The Panthers split their opening weekend trip falling to Tennessee Tech on Thursday before rallying to beat Jacksonville State on Saturday. At TTU, the home standing Golden Eagles shot 71 percent in the second half to pull away with a ten point win over EIU. At JSU it was the Panthers who shot 70 percent in the second half as the Panthers pulled away for an 11 point road victory to stand at 4-10 overall, 1-1 in the OVC. TSU enters the week at 1-0 in the OVC after winning on Saturday at Southeast Missouri. TSU has been one of the surprise teams this year with a 10-4 record entering the game. McREYNOLDS RED HOT FROM THE FIELD Demetrius McReynolds was red hot for the Panthers on Saturday at Jacksonville State knocking down 10-of-13 shots from the field with 19 of his 21 points coming in the second half. McReynolds has scored in double figures in three straight games and five of the last six contests. He is shooting 50 percent from the field for the season and over the last five games is shooting 61.9 percent from the floor and 50 percent from 3-point range averaging 13.4 points per game in those five games. TESON KNOCKING DOWN 3 S Casey Teson scored in double figures for the third straight game with 14 points at Jacksonville State. Teson was 3-of-6 from 3-point range as he now has seven games this season with three or more made 3-pointers in a game. For the season Teson has knocked down 31 3-pointers which ranks fifth in the OVC for 3-pointers made per game. Spoonhour was previously the head coach at Moberly Area Community College where he coached for three seasons. He is a long time assistant coach at the NCAA Division I level and served as the interim head coach at UNLV to complete the 2004 season posting a 6-4 record and taking the team to the finals of the Mountain West Conference Tournament along with an NIT appearance. In 2001 Spoonhour was named the National Junior College Coach of the Year leading Wabash Valley College to the NJCAA National Championship with a 36-1 record. He is the son of the late legendary coach Charlie Spoonhour. Spoonhour played basketball at Pittsburg State earning his degree in 1994. He was an honorable mention All-Conference selection. He has assistant coaching stops at Central Missouri, Saint Louis, UNLV, Missouri and Texas San Antonio. Spoonhour s career mark is 150-97; 50-69 at the NCAA Division I level. His EIU record is 44-65 with an OVC mark of 23-27. Spoonhour led the program to its first NCAA Division I postseason win on March 17, 2015 with a 97-91 win at Oakland in the CIT. LAST TIME OUT Demetrius McReynolds caught fire in the second half scoring 19 of his 21 points as the Panthers beat Jacksonville State 75-64 after trailing much of the first half. McReynolds finished the game 10-of-13 from the field as his shooting was contagious. EIU shot 70.4 percent in the second half as a team and finished the game shooting 50 percent from the floor. Casey Teson (14) and A.J. Riley (10) also finished in double figures as EIU won its first road game of the season. SCOUTING TENNESSEE STATE Dana Ford is in his second season as the head coach at Tennessee State. Much like Eastern Illinois, TSU has one of the newest line-ups in the country with nine newcomers on the roster. TSU has had a strong opening to the season with a 10-4 record and 1-0 mark in the OVC after beating Southeast Missouri in the opener. Keron DeShields leads TSU at 15.8 points per game with Wayne Martin (13.1 ppg) and Tahjere McCall (11.5 ppg) also averaging in double figures. Martin is averaging a double-double with 10.6 rebounds per game, second in the OVC. SERIES INFORMATION This will be the 49th meeting between Eastern Illinois and Tennessee State in a series that dates back to the late 1950 s. TSU holds a 26-22 all-time series lead but EIU leads the series 19-16 in meetings as OVC members. Johnston has moved into second in the OVC in assists per game this season with 4.7 apg. He has 222 career assists to rank 25th on the EIU career list. He needs six to move into a tie for 23rd with Tyler Laser and Fred Myers. Over the last four games he has 29 assists and seven turnovers. Marshawn Blackmon has given the Panthers a lift off the bench this season with his aggressive play on the offensive glass. Blackmon has 39 rebounds this season with nearly half of them, 18, coming on the offensive end of the floor. He is averaging 4.4 points per game while shooting 60.9 percent from the floor. A.J. Riley returned to double figures for the second time in the last six games with ten points at Jacksonville State. Riley was 3-of-6 from the floor and 3-of-4 from the free throw line. Trae Anderson was hampered by foul trouble for the second straight game at Jacksonville State as he fouled out scoring eight points.
