If you are selected, there are certain personal and financial responsibilities and obligations which you and your parents must assume in order to qualify as a member in good standing. Please read this information carefully with your parents before you decide to try out. In order to tryout, both parent/guardian and student must be present at a mandatory informational meeting on Tuesday, February 12 th at 6:00pm in the MHS Library. Membership on this team is a yearlong commitment and will begin this spring with team officer interviews on Monday, March 18 th from 3:00pm-4:30pm, and a mandatory team/parent meeting & uniform fitting on Thursday, March 21 st from 5:00pm-7:00pm at MHS. Team practice will begin on Tuesday, March 19 th and will continue Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:00pm 5:30pm through the end of school. Additional practices will be scheduled to prepare for UDA camp. There will be a mandatory UDA Convention Camp at the Hilton Hotel in New Orleans June 2 nd 5 th and a fundraiser camp June 17 th 21 st. If you cannot attend UDA camp, please do not try out. You will be dismissed from the team. Starting in August, practice will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:40pm 4:30pm. A suggested jazz technique class will be offered for the Spinnakers on Wednesdays from 3:30pm 5:00pm at Kelli s Kreative Dance in Mandeville. The classes will be offered April 2019 March 2020 (excluding June and July). Monday practices will be added in the fall as competition season approaches, and weekend practices will be scheduled as needed. Weekly ballet class is strongly encouraged for Spinnakers who are interested in being a part of our competition routines. This class may be taken be at the dance studio of their choice. The team will perform at MHS football games, basketball games, pep rallies and at UDA & American All-Star state (January 2020) and national (February 2020) dance competitions. Students will not be able to participate in any sport or extracurricular with a conflicting time schedule. Optional Tryout Clinic: An optional clinic for Spinnaker tryouts will be held on Saturday, February 16 th from 9:00am-12pm in the MHS gym. This clinic is open to anyone interested in trying out for the 2019-2020 team, as well as students wishing to try out in future years.

Although not required, candidates are encouraged to attend this clinic to get a sneak peek on how team practices are run and what will be expected at tryouts. There is a $15 charge to attend this clinic; please make sure to bring payment with you on the day of the clinic. It s encouraged that each Spinnaker candidate come dressed as if they were going to audition. (Payments can be made in the form of cash or checks. Please make checks payable to MHS Spinnakers). Candidate Requirements: 2 Candidates must have a clean discipline record, and a 1.5 grade point average. All candidates trying-out must presently be a student of MHS, or an incoming ninth grader from any MHS feeder school, except for those transferring from other schools. Transferring students need documentation confirming the transfer from the St. Tammany Parish School Board. If selected to be a Spinnaker, the student MUST have a physical signed by a doctor before the team leaves for camp in the summer stating that she is in good physical condition for this type of activity. A candidate must not owe any fines or fees to Mandeville High School, the Spinnakers, or to any club, team or other organization at MHS. Each candidate will receive a copy of the MHS SPINNAKER DANCE TEAM RULES (constitution) which must be signed by the student and parent/guardian during. Dance team members are expected to meet high standards of conduct and academics. CANDIDATES MUST ATTEND ALL DAYS OF THE TRYOUT CLINIC, SUBMIT ALL PAPERWORK ON TIME, AND PAY THE TRYOUT FEE OF $30 TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR TRYOUTS. MAKE CHECKS PAYABLE TO MHS SPINNAKERS. Tryout Apparel: Plain black Leotard, black shorts, hot shorts or skirt, jazz shoes, hair in high ponytail or bun off of face and performance makeup on day of try-outs. Flesh colored tights are optional. **No jewelry, tennis shoes, black soled shoes, hair down or bright colored sports bras** Tryout Evaluations Include: Turns Chaines, Piques, Attitude, Double & Triple Pirouettes, A le secondes (leg second), Coupe Jumps/Leaps Jete, Second Leap, Calypso, Toe Touch, Turning Disc Kicks Straight, Fan, Pitch Misc. Right, Left and Center Splits Judges: Judges are independently hired professionals and will evaluate participants and record their scores. These scores will be added to teacher recommendation scores to calculate total points.

3 Tryout Process: Candidates will be identified by a number given out the first day of the clinic. Judges will score candidates anonymously by their audition number. The top 70% of the team will be comprised solely of judges scores. The remaining 30% of the team will be selected based upon judges scores and how the dancers fit in with the abilities of the top 70%. Candidates will be scored on jazz, pom and hip hop technique, leaps and turns progressions, and a kick sequence. Call backs will be utilized as needed. Once score tabulations are complete, all participants will receive a letter stating the results of the audition. The numbers of those who have made the team will be also posted online by 7pm. There will be a brief welcome meeting immediately following posting of results at an off campus location. Parents and spectators must remain outside until tryouts are concluded. FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY: The estimated financial obligation to be a member of this team is $1,800.00*. This amount covers the cost of all uniforms, camp, and accessories but does not include state & national competition fees due in November. Estimated cost for State & National Competition will be approximately $1,450.00* per girl however, there will be ample opportunity to fundraise throughout the year. The Spinnakers dance team also offers a suggested technique class one day a week at Kelli s Kreative Dance. The cost for this is $330 for the YEAR. This is due in monthly payments made payable to Kelli s Kreative Dance. These forms must be returned in a sealed envelope with the corresponding teacher s signature across the seal. Any forms received via alternate methods will not be accepted, and the score will count as a 0.
