1st team cup story in 2011 The Macmillan Cup saw us reach the semi finals where we lost to Guisborough. The winners of this competition would go on to compete against other regional winners before playing in the Cockspur cup on TV. Earlier in the competion we had beaten barnard Castle in an excellent game at their ground. Some good innings were made by both sides but the highlight had to be the century by Rajin Saleh. 13 fours and 3 sixes saw rajin s 50 ball innings win the game. He was ably supported by 63 from Liam Coates. In the Kerridge Cup it took 4 attempts to complete the game due to rain. The third attempt saw us on 93-3 with 5 overs left of our innings. Rajin and Doug had been dismissed for 42 and 45 respectively. On our return several nights later, James Dobson and Simon Lee had 5 overs to bat. Lee (17) supported Dobson who gave a display of hitting in his 41 off 32 balls to give us a respectable total of 152 3 In reply Peter Armstrong never conceded a bounday in his 17 overs (4-47) AND Doug Mulholland had 4-78 as we won by 24 runs.our ¼ final encounter with marton eneded in disaster. A decimated team only managed 72 and the visitors won easily. The Saunders Cup saw us progress with easy wins to the semi finals. A long wait for the other half of the draw to complete their games meant we were very late in the season when the due date had arrived. Incelement weather and the organisers refusal to postpone the final meant our semi final was decided on the toss of a coin. We lost that and Crook went on to beat Boldon in the final two days later. Our 15 15 competition this season was as poor as in earlier years. Failing to win a game again we never managed to really get our tactics right for this form of the game. Bishop Auckland from our group eventually went on the win the competition. Having lost all our gropup games we endded up last in group C. We lost our ¼ final Saunders cup game at Swalwell. Again a weakened side did not help our chances. We ran out 10 runs short in our run chase with Liam Coates top scoring with 39.

Five games into the season without a win, 2 losses and three draws and yet there was no panic. Each of the first 5 games could have gone either way and we certainly knew we could with a bit of luck have clinched victories against Barnard castle where we were 6 runs short in a drawn match, Billingham where we lost by 1 wicket could easily have been a win, Middlesbrough at home saw us fail to dismiss the last two Boro batsmen in a drawn game and against Guisborough we could remove their last batsman. We then began a run of 4 wins on the trot., beating Marton, Bishop Auckland, Northallerton and Normanby Hall. Against Marton (away) we restricted the title favourites to 200-5. In reply our strength in batting was evident as we knocked off the runs for the loss of only 2 wickets. Simon Lee scored a half century and Lee Hutton had a great knock scoring 96 not out. (Lee also missed several overs with a hand injury) Doug Mulholland was the star performer in the win over Bishops at Feethams. 77* with the bat and 4-46 with the ball helped us to another win. 6-51 from Doug earned us a third consecutive win at Northallerton. The 4th win came at Normanby Hall and saw our overseas pro Rajin Saleh hit a century. He scored 110 to help us pass their total of 230-9 (Peter Armstrong took 5 wickets for us) Our winning run was interrupted by rain as the match at Stokesley our next opponents was cancelled. Two defeats followed this. We lost at home to Richmondshire and away to Northallerton. Back to winning ways with a great win over Great Ayton at Feethams. Rajin Saleh (80) and wicket keeper James Dobson (51) saw us post 179-8. Liam Coates (5-31) then bowled Ayton out for 111. Colin Biglin's 46* helped us save the game against Barnard Castle and Doug managed 5-72 in the drawn game. Wins then followed over Billingham and Hartlepool. Liam Coates hit 87 and 77 in these two victories. We then lost our momentum with a poor performance at Bishops but holding out for a draw a loss to Normanby Hall despite70 from Rajin. Against Marske we won by 54 runs Rajin hit 79 and Peter Armstrong took 4-24.

Then a draw with Stokesley at Feethams saw Doug hit 51 and Liam take 3-60 and we were back in the top 5 of the league. Rajin Saleh hit 90 and Jack Vickerman 45 at Richmondshire before rain drew a halt to proceedings. We then faced Marske again in our penultimate games of the season and our last appearance of the year at Feethams. Winning the toss the seasiders were inserted by Armstrong and Liam Coates and Doug Mulholland made the most of the conditions. A wicket with lots of grass, very damp and green had the ball moving all over the place. Marske were dismissed for just 64 in 28 overs. Liam had 5 wickets and Doug 4. Wicket keeper James Dobson added another 3 catches to his season s haul. We began our innings before tea was taken and immediately realised it was going to take some skill to see us over the line. We lost Rajin for 15 and we were 16 for 2 with both openers dismissed. Hutton, Mulholland and Coates all fell foul to the moving ball. Josh Carroll and Chris Allinson were making the ball move as much we had earlier in the day. Dobson s 13 from 35 balls steadied the ship however and we limped home to win by 3 wickets. This was a weekend of strange results in the Premier league. Hartlepool who had been top capitulated against bottom side Northallerton to allow Marton who annihilated Bishop Auckland and plunged them to the bottom of the league to go top by 10 points. Only a handful of points now separated Bishops, Marske and Northallerton at the bottom as teams prepared for the last weekend. The final game of our season was at Great Ayton. With Jon Grainge their wickete keeper asnd ours, James Dobvson level on 33 victims before the game at the top of the Premier wicket keepers averages, Ayton won the toss and fielded first as rain was forecast and heavu showers had already fallen. A good move as it turned out with Ayton s keeper catching Saleh and Coates as we finished on 153-9.Simon Lee batted really well for his 53 with 9 fours in his total. In reply 83 from Chris Batchelor assured the home side of victory and with Richmondshires game cancelled they went third and we had to settle for 5 th. An improvement on last year s 7 th position, a very young side did very well and achieved more than many outsiders had predicted for them. Hopefully the side can stay together for the next few seasons and if they continue their improvement could push for honours.

David Piper did an admirable job as scorer throughout the season and must be thanked. The various mums, wives and girlfriends who did teas for the 1sts must also be thanked. And finally thanks to all who suppoprted us in 2011. Darlington First Team 2011 Overall Overall Summary Matches 24 Won 9 (38%) Lost 7 (29%) Drawn 6 (25%) Cancelled 0 (0%) Toss Won 11 (46%)

The 2011 Overseas professional Rajin Saleh became the first ever Bangladeshi International cricketer to not only play for Darlington but also to play in the NYSD Premier league. He missed the first couple of games but made an inauspicious debut at Hartlepool. Still jetlagged having arrived only the night before he scored a duck. Once he began to pick up the pace and bounce of the English wickets he began to produce some exceptional innings. A first league century at Normanby Hall was followed by a cup century off 50 balls at Barnard Castle. After a slow start, Rajin began to accumulate runs ending the season on over 700 runs (see averages) A superb fielder and athlete rajin has been selected to take charge of all fielding management in the Bangladeshi cricket Board. His wife and son accompanied him to the UK in 2011 and a fellow Test player, Enamul Haque junior was also playing in the league at Guisborough. Sponsored by DSM Cricket (their first test player) Rajin was only too willing to help out where he could. He coached at the club s summer school and was a popular coach on Sunday mornings. Rajin s international record and Darlington record follows on the next page of this report.

The English professional in 2011 Doug Mulholland s league Stats 2011 Doug continued his form with the ball in 2011 and once again passed the 50 wicket mark before the end of the season. He was the player most likely to remove oppositio professionals taking 12 of their scalps over the league season. Interestingly enough 7 of these were left handers. Probably due to Dougs ability to move the ball maway from the left hander. Many of these resulted in slip catches or catches for the wicket keeper. Doug also captained the league representative side to the final of the Presidents Trophy when the NYSD Premier were beaten by the tinghamshirepremier League. A good club man, Doug manages to help keep the team spirit high even when things are not going to plan and his powerplay nights in the bar are a must! A member of the MCC, Doug also turns out a couple of times a year for them too! His mum must be thanked for the occassions she has done our teas this seasons they are unbelievably good. Doug s undying highlight of the season was seeing Bishops pro Phil Holdswoth attempting to impale himself on the stumps during a run out attempt.

The Captain in 2011 Peter Armstrong (left arm spinner aged 27) A first season as captain. Peter has once again passed the 50 wicket mark with his bowling. Peter has the knack of taking that important wicket at the right time. His "double" appeal is now his trade mark and you will not see a more committed player on the field of play. The strong batting line up meant we didnt see Peter s unorthodox style of hitting too much in 2011 but he was always full of encouragement to those batsmen who scored our runs. The 2011 Squad The squad were led by PeterArmstrong (see earlier in report) and employed the services of Doug Mulholland as English professional and rajin Saleh as overseas professional (also see earlier in report for these player s details.) Liam Coates (number 3 batsman and fast bowler aged 20) Liam had an outstanding first half to the season with the bat. he has surpassed all expectations and passed his own personal best for a season in terms of runs scored. this season also saw him take his first 5 wicket haul. Liam has improved over the season with the ball and this season has bowled fewer no balls than in the past. An incredible fielder, Liam has taken some brilliant catches over the year. James Dobson (Early order batsman/wicket keeper aged 18) James has improved on his last couple of seasons with the bat and is developing into a strong middle order batsman. His wicket keeping has been excellent this year. After two seasons off from being a glove man, "Dobbo" returned to keeping duties and improved quickly. Now thoroughly back into the position his victims especially his quick stumpings have proved vital to several results over the year.

Lee Hutton ( opening batsman aged 29) Lee has batted in a variety of positions this year. Always a teams man, his runs have been very important. He has done particularly well in the opening spot. However work commitments have restricted his appearances over the year. Always ready for a joke, Lee has kept smiles on the players faces. Lee s best moment in 2011 was his 96* at Marton which helped us beat the title hopefuls. Lee batted well with Si Lee to win this game. Simon Lee (middle order batsman aged 21)

Zak Harvey (opening batsman aged 21) Zak Harvey Innings outs runs High score average 7 0 128 57 18.29 Alex Deuchar (fast bowler aged 22) Alexachieved every young cricketers dream this season when he played at Lords (the other home of cricket) fro Durham University. When available for Darlington, Alex bowled well as shown in his averages. Injuries, work and university commitments limited Alex s appearances in 2011.

Colin Biglin (middle order batsman aged 33) Jack Vickerman (opening batsman/leg break bowler aged 18) Jack came into the side on merit towards the end of the season after a string of good knocks in the seconds including a maiden century. he acquitted himself well scoring his maiden premier league half century at Marske.
