Jan. 8, 2014 7:00 PM Quick Hits... La Salle mounted a 15-2 run out of the first media timeout and led the rest of the way in a 65-50 rout of George Mason on the road on Saturday. Leeza Burdgess, this week s Big 5 Player of the Week, recorded her third double-double in four games with 10 points and 16 rebounds. The Explorers have now won four out of their last five, moving to.500 for the first time since they were 9-9 after their Jan. 14, 2012, win over Xavier. The Explorers rank third in the A-10 in scoring defense, limiting opponents to 60.5 ppg. With the win over Rhody, the Explorers improved to 3-1 in Atlantic 10 openers under Head Coach Jeff Williams. Tonight s game is the first home game since a Dec. 15, 2013, loss to Villanova. Alicia Cropper (1st; 36.9 min/game) and Khristin Lee (1st; 2.8 spg) rank first in the Atlantic 10 in minutes and steals, respectively; Full A-10 individual rankings inside. Three players (Alston, Burdgess, Lee) have recorded double-doubles this season. Three of La Salle s starters (Burdgess, Cropper, Lee) have a combined six years of BCS starting experience. Wednesday marks just the second-ever meeting of La Salle and VCU, with the Rams taking last year s game 69-50 in Richmond. In Williams' third year on 20th and Olney, two players under his watch earned Philadelphia Big 5 honors. Brittany Wilson was a First Teamer and also the city's scoring champion, averaging 18.3 ppg, and Shanel Harrison earned Second Team honors. He brought the Explorers to back-to-back Atlantic 10 Tournament berths in 2011 and 2012, advancing to the second round in 2012. His 2011-12 squad went.500 in A-10 play, knocking off Xavier for the first time in eight years and then toppling the Musketeers again in the A-10 tournament. The Explorers put together a six-game win streak, the best since 2005-06, and started league play 3-0 for the first time since 1996-97. Under his tutelage, Wilson picked up All-Big 5 First Team and Atlantic 10 Third Team honors and Jada Payne was named Atlantic 10 All- Rookie. In the first year of Williams tenure, the Explorers went 6-8 in the conference and qualified for the Atlantic 10 Tournament. Individual accomplishments included senior Ashley Gale being named to the Atlantic 10 Second Team and All- Defensive Team, while earning the league's 'Most Improved Player' award, and also earned All-Big 5 First Team honors. Jess Koci earned Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team honors after being one of the league's top rebounders as a freshman. Williams spent the prior seven seasons at the University of Pittsburgh, including the last four as the Associate Head Coach. Williams helped guide the Panthers to postseason appearances in the past five seasons, including three straight NCAA Tournament trips with Sweet Sixteen showings in 2008 and 2009. He was formally introduced at a press conference on Wednesday, March 23, 2010 and became the program's eighth head coach. Williams has nearly 20 years of college coaching experience, including six as a women's basketball coach at Howard (1995-2000), Georgia Tech (2001-03) and Pittsburgh (2003-10). He recruited or coached six players who reached the WNBA, including Pitt All-American Shavonte Zellous, who was named to the WNBA all-rookie team in 2009. Three of his recruiting classes have been ranked in the top 15 nationally and his teams have reached seven NCAA and three WNIT Tournaments. Under the tutelage of head coach Agnus Berenato, Williams helped Pittsburgh to unprecedented success during his seven-year tenure. Williams recruited and signed a pair of players--zellous and Philadelphia's Marcedes Walker (University City HS)--who would provide the most successful run in the program's history. Two years after a six-win first season, the staff led the Panthers to a then school-record 22 wins and WNIT appearance in 2005-06. In 2006-07, the Panthers broke the school record for wins (24) and advanced to their first NCAA Tournament appearance in program history. The success rewarded Pittsburgh with its first national ranking in the Associated Press poll in nearly 20 years. Walker earned All-Region honors for the second straight year in 2007-08, leading Pitt to its first NCAA Sweet Sixteen and tying the school record with 24 wins. The team also defeated a top 10 opponent for the first time in program history and captured four wins over top 15 teams that season. Walker, who Williams worked with directly when he coached the post players, became the second player in program history to accumulate over 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds. One season later, the Panthers returned to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen and won 25 games, marking the fourth straight year the team had tied or broken the school record. Pitt was ranked #14 in the final AP ranking, its highest in program history. Zellous was named an AP All-American and was the school's first WNBA draft pick, going #11 overall to the Detroit Shock. This past season, Pitt reached the WNIT, making it a program-record five straight postseason appearances. Williams first worked with Berenato at Georgia Tech. There he helped lead the Yellow Jackets to their second-ever NCAA trip in 2003 after a WNIT appearance in 2002. He coached a pair of future WNBA players at Georgia Tech--Kasha Terry and Sonya Mallory. For two straight seasons, he helped bring in a nationally ranked recruiting class, including two Street & Smith's All-America honorees. Both classes were ranked in the top 15 nationally. He spent the five previous seasons at Howard, where he led the Bison to four league titles and three NCAA Tournament appearances as the associate head coach. His 1997-98 recruiting class was ranked #12 nationally. Williams recruited Andrea Gardner, who led the nation in rebounding in 2000, and coached the school's first two WNBA players - Gardner and Denique Graves, from Philadelphia's University City High School. Williams also has professional coaching experience, coaching the Atlanta Justice of the National Women's Basketball League (NWBL) in 2000-01, leading the team to the league title. A 1987 graduate of Howard with a degree in therapeutic recreation, Williams also was an assistant coach for the men's teams at George Mason (1989-93) and South Carolina State (1987-89). 2

All-Time Series The Explorers and Rams met for the first time last season when VCU joined the Atlantic 10. The Rams took that inaugural meeting, 69-50, in Richmond behind a quartet of players with 11 points (Alaeze, Pellechio, Parks, Koivunen). Former Explorer Shanel Harrison led all players with a double-double of 20 points and 10 rebounds. Weekly Honors Leeza Burdgess earned her first Big 5 Player of the Week honor after averaging 13.0 ppg and 13.3 rpg in three games last week (Binghamton, Rhode Island, George Mason). The graduate student pulled down a career-best 19 rebounds against Binghamton in the final of the Blue Sky Classic, and followed up with a 16-rebound performance at George Mason. Travel Adventures The Explorers returned to campus late Saturday night after not seeing campus or home since Dec. 28, when they departed for Dartmouth s Blue Sky Classic. By the time they returned to campus after the George Mason game, they had been on the road for eight consecutive days spanning the new year. They played at Dartmouth on 12/29 and 12/30 and went straight to Rhode Island for the 1/2 contest. Things got fun when the flight from Rhode Island was canceled due to the snowstorm, and the team traveled 10 hours by bus on Friday to make it to Fairfax. Tonight s contest against VCU marks the first home game since Dec. 15, when the Explorers hosted Big 5 rival Villanova. Crashing the Boards Leeza Burdgess exploded for a career-high 19 rebounds in the Explorers 57-56 loss to Binghamton on Dec. 30 in the Blue Sky Classic at Dartmouth. Burdgess shattered her previous career high of 16, set two years ago at Cincinnati while she was in a Pittsburgh uniform. Seeing Double Burdgess recorded back-to-back double-doubles at the Dartmouth tournament. She scored 12 points and pulled down 10 boards in the Explorers 54-43 win over the host Big Green, before her 14 point/19 rebound performance against the Bearcats. All-Tournament Selections The Explorers played in back-to-back tournaments surrounding the Christmas holiday, including the Gator Holiday Classic at the University of Florida and the Blue Sky Classic at Dartmouth. Micahya Owens earned All-Tournament Team honors at Florida, while Burdgess was given the All-Tourney nod at Dartmouth. La Salle s Record When... Starting Lineup Is... La Salle went 2-2 in the two tournaments, splitting games at each. Atlantic 10 Opener The Explorers open their 19th season in the Atlantic 10 Conference. They are 2-1 in openers under Jeff Williams, who is in his fourth season at the helm, and are 8-10 in openers since joining the league in the 1995-96 season. Newly Minted Lisa Mintzer, who was sidelined with a preseason injury, returned to action at the Gator Holiday Classic to make her collegiate debut against FIU on Dec. 20. She scored five points and pulled down three rebounds while committing no turnovers in 23 minutes. The 6 4 center/forward then earned her first collegiate start one game later against Tennessee State, scoring six points, snagging five rebounds and recording one blocked shot in 19 minutes. Free Throw Improvement The Explorers have gone 72.5% from the free throw line in the last three games, highlighted by an 11-for-12 performance against Villanova (Dec. 15) and a 25-for-32 performance against Tennessee State (Dec. 21). In contrast, the squad went 60.7% at the line in the first seven games of the season. Alston Makes a Splash Rookie Jasmine Alston averaged 8.6 ppg, 7.2 rpg, 2.2 spg and 2.8 apg over five games from Nov. 24 (at Fairfield) to Dec. 15 (vs. Villanova), compared to 2.0 ppg in her first three. In her first two collegiate starts, she played all 40 minutes of each while averaging 12.5 ppg and 8.0 rpg. She recorded her first career double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds in a setback to Villanova (12/15). An Apple A Day... On Dec. 20, all 11 Explorers suited up and played for the first time this season. Khristin Lee returned from missing two games due to injury and rookie Lisa Mintzer made her collegiate debut after being declared healthy from a preseason injury. Career Highs For Khristin Lee Grad student Khristin Lee (junior by eligibility) set new career marks in both scoring and rebounding when she drained 17 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for her first career double-double. Her previous career highs came while she was at Alabama, including 13 points vs. Providence on Nov. 27, 2010, and eight rebounds vs. South Carolina on Feb. 19, 2012. Double-Double Action Three Explorers have recorded double-doubles this season. Leeza Burdgess scored 10 points and added 11 rebounds in a 59-57 setback at Rutgers (11/17), while Khristin Lee drained 17 points and pulled down 10 boards in a 64-59 loss at Fairfield (11/25). Jasmine Alston added her first with 16 points and 10 rebounds in an 83-47 loss to Villanova (12/15). Owens Leads the Pack Freshman Micahya Owens is proving herself early, hanging on to the team scoring lead with 13.1 ppg. She has hit double figures in eight of the first 10 games in her young career. Owens is no stranger to the basket, scoring just shy of 2,000 points in her four years at Willingboro High School in New Jersey, the same high school as Washington Mystics (WNBA) star and former All-American Crystal Langhorne (Maryland). New Faces The 2013-14 Explorer squad sports a brand new look this year, welcoming a new starting five lineup, three eligible transfers and four freshmen. strong preseason to the presence of strong leadership in the three transfers - Leeza Burdgess, Alicia Cropper, and Khristin Lee. All three have a combined six years of starting experience at BCS schools, Burdgess at Pitt, Cropper at Providence and Lee at Alabama. We re very excited about this year, practice has been going great, Williams said at the Atlantic 10 Media Day. Our transfer kids have been providing tremendous leadership. Practice has been very intense, upbeat, [and] our team chemistry has been great so I m very excited about this year. March 7, semifinals on March 8, and concluding with the title game on March 9. GoExplorers.TV All La Salle women s basketball games will be streamed live on La Salle s video portal at www.goexplorers.com. Let s Be Friends All three transfers were one-time opponents on the court. Leeza Burdgess (Pittsburgh) and Alicia Cropper (Providence) were BIG EAST foes, and Cropper and Khristin Lee (Alabama) even met on the hardwood. Lee set her previous career-high scoring with 13 points in Alabama s 82-80 triple-overtime win over Cropper s Providence squad on Nov. 27, 2010. Burdgess and Cropper were both featured in the starting lineup of the Pittsburgh/Providence meeting on Jan. 28, 2012, where Cropper helped lead the Friars to a 66-50 win with eight points and four rebounds. To add one more to the list? Cropper, Burdgess and Assistant Coach Shayla Scott all saw time on the court in the Pitt/Providence game on Feb. 15, 2011. Scott was a starter for Pitt in that contest; Burdgess and Cropper were freshmen. Foul Folly There are new, more stringent foul rules in play for the 2013-14 season across the NCAA, which will make depth that much more important as the game will likely see many more foul calls than in the past. Coach Williams is expecting to use a nine- or 10-player rotation, partly as a result. Preseason Pollsters The Explorers were predicted to finish 10th in the 13-team Atlantic 10 this season, ahead of George Mason, Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Dayton was selected as the preseason favorite followed by defending league champion Saint Joseph s. O Captain, My Captain Leeza Burdgess, Alicia Cropper and Khristin Lee will serve as team captains for the 2013-14 season. 2014 Atlantic 10 Championship The Atlantic 10 reached a three-year agreement with the City of Richmond to hold the Atlantic 10 Women s Basketball Championship at the Richmond Coliseum, starting with the 2014 tournament. This also marks the first year that every team in the league will participate in the tournament, which previously took the top 12 finishers in the league standings. The tournament will open on March 5 with a play-in game, followed by the first round on March 6, quarterfinals on 6
