2003 Season Outlook 2003 Sacred Heart Men s Lacrosse The 2003 version of the Sacred Heart men s lacrosse will rely on experience with eight starters and 25 letterwinners returning as the Pioneers look poised to make an impact in the Colonial Athletic Association this season. SHU is coming off a 6-8 season a year ago and a 1-5, sixth-place finish in the CAA. We had a very solid fall and our seniors have really stepped in and will play significant time on attack, in the midfield, and on defense, stated head coach Tom Mariano. Our strength this season will definitely be our experience. Our older guys have showed us this fall they are ready to make an impact. Back to pace the Pioneer attack this season is TJ Hutmacher (Pomona, NY), a second team ALL- CAA selections a year ago. Hutmacher led Sacred Heart with 52 points last season, tops in the conference with a 3.71 points-per-game average, on 27 goals and 25 assists. He is also the returning leader in ground balls with 45 in 2002. Looking to join Hutmacher on the attack will be seniors Erik Perez (Locust Valley, NY) and Chris Swier (Hicksville, NY). Perez had 12 goals and four assists last season while Swier chipped in five goals and nine assists to a Pioneer attack that was third in the CAA in scoring with a 18.79 ppg average. In the midfield, seniors Stephen Grabow (Commack, NY) and Daniel DeVoe (East Rockaway, NY) return after solid junior campaigns. Grabow was second in the CAA last season in goals scored, with 35 goals and a 2.50 per-game average. He added seven assists on the year for 42 total points. DeVoe was the only Pioneer to play and start all 14 games last year. He finished the season with 14 points on nine goals and four assists and was fourth on the team with 39 ground balls. Junior James Delmonico (West Islip, NY) will bring added scoring to the mix, coming off a 15 goal, two assist sophomore season in which he saw action in all 14 games. One of the weakness of this year s squad could be winning face-offs as the team will be looking to replace midfielder s Josh Mathon and Cliff Lorenzo. Lorenzo led the nation in face-off percentage in 2002, winning 139 of 206 face-offs taken for a.675 percentage. Mathon was not far behind, ranking 12 nationally with a.586 (95-162) percentage. Face-offs will be a weakness for us, but only because we are replacing the #1 and #12 ranked players, commented Mariano, now in his seventh season at SHU. Our guys are fully capable of doing the job, we just lack game experience in that area right now. One other weakness the Pioneers face this season will be in goal as both Scott Urbineti and Bryan Campo, last year s goalkeepers, have graduated. Campo saw the majority of time in goal, recording 150 saves and sporting a 12.03 goals-against-average. The Pioneers will look for one of three freshman to step in and take over. Thomas Hind (Farmingdale, NY), Jim Millhausen (Arnold, MD) and Steve Liggio (Boynton Beach, FL) will all be auditioning for the job. Defensively, Sacred Heart will look toward seniors Paul Lyons (Bethpage, NY) and Shawn Donnelly (Lake Grove, NY) along with grad student Jason Walsh (Northhampton, MA) to solidify the back and help keep the pressure off the young, inexperienced goalkeepers. The 2003 schedule is a competitive one, that will test the Pioneers early with season opening road games at nationally ranked Massachusetts and conference foe, Towson. We have a very competitive schedule, facing some of the top-teams on the road early, stated Mariano. We will find out very quickly were we are at.
