17). Those seven weeks was the longest Hawai i has ever been out of the polls in one season. UH however battled back to be in the Top 25 in the final three polls of the season, ending the year ranked No. 23. The only other year UH was unranked was in 1992. That season the Bows were unranked for three weeks (11/3, 11/10, 1/17). Hawai i is looking for it s first win of the season after going 0-3 in their opening week. Outside Hitters Looking to Fill Void This year s outside hitters need to fill the void both offensively and defensively left by the graduation of two-time All-American and two-time Big West Player of the Year Nikki Taylor and All Big West first team player Annie Mitchem. Taylor was the team s terminator the last two years. As a senior, Taylor led the league and Hawai i with 4.54 kills per set, 0.61 service aces per set and 5.76 points (kills + blocks + aces) per set. She finished the regular season ranked No. 2 in the NCAA DI in aces per set; No. 5 in points per set; and No. 14 in kills per set. Taylor also led Hawai i with 386 kills, 52 total aces, 490.0 total points, was second on the team with 97 blocks, and third on the squad with 196 digs. Her averages in kills, aces, digs (2.33), and blocks (1.15 p/set) were all career-highs. Upon returning after missing the first three weeks of the season, Mitchem came back with a vengeance in the last 20 matches. She logged 198 kills (2.91 kills/set), 10 service aces, 50 digs and 58 total blocks. Combined, Taylor and Mitchem accounted for 584 total kills and 155 total blocks, which equals to 41.3% of UH s kills and 57.4% of their blocks from 2016.

She took over the reins from Dave Shoji whose legendary career spanned the last 42 seasons. Ah Mow-Santos was two-time first team All-American setter under Shoji. She played from 1993-96 and led the Bows to a 66-4 combined record including the NCAA Championship match in 1996 during her collegiate career. She is just the third head coach in the 43-year history of Rainbow Wahine volleyball. Following her collegiate career, Ah Mow-Santos went on to compete for the U.S. Women s National Team from 1999-2008 and was regarded as one of the top international setters in the world. At the conclusion of her playing career, Ah Mow-Santos was a student assistant for two seasons as she continued to pursue her bachelor s degree and later served as Shoji s assistant coach from 2011-15. Shoji finished his career with a 1,202-204-1 career record during his career. The 1,202 wins is the second most in NCAA history. He led UH to four national championships (1979, 82, 82, 87) and 25 conference titles. Under Shoji UH received 86 All-American selections, eight national Players of the Year awards, and five Olympians. He was named National Coach of the Year five times and was named Coach of the NCAA 25th Anniversary Team. UH Picked to Finish First in Big West Hawai i was selected to capture its third straight Big West Conference championship in the women s volleyball preseason poll as voted on by the BWC s nine women s volleyball head coaches. The Rainbow Wahine, who have gone a combined 31-1 en route to its last two regular-season titles, received six firstplace votes and 78 points. Cal Poly received two first-place votes (71 points), while Long Beach State received the other first-place vote and 65 points to be slotted third. This year marks a new era as former UH All-American setter and assistant coach Robyn Ah-Mow Santos takes over the program following the retirement of legendary coach Dave Shoji. UH went 23-6 overall and 15-1 in the Big West in 2016. The Rainbow Wahine advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament and finished 17th in the American Volleyball Coaches Association s (AVCA) Poll.
