100KM 50KM MARATHON HALF MARATHON 12KM 4KM Proudly Presented by

Welcome and thank you for supporting the 9 th annual running of the TAN ULTRA RUNNING FESTIVAL, this year consisting of a 4km, 12km, 1/2Marathon, Marathon, 50km and 100km events. I hope you are all looking forward to the great day as you complete your laps around the TAN. With 6 distances with small groups of runners I am sure you will all know each other well after a few laps. Thank you to all runners who are supporting the event. As always events that trailsplus conduct support young people living with cancer. This is by donations paid to Canteen at the completion of each race based on entrant numbers. The TAN is probably one of the most recognised and frequented tracks by runners from all walks of life and ability, many of whom you will be sharing the track with on Sunday. I m sure they will be intrigued by your efforts and commitment to run the ultra distance and multiple laps. Please ensure the running community is well represented and respected by the way we conduct ourselves and be sure to acknowledge others when appropriate and most of all have fun. COURSE NOTES AND SAFETY CONTINUED ACCESS AND THE FUTURE OF THIS EVENT The future ability to hold this event depends totally on how we as a group conduct ourselves. Melbourne city council does not guarantee we can continue to hold this event, but if we are to have a chance of future events in this location it is important we abide by a series of guidelines. It only takes one member of the public to get upset and lodge a complaint and the event may not be allowed to continue. Any rubbish found on course can also reflect poorly on the event, these are just a couple of items to be aware of. We are required to submit a post event report of any incidents, no matter how small or trivial they may seem. Likewise MCC park rangers will also be monitoring the event and making notes and submitting their reports. Its extremely important that our presence does not impact other users of the Tan Track in a negative way. ALWAYS BE RESPECTFUL OF OTHER TRACK USERS Do not startle people by charging up behind them, let them know you are coming past or take a wide birth, remember there will be small children and people with dogs. No doubt some on long leads that will want to run under your legs. They have just as much right to use the track as we do so please respect them and be tolerant, try to predict what might happen as you approach and avoid any issues. Under no circumstances should a runner interfere with, push or touch animals regardless of the situation they present in.

Runners LAP COUNTING Counting your laps is the most important requirements our timing people have to perform. We have several systems in place to help us achieve an accurate result. A electronic chip is on the back of your race number we expect it to perform extremely well and provide instant updates on your progress We may use an ipad backup system if we have enough volunteers GoPro Cameras will be used as a final backup recording the bulk of the day. We ask that runners focus on passing under the gantry on the inside and allow the public to pass under the Gantry on the roadside. This basically means keep to the right which does go a little against the flow, but our signs will direct participants and public. Support Crew SEEKING LAP INFORMATION The role of the timing people is crucial to the success of your runner s day, therefore it is extremely important that you DO NOT approach the timing people requesting information about your runner and how many laps they have completed as this interrupts the recording of runner s laps and can be the main cause of erroneous data. The act of interrupting the timing may be the cause of an error in your runners lap and will not please your runner, we will provide as close to live updates via a big screen for you to view removing the need to request information from the timers. Environment LEAVE NO TRACE Do not leave any sign of rubbish behind, it is very important that we don t drop rubbish or let rubbish get away from us at the aid station. In particular our Gel packets and tear off tabs, please don t drop them on the track. Carry them with you to the aid station or drop in the bins provided YOU MUST ATTEND THE BRIEFING OR WILL NOT BE PERMITTED TO START THE RACE All events will have pre race briefings to go over any questions you may have and to provide me an opportunity to quickly cover what is required from us all on the day. SAFETY It is a requirement of entry to the event that you assist any runner in need of help, if you come across an injured or distressed runner please offer assistance or get assistance for them. Runner s health and safety is a number one priority. We will take into account the time (in regard to cut- offs) you spend with a runner in need; you are then able to continue on with the event and finish.

PERSONAL BELONGINGS If you intend to have valuables please consider locking them in your car out of sight or just don t bring anything too valuable with you. This is a highly publicly accessible area and we cannot guarantee the security of your personal effects. AID STATION The aid station will have water and electrolyte drinks available from 25 litre containers. The Aid Station will be stocked with a small amount of, Snakes, Jelly Beans, Chocolate, Fruit Cake, and much more. TOLET LOCATIONS There are several accessible toilet locations around the Tan. MYER MUSIC BOWL Closest to the Start Finish line, they are 300M toward the city up the path behind the Myer Music Bowl, this is the Main Toilet for pre race and usable during the race. However access to this toilet during the race can be gained from two Paths. You must enter and exit via the same path and not take a short cut when using the toilet. YARRA RIVER SIDE Approx 500M along the Tan track there is a toilet on the riverside of Alexander Avenue, please use the pedestrian crossing and take care if using this facility. Approx half way around the Tan just before Dallas Brooks Drive there is a toilet block across in the park to your left, please take care crossing Birdwood Ave if using this facility. RUNNERS PERSONAL PROVISIONS There is only one aid station located at the start finish area next to the Pillars of Wisdom. You can place you own food and drinks here, please only take up the space you need and respect other runners needs. No Drop Bags should be left in front of the table preventing runner from clear access. Please leave bags under or behind the tables not in use or better still keep your needs with your support group in the allocated spaces, refer to map below. Road Crossings There are two road crossings on the Tan track; these are located at Dallas Brooks Drive and Government house drive. Dallas Brooks Drive is unlikely to see any car traffic on Sunday and there will be minimal traffic on Government House Drive, but please ensure you take care and give way at these crossings as Tan Track users do not have right of way over vehicular traffic. You Must not have any form of music in your ears within 100M of road crossings.

DISTRACTIONS whilst I understand many runners like to run with music, it is a requirement that music is not used to the detriment of yours or any other person s safety. Remember many runners will be offering you encouragement and so will supporters, so please consider how you may be able to hear and acknowledge the support you will receive. Also it is extremely important that you are aware your lap has been counted as you pass by the finish line gantry. Refer Ipod ruling below Ipods Race rules state you can not wear any music devices in your ear that may potentially cause issues with your race, safety being our major concern and keeping track of your laps and communicating with you our secondary concerns. However I understand many of you find it tough going without music, so the following concessions and rules apply for the use of Ipods. ipods may be warn only as per the following rules o No EAR PIECE to be in the ear between the Yellow Signs either side of the start / Finish Gantry this covers a distance of approximately 200M around the timing and aid station area. o One EAR PIECE should be removed when approaching road crossing points. BREACH OF RULING (this will be enforced due to public complaints from recent events) You will be given (1) Warning about earpieces being inserted in restriction zones, if further breaches occur you may be disqualified from the event. I don t want to hear excuses, but I forgot to take it out, I know you will be thinking about a drink or some food so add removing the earpieces to the list. This may seem a tough ruling, but consider the safety implications in a very busy environment, don t make me enforce the ruling; I will have no pleasure in removing any runner from the event if this ruling is breached. Equally I will be very upset if you breach the rule and the result is the event does not get a permit in the future. Start Finish The usual gantry with timing clock and camera recording of the event all day will be used. The cameras on the gantry will record photos every 1 second, be sure to look up and give a smile, even after 2, 3, 5, 11, 13 or 26 laps to get that finish photo. PLEASE KEEP THE START FINISH GANTRY AREA AS CLEAR AS POSSIBLE THIS WILL ASSIST THE TIMERS AND ALSO GIVE THE PUBLIC A CLEAR PASSAGE TO PASS UNDER THE GANTRY IAU & AURA STATUS Please note that TAN ULTRA events 100km / 50km are now IAU labelled from 2016. We have officially had the Tan track measured and certified by an AIMS certified C-Class allowing us to achieve an IAU Bronze Label, this means records can be recorded and acknowledged with AURA.

RACE REGISTRATION / START Registration for all events will be at the Pillars of Wisdom located next to the start line 100km Registration opens at 6:00am 100km Race Briefing held at 6:50am at the start line 100km Race start 7:00am 50km Registration opens at 7:00am at the pillars of wisdom 50km Race Briefing held at 7:50am at the start line 50Km Race Starts 8:00am 42km Registration opens at 8:00am at the pillars of wisdom 42km Race Briefing held at 8:50am at the start line 42Km Race Starts 9:00am 21km Registration opens at 09:00am at the pillars of wisdom 21km Race Briefing held at 09:50am at the start line 21Km Race Starts 10:00am 12km Registration opens at 10:00am at the pillars of wisdom 12km Race Briefing held at 10:50am at the pillars of wisdom 12Km Race Starts 11:00am 4km Registration opens at 10:00am at the pillars of wisdom 4km Race Briefing held at 10:50am at the pillars of wisdom 4Km Race Starts 11:00am, yes same as 12km start RACE NUMBERS All participants must register on the morning and collect your race numbers. Race numbers are to be visible at all times as this allows the timing people to record your lap please ensure you let them see your number and keep it visible. Numbers must be pinned to the front of your shirts or jackets. If you pin the number to your shirt and then put a jacket on, either get it pinned to the jacket or you must raise your jacket so we can see your number ( IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBIITY THAT WE SEE IT ) or your lap may not be counted WE WILL BE USING ELECTRONIC CHIPS ON THE BACK OF THE RACE BIBS The placement of your race bib is crucial to achieve great results. We will also be collecting the chips from the back of the bib after you finish, so please ensure you hand you chip in after the event. Your race number also makes a great souvenir of the event as it contains your name and some great design work created by Mal Gamble. It also contains some information on our event supporters if you are looking for any of their products in the future it will help you remember who supported the event.

Keeping them visible at all times this will also help your fellow runners encourage you by name and you will get to know them better, after all that s what these events in part are about getting out and running with like minded folks, so you might as well get to know their names as you tick off the laps together. ********************************************************** RACE NUMBERS MUST NOT BE PINNED TO YOUR LEGS THEY MUST BE WORN ON YOUR FRONT ABOVE THE WAIST ********************************************************** Navigating the course EASY You Must Run in a Clockwise direction Depending on your distance you will do a short out and back in the reverse direction on lap 1 The weather forecast is looking fairly good for this time of year, though with a possible shower, but you never know what we may get, please ensure you have appropriate clothing and change available. As the night air sets in your damp clothing can bring on mild hyperthermia, so please if you are on track for close to the 12 hours keep an eye on your body temperature. This is even more important if you are slowing down and walking the last part of the race. Be sure to have some warm clothes available at the end of the race also. YOUR FINISHERS MEDAL All finishers will receive a finisher s medal similar to these pictured below. For runners who think they may have finished in the top 3 male and female categories in 100km 50km and 42km and 21km events and need to leave before presentations please come and see me to collect your trophy and for the 3 long events perhaps even collect your Celebratory wine from Andrew Peace Fine Wines. In the 12km( may have 2 nd and 3 rd ) and 4km event 1 st place male and female will also receive a trophy. There are additional prizes for some winners and some spot prizes from our sponsors Footpro, and Drymax socks.

A TRAILSPLUS FIRST STAND IN ASSISTANT RACE DIRECTOR For the first time in over 50 events your race director has had to make a tough decision, well not really, but family has to come first and for approx 3 hours Robyn and Brett will be away watching their son Matthew play in a football grand final even while the other son Tom will be circulating with you in one of the ultra event distances. During this time you will all be in the very capable hands of Olivia who has been very much involved in the day to day running of events on race day for the past few years. There will be some presentations take place during this time and I am sorry I won t be there to congratulate you and hand you your finishers medal. I will be back as quickly as possible and hopefully you may be able to hang around and we can still catch up afterward. PLEASE TRY TO STAY AROUND AFTER YOUR RUN FOR THE PRESENTATION CAR PARKING There is a lot of FREE parking along the river and Alexandra Ave at the start line area, though it will fill quickly and you may have to walk as far as 1km from Anderson St, but there should be ample for runners before any public and football crowds start to need the parking PHOTOGRAPHY We hope to have someone behind the camera on the day to capture a few Pics, be sure to give a smile we should get a few shots of your day at the Tan. AID STATION AND SUPPORT As the Tan now carries an IAU label it is a requirement to adhere to the 1M rule at your runners aid station, it would be advisable to conduct yourself during the event as if it were an championship event to get practice of dealing with your crew in a limited space if you are ever fortunate enough to gain Australian selection. The main rule that we need to be aware of is that as a runner you are not permitted to receive aid of any sort unless it is within 1 metre of your aid station table and location of your food supplies. ( 1M This must be one location. I can t stress enough how important this is especially for the front runners but all participants should be aware and abide by these rules. This also means that runners should not be paced or have items carried for them around the track, this is mainly relevant to the 50km and 100km. PACERS

The Tan track is open to the public and we cannot and will not restrict none event runners from running on race day. However is it is deemed a runner is receiving outside assistance or reported as such that runner may be disqualified from potential records and selection. WEEKEND WEATHER

PRESENTATION Presentation will take place approximately 1pm for the 50km and 3pm for the 100km events or after the completion of the top 3 in the 100km race or as soon as the 3 rd place 50km runners finishes, this may change depending on how the day pans out but this is the plan. Shorter events will be done as soon as possible after the top 3 male and female runners finish. Also if you have finished in the top three places and need to leave before presentation, please come and find me or Olivia and we will present your trophy to you. We would prefer you hang around for the official presentation where you also have an opportunity to receive other prizes, leaving early you will receive your trophy only. This year we have a podium structure and would like all runners available for photos. If leaving early a trophy only will be issued to runners, additional prizes are available at the full presentation only. We believe if you commit to the event you should have time to stay for the presentation, as this is an important time to acknowledge your efforts and those around you. MERCHANDISE SELLING ITEMS ON THE DAY IS NOT PERMITTED AS THIS REQUIRES A SPECIAL PERMIT However pre orders can be collected on the morning at registration and any new orders can be noted as we will have stock on hand. Race Tee Shirts and Coolmax running shirts will be available in limited numbers; there will also be caps, beanies and other product available. For those of you who have ordered or would like some shirts from previous trailsplus events like Maroondah Dam or You Yangs or Macedon or other series and urban events these will be also available.

Start / Finish location and Map showing direction of run.

Melbourne City Council We are extremely grateful for the opportunity to conduct this event on the Tan Track. We appreciate the opportunity to stage a trail running event in the City of Melbourne and express a sincere appreciation to the Team at the MCC for helping us get the event organised for 2016.

COFFEE AND FOOD VAN We are very fortunate to have Alan form The Press no not a newspaper, Alan took care of us at the You Yangs this year with great coffee and awesome toasties sandwiches. The van will be park in prime position just 50 metres from the start line and be there most of the day, so be sure to bring some cash or card, yes pay wave excepted. INSURANCE The event insurance policy does not extend to personal injury; it is highly recommended that you have personal insurance cover or at least ambulance cover in time for the event. The Tan Ultra Distances Events Are Sanctioned by the Australian Ultra runners Association and are certified and measured courses for 2016 they come with have IAU bronze Labels. Support crews can set up in the nominated area shown on the map starting at the Pillars of Wisdom and continuing for a maximum of 250M ONLY. There is to be no support in the form of handing or carrying supplies for runners outside of the designated support crew zone For results to be ratified these rules MUST be adhered to. Any breach of these rules can lead to disqualification in particular where records are involved. Support crew MUST NOT set up at the base of Anderson St Hill or any other location on course except within the designated area at the start finish line.
