The Jefferson Shooter Official publication of The Jefferson State Shooting Association Inc. DECEMBER 2013 YOUR LOCAL SHOOTING SPORTS ASSOCIATION ANNUAL CHRISTMAS PARTY! We re having another one while it s still kind of OK to call it that even though it s not politically correct. Circle the date FRIDAY, DECEMBER 20 at 6:00 PM. We ll be in the meeting room at the Klamath County Museum. The entrees, bread, potatoes, salad and soft drinks will be supplied by JSSA and, as in the past, most everyone brings a side dish or a dessert. There s always some great treats on the side tables. We will be having a WHITE ELEPHANT GIFT EXCHANGE after dinner. If you ve never participated in one, simply bring a wrapped gift to the party. The gift can be anything you choose and it s not necessary that it be new. Gag gifts are as good as something valuable. You will be chosen by lottery to go to the table and choose a gift. The person who follows you has the option to steal your gift or to choose a wrapped gift from the table. Gifts can be stolen three times but the person who is chosen last can steal any gift. There will also be a FASHION SHOW of sorts. Judging for Best Christmas Hat and Best Christmas Sweater or Shirt will be done by the congregants. The prizes may or may not be appropriate. The party starts at 6:00. We hope to have some early arrivals to help set up the room. The cooks will be on the job at 5:00 to make the kitchen ready. Call Mike Monciardini, Bill Watson or Leon Williamson to let us know you will be attending so we can be sure to have plenty of food. Leon Williamson. JSSA P.O. Box 7178 Klamath Falls, Or. 97602 Cowboys Christmas Dinner! The Klamath Cowboys will be hosting their annual Christmas dinner, Dec. 11th, 6:00 pm. at Wubba's. Bring an unwrapped gift for Toys for Tots. I will see that is gets to the Marine Corp League. Hope to see everyone there. Happy Holidays-Jasper COMING EVENTS *************************** GUN SHOW 7th & 8th CHRISTMAS PARTY 20th ELECTION OF OFFICERS JANUARY 20th Affiliated with the National Rifle Association of America Oregon State Shooting Association Member, Oregon Association of Shooting Ranges Editor-Floyd Hancock LAST LEAD SMELTER IN U.S CLOSES! The last lead smelter in the U.S. located in Herculeaneum, Missouri has closed due to excessive EPA emissions standards. The plant processed ore into pure lead that was used primarily for cable sheathing, solder, lead sheet, oxides in glass and ceramics, bearing metals, brass and bronze billets and caulking lead. Fear was generated by the closing that it would adversely affect bullet manufacturers, a fact that has been discounted by makers of Sierra bullets. The company states most of the lead used in their bullets comes from recycling in the secondary market with items such as car batteries and scrap lead sources.(sierras as we know are some of the best on the market). Concern was also raised that the U.S. would ultimately have to rely on other countries for a lead supply that would drive up prices and be subject to their questionable metallurgical standards. This apparently is not considered a concern by domestic bullet makers. (internet) Next meeting at Klamath County Museum 1451 Main St. 6pm January 20th 1

If it is delayed until Wednesday before the match chances are slim it will make the H&N. ******************** Josh and Chelsea have a new baby GIRL and HER name is Olivia! My mistake. ********************** Drawing for the Taurus 327 on pg 5 will be December 8th at the gun show. There are tickets still available at Bill s Upholstery. Bill would also like to thank all those that participated in the work party to lay up firewood for the 50 and 200 yd ranges for the winter. ******************** Dan Gettling is still looking for some raffle ticket sellers and other volunteers for the gun show. Please call him at 541-882-4533 if you can spare a couple hours. ********************** Winners of the monthly raffle were Mike Monciardini who chose a 325 rnd. Box of 22 ammo and Jim Ferris who selected a multi tool from Leon s stash. ********************* Range improvement report. Improvements to the Wickline 600 yd range have been ongoing with the completion of the down range safety warning system. Siding has been installed as a wind break on the south end and most of the west side. Still to be installed are sign boards with the range rules posted and instructions for the proper use of the range warning light system and the safety stripe on the range deck. Painting of the storage container in park specified brown or green is still to be accomplished along with parking area surfacing. Progress is being made on the multi-purpose training range with the placement of numerous truck loads of fill for the back berm from the 200yd to the 600 yd range. Although fill material was pulled from locations throughout the park Phil Doddridge and his volunteer workforce went as far as assets permitted. Though fill material was exhausted the berm will be completed as fill becomes available either through donations or purchase. (see pix on pg 6) A grant from the NRA Foundation has been applied for to provide surfacing for the range floor and side berms for the various bays. Other grants will be applied for as the need is discovered. The existing 50 yd bay will be absorbed into the multi-purpose complex and extended to accommodate a 100 yd facility for multi-gun training. Fencing will most likely also be installed to provide controlled access to the area for safety purposes and limit use to activity directly supervised by JSSA RO s and certified range safety officers. The general public is invited to participate in all supervised shooting activities with prior proper safety briefing. The 200 yd range now has a reestablished 50 yd berm and a sand floor to reduce ricochet hazard. It has been discovered that the sand may be washed away by rainfall and drainage so sand bags will be procured and set to the north edge of the range to prevent the erosion and deter damaging vehicle traffic. Long time manager of the Miller Island Wildlife Refuge Lanny Fujishin retired on December 1st into the private life. Lanny and his wife Becky who also retired from local veterinary practice will be leaving the Klamath Falls area for much quieter surroundings in Adrian, Oregon. Adrian is on the Snake River that divides Oregon and Idaho, south of Ontario with Boise, Idaho not that far away. Adrian City Hall photo is at right so the town is not very big by the looks of the municipalities official offices. It is my understanding that Adrian is not on the way to anywhere and that you must specifically intend to go there. Lanny will be returning periodically to continue his instruction in firearms safety and to qualify persons for their concealed handgun licenses. He will also be continuing instruction in other areas of the state and be coming to our JSSA gun shows in the spring and fall. The move will put them closer to their son Chris and wife Theresa in Milton Freewater but further from their daughter Courtney who is attending OIT. The local community will surely miss him and Becky. 6
