Game #15 Road Game #8 (4-3) RHP Josh Zeid (0-1, 8.31) vs LHP Brent Suter (1-0, 0.00) THE GAME TODAY S GAME: The Memphis Redbirds continue their first multi-city road trip of the 2017 campaign in game three of a four-game series against the Colorado Springs Sky Sox. Memphis has dropped six of its last seven contests while Colorado Springs has won six-straight, including four-in-arow against the Redbirds. The Sky Sox lead all of Triple-A baseball with a 9-3 record, and the club tops all domestic minor league teams with a +37 run differential so far this season. Today s game will be broadcast live on Sports56 and 87.7 FM and internet webcast at MemphisRedbirds. com, with Steve Selby on the call. ON THE HILL: Josh Zeid climbs the mound today for the Redbirds in search of his first win of the season. Zeid worked through some control issues in his last start on Saturday against Oklahoma City, ultimately taking the loss. In 4.2 innings, he allowed three runs on four hits and four walks, but countered that with six strikeouts. Zeid is in his first season with the St. Louis organization, signing in March after a stellar WBC performance with Team Israel. Brent Suter looks to keep things rolling for the Sky Sox. The southpaw has made just one start so far for Colorado Springs this season, tossing five scoreless frames at Nashville on Saturday, earning the victory. Suter started the season in the bullpen with Milwaukee, but struggled, giving up four runs on six hits in 3.1 innings across three outings. He split time between the big club and Triple-A a year ago, squaring off with Memphis on two occasions (1-1, 4.00 ERA, 9 IP, 13 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 3 K) SCHEDULE WITH COLORADO SPRINGS: The Redbirds and Sky Sox renew acquaintances after a four-game set last week. Memphis won the first two matchups, but Colorado Springs has won four in a row by a combined score of 38-11. This is one of two trips for Memphis to Security Service Field, the other being the final four games of the season. THIS DATE IN REDBIRDS HISTORY (April 20, 2014): Randal Grichuk and Oscar Taveras hit back-to-back doubles in the bottom of the ninth to give Memphis a walk-off, 5-4 victory over Oklahoma City. Grichuk also launched his third home run of the season in the comeback win. THE SEASON ABOUT LAST NIGHT: Chad Huffman homered and drove in three RBI, but Colorado Springs offensive onslaught was too much in a 13-4 setback. The Redbirds grabbed early 2-0 and 3-1 leads, but the Sky Sox got a grand slam in the third and scored seven times in the seventh to put the game away. Mike Mayers started for the Redbirds and lasted five innings, but gave up six runs on eight hits to suffer his second straight loss. Memphis pitchers have allowed 27 runs on 31 hits in the first two games of the series. PUSHING THE PEN: Mike Mayers appearance yesterday was just the fifth start for a Memphis hurler that went five innings. In 14 games this season, Redbirds starters have failed to complete five innings nine times, with only two pitchers recording at least one out after the fifth (Daniel Poncedeleon 4/11 and Tyler Lyons 4/12). As a result, the bullpen has had to carry a majority of the innings (67.2) when compared to the starters (61.1). Thus far, the relievers have responded with a 4.52 bullpen ERA. WHERE ARE THE RUNS?: After scoring at least five runs in five of the season s first six games, Memphis has been REDBIRDS VS. held in check over the last week. The Birds have not scored more than four runs in their last eight games and have been held to two runs or fewer in four of the last seven contests. BOMBS AWAY: Chad Huffman s two-run dinger yesterday brought Memphis season total to 18, which ties for the most hit in the PCL, and is one shy of the MiLB lead (Quad Cities, 19). Memphis did not hit its 18th homer last season until game 31, which came on May 12. A majority (12 of 18) of the dingers have been solo blasts. Memphis has already hit three leadoff home runs, three game-winning home runs and have had a pair of players (Pham and Carson Kelly) collect multiple home runs in the same game. RUN, RUN, RUNAWAY: Baserunning has been one of the few missteps in the start for Memphis this year. The Redbirds are 6-for-19 in steal attempts and have been picked off seven times. The 13 caught stealings are by far the most in the PCL, with no other squad having been caught more than seven times (Fresno, 9-for-16). EXTRA, EXTRA: The Redbirds have posted 113 hits in the first 14 games of the season, with a near-even split between extra-base knocks (50; 32 2B, 18 HR) and singles (63). The 32 doubles currently lead the PCL. Memphis has collected at least five XBH on six occasions and has an extra-base hit in all but one game this season. STARTING OUT QUICK: Memphis has drawn first blood on 11 occasions, using first-inning tallies to jump-start the night nine times overall, including three leadoff home runs. The Birds have already scored 12 runs in the first inning, their most fruitful inning. The opponent, however, has scored in the first frame each of the last three games. DELIVERING IN THE CLUTCH: Tommy Pham s walkoff single in the 11th inning Monday afternoon was the fourth game-winning hit in the last at-bat for Memphis this season, joining three last at-bat home runs in the season s first seven games. The Birds are one of five PCL teams with multiple wins when tied or trailing after eight frames and one of only two teams with two wins in extra innings. A SERIES WIN: Memphis earned the series victory against New Orleans, something that did not occur until June 9-12 a year ago. In 2016, the Redbirds won just one road series, at Nashville from June 13-16. AN NL FLAIR: Memphis heads out on the road to face the same two teams it just battled on its previous homestand in Colorado Springs (Brewers) and Oklahoma City (Dodgers). Combined with the opening five-game set at New Orleans (Marlins), Memphis faces National League affiliates for the first 20 games of the season, meaning no DH will be used, before an off day. The Redbirds first AL affiliate comes on the next homestand when Round Rock (Rangers) visits for five games from April 27 - May 1. ABOUT LAST SEASON: Memphis finished 65-77 last season, 18.0 games behind first place Nashville, who finished with the best regular season in the Pacific Coast League. The Redbirds had 59 players appear in a game last season, 25 of whom were making their Triple-A debut. MEMPHIS PLAYERS AND COACHES STRIKING NEW GROUND: Righthander pitcher Daniel Poncedeleon became the first player promoted to the Redbirds this season as a counter move for Opening Day starter Luke Weaver going on the disabled list last Monday. Since then, he s tossed a combined 10 innings against Colorado Springs and Oklahoma City and already ranks third on the team in strikeouts with 13. He has fallen off the league leaderboard qualification, but would lead the PCL in opponents average against (.152) and would be third among starters in strikeouts per nine innings pitched (11.70). THE ROSTER: Of the 25 players who comprise Memphis roster, 21 appeared at Triple-A last season, be it with Memphis or another organization. Of those who played at Triple-A, 14 donned a Redbirds uniform. Additionally, the roster is full of Major League experience with 11 players combining for 369 games played. Tommy Pham leads the roster with 136 games of MLB experience. PROSPECTING: The Cardinals organization has seen a steady growth in the rating of its prospects the last three seasons, elevating from 15th to 14th to 12th this season, according to Baseball America. While top prospect Alex Reyes is sidelined for the season, six of the top 30 prospects tabbed by the publication are currently on the Redbirds roster. That includes Luke Weaver (#2), Carson Kelly (#4), Harrison Bader (#7), Paul DeJong (#14), Sam Tuivailala (#23), and Breyvic Valera (#29). NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK: Only three players on Memphis Opening Day squad had not played at the Triple-A level prior to this year. Paul DeJong, Luke Voit, and Rowan Wick all reached as high as Double-A Springfield last year and have appeared at the Triple-A level for the first time in 2017. Pitcher Daniel Poncedeleon became the fourth player to make his Triple-A debut this season last Tuesday. ST. LOUIS MAJORITY: When digging into St. Louis current 25-man roster, 16 players have spent time in Memphis: pitchers Lance Lynn (2009-11), Carlos Martinez (2013-14), Kevin Siegrist (2013-14), Miguel Socolovich (2015-16), Michael Wacha (2013), and Adam Wainwright (2004-05, 08); catcher Yadier Molina (2004); infielders Matt Adams (2012, 14, 16), Matt Carpenter (2011-12), Aledmys Diaz (2015), Greg Garcia (2013-16), and Kolten Wong (2013-14, 16); and outfielders Randal Grichuk (2014, 16), Jose Martinez (2016). and Stephen Piscotty (2014-15). REDBIRDS ALL-TIME ROSTER: Since St. Louis and Memphis signed a player development partnership in 1998, a total of 610 players and coaching staff have appeared on the Redbirds, including this season. Of that number, 252 have played or served in a coaching capacity for the St. Louis Cardinals in their career. BREEDING GROUND: Entering the 2017 campaign, 26 members of the Cardinals 40-man roster have played for the Redbirds in their respective careers. OFFSEASON REBRANDING A FRESH LOOK: The Redbirds unveiled a new brand identity on January 18 that speaks directly to the soul of the city and its rich traditions. The primary logo replicates that of a neon street sign, quickly calling to mind Memphis iconic Beale Street, located just a few blocks from the ballpark. The tube lighting is applied elsewhere throughout the brand package, including in the primary word mark and the numbers seen on the jerseys. Both the home and away uniforms feature the neon Memphis across the front with the neon M formed in the shape of a music note, to honor the home of the blues and the birthplace of rock n roll. In order to successfully capture this essence of Memphis, the Redbirds turned to Dan Simon of Studio Simon for design. The primary colors of the new brand are St. Louis Cardinals red, navy and yellow, to represent the affiliate of the Redbirds since 1998. There are two primary hat versions: a red home hat featuring a more modern take on Rockey the Redbird s head, and the iconic music note neon M on a blue hat with a red bill. Fans will note a faint yellow outline around the jersey elements, which gives the effect that the neon is turned on.
