Newsletter February 2012 FROM THE COMMODORE Andrew Rissik Well we are two months into 2012 already and this is our first newsletter! Apologies for the lack of news, but we have been so busy with lots of exciting events. We have had more new member applications than we have had resignations over the past quarter which is very positive in terms of membership growth. Welcome to all the new members and your families and all the best to those members who are no longer on the ship with us. The Southern Charter SAS Youth Nationals was a resounding success! I have received several emails congratulating us on what has been termed the best Youth Nationals ever! Thanks to the committee and all the other members who made themselves available for this event! The result of all of this is a wonderful deck that was built specifically for the event and will be used and enjoyed by members for many years to come thanks Chris Shearar for your hard work! Sailing: At both Youth and Adult level, HYC was well represented in both the Youth Nationals and the recent Points Regatta. Our club sailing seems to have suffered a bit this year so let s try and finish the season off with a bang! THIS WEEKEND there is Dinghy & Multihull racing as well as Youth sailing & racing. We continue to look at infrastructure improvements and next on the agenda are the Galley yard area and the Galley electricity supply. Thanks to the Galley for the wonderful support to all sailors and visitors during all the recent events! There are less than 12 weeks until our closing cruise, so please plan to get some sailing in before the winter winds start blowing! Check out the calendar http://www.hermanusyachtclub.co.za/pdf/hyc-2012.pdf See you on the water.

FINANCE Tracey Wellington FINANCE: Whilst the club is in a wonderful position financially, there are several members who have not bothered to pay their subs and other fees. We have in excess of R50, 000 due over 90 days. This is rather disappointing when everyone has had the opportunity to arrange a plan if in need of financial assistance. The manager will be phoning the members concerned and if the accounts are not settled their membership will be suspended. YOUTH SAILING Jacqui Low 082 788 3223 or andjac@tekniheat.co.za 25 & 26 FEBRUARY 2012 This weekend will be a normal training weekend but hopefully, weather permitting we can sail over to Mosaic Farm for some fun and sweets. There will be racing laid on for those who wish to participate. CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS Over the weekends, 17/18 th and 24/25 th March is the Club Championships so we will hold a Junior Club Championships for those wanting to race but there will also be junior training. THE SAS SOUTHERN CHARTER YOUTH NATIONALS Congratulations to our Juniors who participated! In the Optimist A Fleet: Matthew Rissik and Christopher Kode In the Optimist Novice Fleet: Emily Low (2 nd ), Andrew Low (4 th ), Thomas Warren (6 th ), Cullen Keytel (7 th ), Kerry Collingridge (8 th ), Sam Warren (9 th ) - ALL IN THE TOP 10! SCOOTERS Many of you have scooters, which are great fun at the Yacht Club, and you have been driving very well generally. However we need to keep the Yacht Club safe so we are asking that scooters are only driven where cars are allowed to go, to avoid knocking into people, damaging vegetation or people falling over scooters. Remember: Pedestrians have right of way. Also, please do not park in entrances or on the patio or outside the TV Room. TV ROOM & JUNIOR ROOM Please look after our Yacht Club. Respect all property and if something gets broken TELL US and STOP others being destructive.

FROM THE CHAIRMAN OF SAILING Bruce Keytel What a fantastic December and January we have had sailing at the club with the following events taking place: The Southern Charter SAS Youth Nationals with 211 boats. Well done to Roger Bartholomew for steering a successful event and flying the club burgee high... View the photo gallery by visiting: http://www.hyc.co.za/event-sc.php From the 28 December 2011 we held the first twilight series at the club. This was a huge success. We had one start for all classes, so we had Lasers racing against Cariocas and Hobies. To put them on an equal footing we had to apply the Portsmouth handicap rating to the elapsed times of the individual boats. This worked well and we peaked with a fleet of 10 competitors in the one race. Dane Collingridge taking the winnings of this event. A happy new year was had by all, the hangover race was not sailed due a lack of wind, but I think a few sighed with relief that this event was cancelled. The sailing office has already hosted another two events this year the first being the Hobie 14 provincials. Lindsay Johnson organized this super event. Well done and thanks to those that helped. There was only a five boat fleet with two entries from HYC, Justine Laver and Andrew Rissik, Mr HOBIE, won this event... The annual point series regatta was very successful; with 93 entries (12 from HYC). Special mention must go to Gary Shaw for winning the laser radials, Peter Du Preez for finishing second by 2 points and to Dane Collingridge for winning the Laser 4.7 with Greg Willcocks finishing second by 2 points and Murray Willcocks getting a second in the 29er fleet. It struck me at this event how many up and coming junior sailors were sailing in the Optimist A Fleet (16), B Fleet (12) and Dabchicks (16). It was our aim to ensure that all of the juniors got prizes for taking part. Well done to all those who were involved. Thank you to all those dedicated people who helped out at the regatta. This event was a great success and thank you to those that allowed us use of their Cariocas and power boats. I would like to make a special mention to those sponsors that AGAIN have gone above and beyond! Southern Charter, Sable FX, Coca-Cola, ADT, Manex Marine and Oggie who supplied us with Rash vests prizes for the kids, they are manufacturers of sun and beachwear for all ages and the swimwear also boasts a CANSA UV! UPCOMING EVENTS NOT TO BE MISSED LOXTON & BRODY TROPHIES 25 & 26 FEBRUARY 2012 Dinghies and Multihulls FROG RACING & PUB SUPPER 17 MARCH 2012 These evenings are always great fun. Clear your diaries and join us! This is on the first weekend of the Club Champs. For those of you who have not been part of the frog racing, I suggest you make an effort! An early, light pub supper will be available after the racing. Keep an eye out for the event invitation and make sure you book on time... CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS - 17 & 18 MARCH AND 24 & 25 MARCH Dinghies and Multihulls

GALLEY & ENTERTAINMENT Karine Wiggins NEW YEARS PARTY This New Year s Eve Celebration went off with a bang Thank you to everyone who assisted with the planning and preparations! Our dining experience began in a blue and white nautical room with twinkly cactus plants. We ate like Kings and Queens with a delicious Prawn Cocktail starter, followed by gorgeous thick cut fillets and accompaniments the sauce was super! Dessert was a creamy Tiramisu, oh decadence and delight! Thanks to Denise for a yummy spread and all those who assisted with the preparation of the fillet, serving and clearing afterwards. The children were set up in the TV room and had a super time. VALENTINE S DINNER Thank you to everyone who came and celebrated Valentine s Day with us at our annual Valentine s Dinner. The evening started with sunset, champagne and snacks in the bar as the deck was a bit windy. The menu proved to be outstanding and Denise outdid herself again. The kids were entertained with Valentine s paraphernalia like flashing hearts and glow sticks before the Smurfs entertained them. The evening was characterized by a relaxed, family atmosphere and good company amongst friends and members. Thanks to all the girls who helped with the serving and to Martin Schultz for providing the music. For those of you who missed out on this event please be sure to diarise it for next year!

SALDANHA SAS WESTERN CAPE SAILING CHAMPIONSHIPS RESCUE SUPPORT REQUIRED There has been a request from the organisers of the SAS Western Cape Championships at Saldanha (6-9 April 2012) for HYC to provide a crewed rescue boat; the skipper can either use a club rescue boat or his own craft.
