The Minutemen are riding a three-game unbeaten streak after a season-opening 2-1 overtime loss at No. 13/7 Clarkson on October 12. Since then, UMass has defeated No. 12/16 St. Lawrence (3-1), tied UMass Lowell (2-2 ot) and defeated Connecticut (4-3). In their win against Connecticut on October 19, the Minutemen broke a 2-2 deadlock at 2:55 of the third period and Shawn Saunders made the score, 4-2, at 6:20 as they held on for the win. Paul Dainton made 20 saves, including 10 in the third period to earn his first career win. James Marcou leads the team in scoring with four points (one goal, three assists), while Cory Quirk (1 goal, two assists) and P.J. Fenton (three assists) are tied for second with three points each. RECAP OF LAST WEEKEND S GAMES... Providence College posted a 0-2 record last week. The Friars were defeated, 3-2, by Northeastern in overtime on Friday, October 19. PC held leads of 1-0 and 2-1, as juniors Matt Taormina (Washington Township, Mich.) and Kyle Laughlin (Gambrills, Md.) each collected their first goal of the season. However, the Huskies tied the game late in the third period and scored the game winner 44 seconds into the extra session. Senior goalie Tyler Sims (Fort Wayne, Ind.) finished with 29 saves. The following night, PC played its home opener and fell, 6-4, to Holy Cross. The Friars trailed, 2-0, after one period but Laughlin and freshman Eric Baier (North Kingstown, R.I.) each scored power-play goals to even the score in a back-and-forth second period. Senior Jon Rheault (Deering, N.H.) added his first goal of the season, while Laughlin tallied his second of the night in the second period to tie the game, 4-4. However, Holy Cross added two goals in the final 20 minutes to earn the win. Laughlin finished with two goals and one assist, while Rheault had one goal and one assist for the Friars, who outshot the Crusaders, 35-20. SECOND PERIOD SUCCESS... The Friars have scored seven goals this season with six of them coming in the second period. Most recently, PC scored four times in the second period of a 6-4 loss against Holy Cross. The last time the Friars scored four goals in one period was on December 22, 2005 as PC lit the lamp four times in the first period en route to a 7-1 triumph over 11th-ranked Colgate in the first round of the Providence College Holiday Classic at Schneider Arena. LAUGHLIN SCORES TWICE... Junior Kyle Laughlin (Gambrills, Md.) scored twice in a PC s home opener against Holy Cross. It marked the second time in his career that Laughlin has scored two goals in a game. Laughlin also had two goals on March 4, 2006 against Merrimack. In addition, Laughlin finished with three points, marking a career high. FRIARS AGAINST RANKED OPPONENTS... The Friars have played against two ranked teams (No. 12/16 St. Lawrence and No. 13/7 Clarkson) this season and have a 0-2 mark. Last season, the Friars posted a 4-14-1 against ranked opponents, including wins over No. 3 Boston College (5-3 on 10/31/06) and No. 3 New Hampshire (7-1 on 2/24/07). MONARCHS REIGN... This season s Friar squad features seven athletes, including four freshmen, who played junior hockey for the New Hampshire Monarchs. Seniors Marc Bastarache (Lynn, Mass.), Jon Rheault (Deering, N.H.), sophomore Ryan Simpson (Bow, N.H.) as well as freshmen Eric Baier (North Kingstown, R.I.), Matt Germain (Rockland, Mass.), Austin Mayer (Providence, R.I.) and Ian O Connor (Londonderry, N.H.) all played for the Monarchs. O Connor, Mayer and Germain have played together on the fourth line in the first four games this season and have seen significant ice time, while Baier has played on the third defensive pair. OCEAN STATE CONNECTION... The 2007-08 men s hockey team has a strong contingent of Rhode Islanders. In addition to six players, Head Coach Tim Army (East Providence) and Assistant Coach David Berard (Coventry) also hail from the Ocean State. The Rhode Islanders on this season s team are: junior Cody Wild (North Providence), sophomores David Cavanagh, John Cavanagh (Warwick), and Matt Tommasiello (Cranston) as well as freshmen Eric Baier (North Kingstown) and Austin Mayer (Providence). HEAD COACH TIM ARMY... Tim Army is in his third season with the Friars. Army returned to his alma mater to take over the reigns of the PC hockey program on June 17, 2005 after spending three seasons with the Portland Pirates of the AHL. A 1985 graduate of the College and an East Providence native, Army became the 11th coach in the history of the program. He is the first PC alumnus to coach the team since his former coach Lou Lamoriello guided the Friars (1968-83). He also is the first former Hockey East player to be a head coach in the league. In his first season, Army led the team to a 17-16-3 overall record, including a 14-10-3 mark in Hockey East action. The 17 wins were the most by a Friar squad since 2002-03. In addition, the Friars, who were picked to finish eighth in the preseason coaches poll, recorded 14 conference victories and finished fifth in the league. The 14 Hockey East wins were one shy of tying a school record. Prior to coaching at Portland, Army spent nine seasons as an assistant coach in the NHL for two different teams. He worked for four seasons as an assistant for Friar great Ron Wilson with the Anaheim Mighty Ducks (1993-97) and five years under Wilson with the Washington Capitals (1997-02). While in Anaheim, Army was part of the 1996-97 team that earned the franchise s first ever playoff berth and advanced to the second round, where the Mighty Ducks fell to the eventual Stanley Cup Champion Detroit Red Wings. Army helped lead the squad to the 1998 Stanley Cup Finals, the team s only appearance in the finals. NHL TIES... Three members of this season s PC squad have relatives who played or coached in the NHL. Trevor Ludwig s father, Craig, played in the NHL for 15 years and finished his career with the Dallas Stars in 1999... Tyler Sims father, Al, played in the NHL for 10 seasons and is the former Head Coach of the San Jose Sharks... Kyle Laughlin s father, Craig, played in the NHL for nine years, including six seasons with the Washington Capitals. FRIARS DRAFTED BY THE NHL... This season s Providence College team features six players who were selected in the NHL Entry Draft. Senior defenseman Trevor Ludwig (Grapevine, Texas) was a 2004 sixth-round selection, 183rd overall by the Dallas Stars. Junior Pierce Norton (South Boston, Mass.) was a 2004 ninth-round pick, 285th overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs. Sophomore Mark Fayne (Bourne, Mass.) was chosen in the fifth round, 155th overall by the New Jersey Devils in the 2005 draft. In 2006, PC had two players selected in the fifth round. Junior Cody Wild (North Providence, R.I.) was the 140th overall selection, while senior Jon

Rheault (Deering, N.H.) was the 145th pick. Freshman Joe Lavin (Shewsbury, Mass.) was selected in the fifth round (126th overall) in the 2007 Draft.
