Athletics Newsletter February 23, 2016 Men s Basketball Previous week: 0-2 College of the Desert men s basketball wrapped up its 2015-16 season with a pair of losses in Foothill Conference action, as they fell to Barstow and Victory Valley by scores of 104-73 and 103-75, respectively. Gabe Solache led the Roadrunners in their setback to Barstow on Wednesday evening, scoring 21 points and collecting seven rebounds. Zach Waites scored 19 points on 6-9 (66.7 percent) shooting, while Kenny Lewis added 14 off the bench. Athletics Newsletter February 23, 2016 Women s Basketball Previous week: 1-1 College of the Desert women s basketball ended its 2015-16 season on a high note last weekend, as they defeated Victor Valley in a thrilling 77-72 overtime triumph. Earlier in the week, they fell at home to visiting Barstow, 64-61. Chelsea Reese led the Lady Roadrunners in their thrilling win over Victor Valley on Saturday afternoon, scoring 20 points on 8-18 (44.4 percent) shooting. Yuka Ando added 19 points, while Bianca Gutierrez scored 14 off the bench. Women s basketball finishes their 2015-16 season at 12-17 overall, while reaching a 28 mark in the Foothill Conference. Athletics Newsletter February 23, 2016 Baseball Previous week: 0-2 College of the Desert baseball dropped a pair of home games last Saturday afternoon to visiting Orange Coast. The Roadrunners came up just short in a 2-1 defeat in game one, before dropping the second matchup, 18-0. In their game one loss, DJ Hernandez went 1-2 with a double and a walk, while Dax Roerig went 1-1 with the lone Roadrunner RBI. Travis Tanaka walked once in three plate appearances, and also scored a run. Right-hander Jumpei Akanuma was stellar on the mound for COD, allowing just two runs on eight hits through six-plus innings of work. He struck out four and issued just a single walk. Baseball travels to Cypress for a 2 p.m. game Tuesday afternoon, and then hosts San Bernardino on Saturday at noon. Jumpei Akanuma delivers home
Athletics Newsletter February 23, 2016 Softball Previous week: 2-1 College of the Desert softball picked up a pair of wins on Saturday afternoon, after dropping a 10-0 contest on Friday against Santa Ana. The Lady Roadrunners took down Golden West in Saturday s first game, 4-3, then followed it up by defeating San Diego in game two, 6-4. In game one against Golden West, Brianna Alcorn led the Lady Roadrunner offense with three hits and two runs, while fellow sophomores, Jolene Ruiz and Taylor Stone, collected RBIs. Freshman Angelika Cabanyog earned the win on the mound for COD, allowing just three runs (one earned) on four hits over her seven innings of duty. She also struck out six and walked just one. Alcorn collected two more hits and scored another run in game two, with sophomore Amanda Martinez collecting one hit and an RBI. Sophomores Liz Moreno and Yizel Nunez, along with Jolene Ruiz, smacked one hit each. Nunez also earned the win for the Lady Roadrunners, allowing four runs on seven hits over seven innings of work. Softball will be back at home this Saturday afternoon for a pair of games against Southwestern. First pitch of game one is set for 12 p.m. Team congratulations are in order after a big win
Athletics Newsletter February 23, 2016 Men s Golf Previous week: Second Place College of the Desert men s golf continued its solid start to the 2016 season, as they took second in the Mt. San Jacinto Invitational on Wednesday morning. The Roadrunners finished with a team score of 380, which landed them just behind tournament host, Mt. San Jacinto, and their tally of 376. Sophomore Michael Starbuck led COD with a score of 73, while sophomore Blaine Baker finished just behind him with a 74. Sophomore Mike Schaloum shot a 76, with sophomore Sam Jackson s 78, along with 79s from sophomore Ryan Emery and Kenzo Vlassaks, wrapping up the Desert participants. Men s golf earned a first place finish in yesterday s Pacific Coast Conference match, and will next participate in the Riverside Invitational on Monday, February 29. Men s Tennis Previous week: 0-2 College of the Desert men s tennis opened their 2016 season with a pair of tough losses on the road, losing 9-0 to Mt. San Antonio last Tuesday before falling 6-3 against El Camino on Thursday. In their loss to El Camino, Jakob Bohn earned a 6-3, 6-3 singles win, with Julien Bettonville doing the same in his singles match. The duo continued their winning ways into doubles, earning an 8-2 win for the Roadrunners. Men s tennis opens its 2016 home schedule next Tuesday, March 1 with a 2 p.m. match against Victor Valley.
Athletics Newsletter February 23, 2016 Women s Tennis Previous week: 2-0 College of the Desert women s tennis remained perfect in their early 2016 schedule, taking down Mt. San Antonio at home on Tuesday afternoon by a score of 5-4. The Lady Roadrunners followed it up with a 6-3 win at El Camino on Thursday. In their 5-4 win over Mt. San Antonio, the Lady Roadrunners were led by singles victories from Lauren Joy (7-5, 6-3), Diana Cole (4-6, 6-3, 6-3) and Miyako Kinoshita (61, 6-1), while the duo of Kinoshita and Karen Rodas earned an 8-3 win in the first doubles competition. With the match tied at 4-4, Linda Guerzize and Yu Yamada pulled out an 8-6 triumph in the final doubles matchup of the day, sealing the 5-4 win. Women s tennis will be at home Tuesday afternoon for a 2 p.m. match against Rio Hondo. Linda Guerzize returns a serve against Mt. San Antonio
