MINI-CAMP INFORMATION July 9-12 Mini-Camp is four consecutive days of rehearsal in July. In the past, we have spread this out over two weeks and alternated days. This year we are going to switch to one week and consecutive days. Mini-Camp is when we spend a lot of time dealing with the fundamentals of marching and playing in preparation for Band Camp. We do this so we can hit the ground marching once we get to Band Camp and spend our time learning the show rather than learning basics. Mini-Camp hours are 9am-3pm. Be sure to eat breakfast before you arrive. You will need to bring a sack lunch each day for Mini-Camp. Items to bring: Instrument Flag/Equipment Music Socks with comfortable WHITE tennis shoes Water Jug Lunch Hat Sunglasses Sunscreen Chalk (sidewalk chalk) Set Book (small notebook that can fit in your pocket) Pencil 5

BAND CAMP INFORMATION July 23-27 Band Camp is five consecutive days of intense rehearsal set aside each summer for learning the music, choreography, and drill for our fall marching band Show. We hire in specialized staff to help us in learning our show material. Band Camp is absolutely MANDATORY. During the rest of the summer, we are very flexible with absences do to vacations and other excused summer activities. This is the one week out the entire summer where no absences will be excused. In order for us to be as successful as we want, we must have 100% attendance for the entirety of all five days. Band camp hours: Monday 12pm-8pm Be sure to eat lunch before you arrive. Tuesday 12pm-8pm Dinner will be provided each day. Wednesday 12pm-8pm Thursday 12pm-8pm Friday 12pm-6:30pm (Public performance at 6:30pm) Band Camp will take place at Forest Park High School. For band camp, each section needs to wear a specific shirt color. Brass and Woodwinds white Color Guard TBA Drum Line TBA Pit - TBA Items to bring: Instrument Flag/Equipment Music Socks with comfortable WHITE tennis shoes Water Jug Lunch Hat Chalk (sidewalk chalk) Sunglasses Set Book (small notebook that can fit in your pocket) Sunscreen Pencil 6

CONDUCT AND REHEARSAL EXPECTATIONS Promptness and Tardiness One thing we pride ourselves on is starting ON TIME. Showing up promptly for the start time of rehearsal is expected. Showing up late is unacceptable. On time means having all of your equipment and being in your spot at the start time of rehearsal. On time does not mean pulling into the parking lot 2 minutes before the start time of rehearsal. Consider this about being on time: To be early is to be on time, to be on time is to be late, to be late is to be forgotten! Rehearsal Shoes This year, we are asking that all members have comfortable, white tennis shoes (running/walking style shoes) for rehearsal. Please avoid high tops, flip flops, sandals, boots, skate boarding shoes, etc Attitude/Respect All members are expected to have a positive, supportive, and respectful attitude at rehearsal. Keep drama out of rehearsal! If you have a problem, talk to a staff member. You are part of something bigger than yourself. Remember that no matter how much you may like or dislike someone, you all receive the same score in the end. You can t perform the show on your own.you need everyone else on the field with you. Everyone will perform at their best when they are all surrounded with a positive atmosphere. Treat others with respect. Listen to staff and treat all staff with respect. Follow the Golden Rule! Rehearsal Technique Have ALL of your equipment and supplies. Run back to your set spots the more reps we get, the better. Everyone count loudly it never fails.the louder you count, the better you look Practice as though you are performing! 7

Dates will be announced one the fall sports schedule is available. 8

ATTENDANCE POLICY (EFFECTIVE AS OF JUNE 2012) Attendance is the single most important part of every rehearsal. Unlike most other activities, there are no substitutes in band. Remember that missing is not just about you! When you are not there, you are not only affecting yourself, you are affecting everyone else around you everyone suffers. Everyone is counting on you to fulfill your commitment. BE THERE! Excused Absences An excused absence occurs when the student does not attend band practice and has the consent and/or knowledge of a parent for one of the following reasons (A note from a parent must be provided: Personal illness of the student Serious illness in the immediate family Death in the family Wedding of immediate family member School related activity that cannot occur outside of band practice Church related activity that cannot occur outside of band practice Music related activity that cannot occur outside of band practice Other events may be excused and are determined on a case by case basis Unexcused Absences An unexcused absence occurs when a student is absent from band practice without the knowledge and/or consent of a parent or the director and when the absence is not for one of the excused reasons listed above. It is important to note that parental consent or knowledge does not constitute and excused absence unless the reason for the absence falls under one of the excused reasons above. Unexcused absences could include the following: Skipping band practice or a portion of practice Attending work instead of band practice (Even if it is the employers mistake in scheduling the student to work during practice.that would be the fault of the employer, so the band shouldn t have to pay for their mistake) Doctor/Dentist appointments that could be scheduled at another time Going to another activity during band practice that could be done at another time Anything not listed above as excused 1 st Unexcused absence: Student will not march with the band in the next performance (Football game or Contest). However, the student will dress out and stand at attention on the front sideline facing the audience. 2 nd Unexcused absence: Student will not perform with the band for the remainder of the season. The position will be filled by and alternate (if available) or eliminated. Special Circumstances: The director will make the final decisions determining excused or unexcused absences. Special circumstances may need to be evaluated on an individual basis. 9

CONCERT BAND EXPECTATIONS Concert band is the single most important aspect of our program. While marching band is the most visible, the fall season cannot be a success without a strong concert band season. The majority of our concert season, will be spent rehearsing literature that will be performed at the ISSMA Organizational Contest. In order to achieve the level of performance we want, weekly sectionals and evening rehearsals will be required. Weekly Sectionals: Beginning in early-mid February, each section will be required to schedule a one hour sectional each week until organizational contest. Sectionals will be scheduled individually be each section based on when all members are available. Evening Rehearsals: Beginning in early-mid March, all members will be required to attend evening rehearsals. These rehearsals will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays until organizational contest. WINTER PEP BAND EXPECTATIONS The high school band plays at all home boys varsity basketball games. Attendance is required for all members at each home game. 10

GRADING POLICY Because of the changing performance demands throughout our school year, each nine weeks will be graded differently. For instance, attendance will be graded more heavily during marching season, while time sheets will make up the majority of your grade during concert season. Grading may be made up of a combination of the following Attendance at rehearsals Attendance at performances Playing quizzes and tests Memorization checks Time sheets Written assignments, quizzes, and tests Attitude/Effort SUMMER BAND AS A PE CREDIT Marching band is an extremely physical activity that requires members to demonstrate high levels of balance, coordination, agility, and endurance. Therefore, band can be counted as a members 2 nd PE credit. Please note that band can only count as a members 2 nd PE credit. A member s 1 st PE credit must come from an actual PE class. 11

FUNDRAISING EXPECTATIONS Consider this. Regardless of what part of our program you belong to (brass, woodwind, percussion, or color guard), everyone is supported by the same booster organization and is considered a BAND MEMBER. With that in mind, it takes a considerable amount of funding for us to have the type of highly competitive and successful organization we want. We will have several fundraisers throughout the year. All BAND MEMBERS will be expected to take part in all fundraisers. Keep in mind that we are all in this together and we all need to pull our own weight. Whether it is on the field, on the stage, or in fundraising, it is not fair or right to let others carry you along. WE MUST ALL DO OUR PART! 12
