Game Notes 2 HEAD COACH SUNNY GOLLOWAY Sunny Golloway has led the Sooners to six NCAA Regional finals, 326 victories and a top 25 ranking in each of his seven years at the helm of the OU program. The Sooners have hosted three NCAA Regionals under Golloway while appearing in the program s only Super Regional appearances (2006, 2010 and 2012) and making it back to the College World Series in 2010 for the first time since 1995. The Sooners posted the program s fourth straight 40-win regular season in 2012, a first since 1989, and finished fourth in the Big 12 standings while making the program s fifth straight NCAA postseason appearance (35th overall). OU finished the 2012 campaign ranked as high as No. 13 in the nation after falling to South Carolina in the NCAA Columbia Super Regional. The 2011 season ended at 41-19 and with Michael Rocha (second team) and Dillon Overton (freshman) collecting All-America honors, while a programbest 11 players were selected in the Major League Baseball Draft in June. In 2010, the Sooners made the program s 10th appearance in the College World Series and first since 1995. The path started after OU hosted an NCAA Regional for the second straight year and advanced to the program s second Super Regional appearance. The series win over then-no. 1 Virginia propelled back to the final season at Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha, Neb. OU finished 2010 with a No. 5 national ranking and a 50-18 overall record, marking the fifth season in program history with 50 or more wins. Fifteen of those wins came in Big 12 play as OU finished in second place in the standings for the second straight year. In addition, Garrett Buechele (first team) and Max White (freshman) were named All-Americans. Oberste is coming off of a 30-game hit streak which ended in the first game of the Texas series, but not before setting a Big 12 and OU record. Oberste broke the OU program record with his 28th-straight game, hitting a home run in the first game of the series against Kansas to break the previous mark set by Marty Neff in 1991. Oberste added leadoff hitting to his repertoire after head coach Sunny Golloway shuffled his batting order ahead of a threegame series with New Orleans. Oberste moved up from the clean-up spot and led the team with seven runs scored. Oberste batted 8-for-14 (.571) with a.600 on-base percentage as leadoff with two doubles, a triple and a home run in the series. ALL-AMERICAN ACES OU sports a pair of 2013 preseason All-American aces in its weekend rotation in junior righty Jonathan Gray and junior southpaw Dillon Overton. Gray, who is 7-1, leads the starting rotation with a 1.09 ERA and a Big 12-leading 91 strikeouts over 74.1 innings of work. The junior ranks third in the nation in strikeouts (91), third in WHIP (0.71) and sixth in hits allowed per nine innings (4.84). Overton is 8-2 with a 2.52 ERA and has fanned 66 against just 16 walks over 71.1 innings. Overton went eight innings with eight strikeouts for the Sooners Saturday, April 13, to earn the win at Baylor. The junior walked just two and gave up only one earned run for his seventh victory, the most of any pitcher in the Big 12. Overton also is second in the league behind teammate Jonathan Gray with 66 strikeouts, helping OU maintain its place atop the Big 12 standings. Gray has won three Big 12 Pitcher of the Week honors, becoming the 13th pitcher to earn three or more Big 12 Pitcher of the Week honors in a single season and the first Sooner to do so. The junior from Chandler, Okla., tied a career high with 12 strikeouts against Kansas to earn the honor, going all nine innings in a 12-1 win in the series opener. Gray took a no-hitter into the seventh inning, ultimately allowing just two hits, one run and no walks. Gray was also named Big 12 Pitcher of the Week after Oklahoma rode his arm to a 4-0 victory at then-no. 12-ranked UCLA three weeks ago in Los Angeles. Gray put together a masterful performance on the mound for OU, fanning eight over seven scoreless frames. The Sooners posted their first shutout since blanking Baylor, 1-0, in 10 innings on May 12, 2012. He followed that effort up by fanning a career-high 12 in a complete-game effort to push OU to a 1-0 victory two weeks ago over Northwestern State. Gray, who tossed his first complete-game shutout in the triumph over the Demons, was named Big 12 Pitcher of the Week for the second week in a row. WHITE S (BETTER THAN) ALL RIGHT Senior outfielder/infielder Max White has made his presence felt for the Sooners, posting a.327 batting average, 52 hits, 25 RBIs and 35 runs, all good for second-most on the team. He smacked a leadoff base hit back up the middle, then scored on a passed ball in the bottom of the 12th inning to push the Sooners past TCU, 3-2, in that series opener. White moved to the clean-up spot for OU s three-game series versus New Orleans and hit 7-for-11 (.636) with four extra-base hits, on walk, four RBIs and four runs scored. Carnes Passes Audition Junior lefthander Ethan Carnes lasted the distance with a season-high seven innings pitched in a 14-3 run-rule of New Orleans Sunday, April 21. Carnes took just his second start of the season as the Sooners searched for the third man in their weekend rotation. Carnes (2-1) rebounded from an early deficit to pick up the win. After a four-hit, three-run first, Carnes shut out the Privateeres, allowing just two hits and striking out five of the final 20 batters he faced. Carpenter Coping with Tragedy Freshman infielder Kolbey Carpenter returns from a week-long absence following the devastating fertilizer plant explosion in his hometown of West, Texas. Said OU coach Sunny Golloway: As far as Kolbey goes, he s talked to his immediate family and they re safe. His best friend lost his father and there s some other people that he s very close to. Because it affects Kolbey, it affects us. We just need to keep him in our thoughts and our prayers and I m sure our fans understand that if he s not back this weekend, he s where he needs to be. When he does come back, I m sure our fans are going to give him tremendous support just like band of brothers that are sitting behind me. I wish we were closer just to do something as a team to help out... just to let West, Texas, know that the Oklahoma Sooners are thinking about them. With the events of this week, it s put into perspective. We re not asked to go into a laboratory and find a cure for cancer. It s baseball. It s a game. MAYFIELD MAGIC Senior infielder Jack Mayfield provided some memorable moments at the plate early this season for the Sooners in 2013. Mayfield lifted a sacrifice fly to right field in the bottom of the ninth inning to push Oklahoma to a 3-2 walk-off triumph over New Mexico State on March 13. He also crushed a three-run home run over the left field wall in the bottom of the eighth inning to push OU to its ninth straight win to open the 2013 season over New Mexico on March 24. He was named MVP of the weekend classic for his efforts.
