From our staff to you and your family, we wish you a healthy, peaceful and prosperous 2019! This year we are going bigger and better with every event. We will start the year with our first Rio Bravo Pro Am on January 27-28, with 60 professional golfers from Golden State Tour to be paired with 60 amateur golfers. We are now accepting entry forms which is open for members or non-members with a 25 and below handicap. We will also start our monthly wine tasting on the first Friday of every month starting February 1st at Café Med, Rio Bravo Country Club and we will continue to have our all time favorite Taco Tuesday, Super Bingo, Members Welcome Party and Wine Down Wednesday. Looking back, the ownership has completed multiple capital improvement projects at the Club with our new fleet of EZGO golf carts, new irrigation system, brand new beverage cart, range cart and utility carts. A few weeks ago, we received our new rough mower and fairway mower to help improve our golf course maintenance projects. We also completed major repairs at the club house, renovated the banquet hall, replaced some of the clubhouse furniture and one of our big project for, was opening a new Café Med Restaurant. 2019 will be a year of continuous improvement and you can expect more positive changes in our membership services as we aim to make Rio Bravo Great Again! I would like to thank you again for your continued support, loyalty and commitment to make Rio Bravo one of the best golf courses in Kern County. We are looking forward to the upcoming year and making 2019 the best yet. Lyndsay Ervine General Manager
Golf Course Update Here we are in September and the summer is coming to an end. We Well have made is over it through and 2019 theis hot here! months Wow! We are not there in total owners. With these machines we will improve on the quality of cut and the time itcoverage, takes to mow but the I believe grass. we are on the right track and are heading in a positive direction. Next year I do plan on pre-emerging the fairways, roughs, tees and greens to prevent the crabgrass from establishing. So far this year has been a mild winter. As of this writing, going to the last weekend This year of the I know year, we we haven t have a had lot, any butfrost thedelays. crab will I dogo expect away frost once to occur the attemperatures some point, but drop. for now Until it has that been time nice we not are to hand have topulling delay tee thetimes crabinout the mornings. of the greens We haveas alsobest received we acan. goodthe amount greens of rain. still Thisputt has helped well, irrigate but I the understand course how allowed unsightly us not have it is. to use the irrigation system. Since November 19 th, I have run the water on the course only 2 times for 6 minutes on each Tee s, Roughs and Fairways. Greens have been only hand watered when needed. We have continued trimming trees on the course, painting yardage markers in fairways, and weed-eating around the lakes. I m hoping to be able to find some people to hire after the holidays so we can get more accomplished on the course in 2019. With the new equipment and a larger crew I think this year we will be successful in making strides in the overall maintenance of the golf course. Andy Heinze Golf Course Superintendent
GOLF SHOP Cart policy The maximum number of carts allowed in a single group is (2) per foursome, (2) per threesome, and (1) per twosome. Rio Bravo Country Club and its staff will enforce this policy. If one decides to ride alone in a golf cart, it will be an extra $15 charge to fund additional aeration, seeding/sodding and fertilization in response to the added traffic. Thank you for your cooperation. A fivesome using five individual carts is an example of unnecessary wear damage to the turf and soil compaction that often requires additional resources to correct. (USGA Green Section)
FROST DELAY: 5 THINGS EVERY GOLFER SHOULD KNOW - USGA Green Section 1. Crunchy grass is vulnerable to damage. Golf course turf is normally resilient to traffic, but when ice crystals form inside the plants, they become brittle and vulnerable to damage. Walking or driving over frostcovered grass may rupture plant cells, leading to dead turf. Or the plants may be weakened without immediately showing the effects. It can take grass more than a month to recover from this damage. 2. When it comes to frost delays, location is everything. Many of us have looked out our windows at home and seen no signs of frost, only to find a frost delay when we reach the golf course. This is because frost can linger in colder microclimates long after other areas have thawed. North-facing slopes, lowlying areas and areas sheltered from the wind are especially likely to remain covered with frost. If you are worried about a potential frost delay it is best to call the golf shop to check on conditions at the course before leaving home. 3. Closely mown turf is at high risk. Frost damage can occur on any part of the golf course, but it poses the greatest risk to closely mown turf. Putting greens are particularly vulnerable because they experience the most concentrated traffic. A foursome typically takes 300 steps or more on each putting green; if there is frost present, all those steps could cause serious damage.
When large trees shade primary playing surfaces, especially on early holes, the course must remain closed even if the frost has melted elsewhere. 4. A little frost can cause big delays. No signs of frost on the first tee? That doesn t mean you will get the all clear sign. If frost remains in areas that are unavoidable early in the round, the course must remain closed. It is also important to remember that once the frost is totally clear, the maintenance staff will need time to catch up on course preparations before play can begin. 5. More light goes a long way. Shade extends frost delays by preventing sunlight from melting the frost. Pruning or removing trees that shade primary playing surfaces can improve the course s overall health and reduce the duration of frost delays. This is especially true on holes played early in the round. The shade from a few trees can keep an entire course closed.
