ENTRY LEVEL PROGRAMS: EXPLORE Entry level programs are one day programs that allow a student to try a program and be introduced to interesting natural areas in Red Wing. EXPLORE THE CANNON BOTTOMS Age minimum: 6 th grade Fee: $20.00 This one day adventure is an amazing opportunity to get out and explore an area right out our back door. The Cannon Bottoms area is over 2700 acres of wilderness and the winter time is one of the best times to be out in it. We will look for various signs of animal life, explore beaver lodges and simply enjoy the great outdoors in the winter. s (choose one): Group 1 Group 2 December 9 December 16 9:00-3:00 9:00-3:00 CORE PROGRAMS PIONEERING I _BRING A FRIEND! Fee: $45.00 Live like those who first arrived in Minnesota by taking on the pioneering life. You will stay in a log cabin built by students who came before you. As you learn the survival skills of a pioneer, you will split wood, cook over a fire, maintain the trails and experience the luxury of a sauna. CROSS COUNTRY SKIING I Age minimum: 6 th Grade Fee: $45.00 From cross country skiing techniques to dressing properly for the cold, this program will prepare you to explore the woods in the spectacular season of winter. Ski local trails, see tracks and signs of wildlife and finish up with a moonlight ski. ELC will provide equipment. Pick a group. CORE PROGRAMS CROSS COUNTRY SKIING II Age minimum: 7th Grade Prerequisites: Cross Country Skiing I (no prerequisite for 8 th graders and above) Fee: $100.00 Time to head to the North Shore. There we will ski the local rivers and trails, cook delicious meals, and play games in the cozy ELC cabin. Pick a group Activity Group 1 Group 2 Orientation/Skills: January 16 3:30-6:30 pm February 1 5-8 Moonlight ski Trip: Leave Return Wrap-up Potluck with Participants and Parents January 18 12:00 pm January 21 4:00 pm January 24 6:00-7:30 pm February 8 3:30- February 11 6:00 pm February 19 6-7:30 pm CROSS COUNTRY SKIING LEVEL III Fee: $175 Prerequisites: Cross Country Skiing II This program features five days of ski touring in the north woods of Minnesota. Participants will stay at the Two Harbors cabin! WINTER SURVIVAL I Age minimum: 7th Grade Fee: $45.00 Learn the basics of winter camping, including: Fire building skills and outdoor cookery. Ice crossing and basic ice rescue. Animal track identification. Prevention and treatment of hypothermia and frostbite. We will camp where weather and snow conditions permit. WINTER SURVIVAL II Age minimum: 8th Grade Prerequisite: Winter Camping I Fee: $100.00 Three days of winter camping, cross country skiing and ice fishing. Travel on cross country skis and build snow shelters. Learn and practice skills necessary for safe and enjoyable winter exploration. We ll go to the Porcupine Wilderness Area near Drummand, WI. CORE PROGRAMS Orientation/skills: 3:30-5:00 January 16 Trip: Leave 9:00 am Return: 4:00 pm January 19 January 21 Wrap up: 6:00-7:30 January 30 WHITEWATER KAYAKING I Minimum Age: 7 th Grade Fee: $25.00 Come learn the basics of whitewater kayaking in the YMCA pool. We ll work on paddle strokes, balance, and rolling techniques. At the end of the day we ll play water polo in our kayaks. Activity / Time Group 1 Group 2 Skills: 7:00 pm 8:30 pm December 12 December 19 Skills: 7:00 pm 8:30 pm December 13 December 20 Skills: 7:00 pm 8:30 pm December 14 December 21 ELECTIVES WINTER CAMPING- ICE FISHING EXTRAVAGANSA Minimum Age: 8 th grade Fee: $175 Come join us for five days of winter camping out of a Wall tent, and Ice fishing some of the lakes of northern Minnesota. We will be fishing, cooking, and skiing, right out on the ice, and exploring the best of what's to offer. *School Day Orientation/skills: 3:30-5:30 February 26 Trip: Leave 8:00 am -6:00 pm March 3-7 Wrap up: 6:00-7:30 pm March 15 ICE CLIMBING RED WING Minimum Age: 8 th Grade Prerequisite: None Fee: $20.00 Come learn the basics of ice climbing in the backyard of Ed Ward and Heather Nagel. They are farming ice to climb. No experience or equipment needed.-just the desire and a little physical fortitude. Pick a group: Time Group 1 Group 2 Climbing : 3:30-7:30 pm February 6 March 1 YOUNG WOMEN IN THE WOODS: DOGSLEDDING AT CAMP MENOGYN Minimum Age: 8 th grade Fee: $ 275.00 Spend five days with awesome women exploring northern Minnesota, dogsledding the local trails, and snowshoeing to a frozen waterfall. We will stay at a warm cabin at YMCA Camp Menogyn with meals provided and a sauna in the backyard. This is open to all young women 8 th 12 th grade encourage a friend to try out ELC! Orientation/skills: 3:30-5:00 pm February 26 Trip: Leave 8:00 am- 6:00 pm March 3-7 Wrap up: 6:00-7:30 pm March 13 NORTH SHORE ICE CLIMBING Fee: $100.00 Minimum Age: 8 th Grade Students will go up to the Two Harbors cabin and climb the Baptism, Cascade and Manitou Rivers. You will learning the skills and safety necessary to climb ice. Activity/ Time: : Orientation: 3:30-7:30 December 30 Trip: Leave: 3:30 Return: 6:00 January 5 January 8 Wrap up: 6:00-7:30 January 18

ELECTIVES WINTER MULTISPORT Minimum Age: 8 th grade Fee: $100 Head to the North Shore for four days of down hill skiing, cross country skiing, ice climbing, and more. We will base camp out of the beautiful Two Harbors cabin, playing night games, exploring the area, cooking meals and enjoying the winterland. Down Hill skiing at Lutsen Ski Hill, cross country skiing rivers and Pincusion in Grand Marais, And ice climbing the frozen seepages along the rivers of the north shore. Each student will need to have their own downhill ski or snowboard gear or rent and buy their lift ticket for the day, all other gear will be provided. Activity / Time Ski Orientation 4:30-7:00 pm February 20 Trip Leave 3:30 Return 6:00 February 22 February 25 YOUNG WOMEN IN THEWOODS: SLEDDING AT FRONTENAC Fee: $10 We re going sledding! Enjoy and evening with the ladies at Frontenac Sledding hill, the best slope around. Bring a sled, invite a friend, and join us on the snow. 3:30-6:00 pm December 18 KNIFE CONSTRUCTION Fee: $50-$75 will vary depending upon knife chosen Participants will learn about knife designs, types of steel used in knife construction, and the history behind those designs. They will select the knife of their choice and design a custom handle. Activity ICE FISHING Fee: $20 Participants 16 years of age or older need an angling license. This program will introduce participants to the various techniques of ice fishing in the local backwaters. Time : 9:00 am-3:00 pm February 16 Orientation: 3:30-5:00 December 1 Skills: 3:30-6:00 December 18 Skills: 3:30-6:00 December 19 Skills: 3:30-6:00 December 20 INDOOR CLIMBING Minimum Age: 8 th grade Fee: $40 When the rock is cold and icy, try out a whole different form of rock climbing. Come check out Heather Nagel s bouldering garage. We ll spend a couple evenings bouldering in Red Wing, and we ll end with a trip to Roca Climbing in Rochester. Bouldering: 6:30-8:00 pm February 21 Bouldering 6:30-8:00pm February 26 Roca Indoor Climbing: 3:30-8:00 pm February 28 MOONLIGHT CROSS COUNTRY SKIING Prerequisite: Cross Country Skiing I (8 th grade no prerequisite) Fee: $10 This is an amazing opportunity to ski by only the light of the moon! We will explore a local area and cook dinner over an open fire. A perfect winter experience! Time : 5:00-8:30 January 31 st SNOWSHOE CONSTRUCTION Fee: $75 Open house format: The project with take 18 hours total. Participants do not need to attend all of the hours below. Orientation is required Do you hate being trapped inside the house on winter days because the snow is too deep? Well, come out and build your own snowshoes. Snowshoes help you conserve energy and provide a relaxed time of outdoor exercise and enjoyment with friends or by yourself. We will be using a kit with prebent frames ; however, you will need to do the most important part of lacing. YOUNG EXPLORERS LONG POINT EXPLORATION Come and explore Long Point on Lake Pepin. Bring a supper to cook over a open fire. Spend time tracking and exploring our new winter surrounding. YOUNG EXPLORERS SLEDDING Young Explorers are invited to spend an afternoon playing winter games and sledding at our ELC cabin or Frontenac State Park. You will learn about various crystal shapes, how snow is used for shelter and even how it can be used for food. So pull on your hat and gloves and join us for an adventure that will be snow much fun! From signs of winter and animal tracks to your favorite winter drink, we ll cover it all. Need to bring: water, snack, small backpack, comfortable walking shoes/boots, dress in layers for the weather. Meet and Pick up at Hok Si La park. Pick a group: Group 1 Group 2 January 6 January 6 10-12 12:30-2:30 TINY TREES SNOWFLAKE STUDY We will learn about how snowflakes form and the types of shapes that snowflakes are composed of. We will practice being scientists by using o observational and comparison skills. By the end, everyone will be able to identify snowflake types based upon their shape. Need to bring: water, snack, dress in layers for the weather Meet and Pick up at Hok Si La park. Pick a group: Group 1 Group 2 January 20 January 20 10-12 12:30-2:30 TINY TREES BIRD FEED DECORATING Birds need a holiday too! Make a bird seed ornament and garland to decorate a tree for our feathered friends. All materials provided. Need to bring: water, snack, and a plastic bag to bring your goodies home.
