Welcome to our Programme Welcome to the Monkton Swim School, run in accordance with the Amateur Swimming Association s (ASA) National Plan for Teaching Swimming (NPTS) for children and adults plus the Swimming Teachers Associations (STA) International Learn to Swim Programme (ILSP). The programmes are all-inclusive programmes encompassing all swimming ages and abilities, from 6 months to competition standard swimmers. Monkton Swim School runs 3 terms per year, approximately inline with the school terms. During these terms teachers continuously assess pupils through-out the course against ASA criteria. Pupils are required to consistently and competently complete each of the outcomes to achieve awards and advance to the next stage. To ensure that our lessons are not only educational but also fun, swimmers will be encouraged to take part in a wide range of additional games and skill sessions within their normal swimming lessons. These sessions may include water safety, lifesaving, synchronised swimming, diving and competition skills. These skills when put together result in a competent, confident and safe swimmer who has the skill base to participate in a wider range of water based sports. The speed at which competence is attained varies from pupil to pupil, therefore all pupils will not always progress on to the next stage at the same speed. However on the last few weeks of the term the teachers will go through all the staged criteria, to ensure that all children get a chance to prove their individual skill levels. Parents are encouraged to sit upstairs in our viewing area overlooking the swimming pool, however we do understand that space is limited and some children need their parents by the side of the pool. We do however ask that noise on poolside is kept to a minimum to aid our teachers in delivering their swimming lessons efficiently. On the last week of the swim school term all current swimmers will be able to pick up their feedback form and badges. This is also the opportunity for parents to re-enrol back onto the swim school for the following term. If a child passes their current stage they can be booked onto the next class. We will endeavour to book your child back onto the same day (space dependant). If you are away on holiday for re-enrolment it is essential that you contact us and we can make suitable arrangements to get you child booked onto the class they need.

If your child does not pass they can be booked back on the same day, but in some cases a change of day may be necessary for the child to continue on through the programme. It is first come first serve, so to ensure you get the place you want, booking as soon as you receive your forms is advisable. All existing swimmers have priority re-enrolment onto the swim school, however if you do not re-enrol by the advertised cut off date, the space will be made available to new customers. (Priority does not guarantee the space you want, simply a space.) Badges Badges and certificates are included in the cost of swim school and are given out with feedback forms during re-enrolment. Information about our classes Starfish Classes Parent and Baby Swimming Classes Starfish Beginners (6 Months to 12 Months) These classes use songs, games and guided discovery learning to develop water confidence. This is done though teaching the parent how to teach their child to swim. The aim of the programme is to give parents the opportunity to create a safe and positive attitude towards swimming. This relaxes the child and allows them to develop their swimming while giving the parent time you need to bond with the child. Starfish Intermediate (1 year to 2 years) These classes use a mixture of fun group based activities and individual time with the swimming teacher to create the positive environment need-ed to make swimming lessons fun. The aim of the programme is to build on water confidence skills and to introduce the concepts of swimming such as floating, basic propulsion and develop a range of simple swimming actions. This is achieved though the of floats, aids, back floats and good old fashioned fun. Starfish Advance (2 year to 3 years) These classes use group based activities and individual time with the swimming teacher to allow the child to start to develop their own individual style and swimming strokes. The aim of the class is to allow the child to acquire the skills needed to swim on their front and back with parents support. The child will also work with a range of flotation aids to allow them to gain freedom of movement in the water. Duckling Classes Years 3 to 5 years Swimming Classes With a maximum of 6 in a class and 1 teacher in the water Ducklings Beginners The aim of the programme is to help children to develop water confidence, while working on basic movements and skills in the water. This is done though the use of fun water based games and activities. All children in Ducklings Beginners will start off using back floats to aid them in developing freedom of movement in the water. Ducklings Intermediate The aim of the programme is to improve the basic movements into more complex movements. This is done by building upon the knowledge gained in Ducklings Beginners and introducing further more complex skills for the child to complete. During Ducklings Intermediate all children will start to reduce the floatation aids that they require. Ducklings Advance The aim of the programme is to encourage movement though the water with minimal or no flotation aids. This is done by building on the complex movements and skills learnt in Ducklings Intermediate. During Ducklings Advance the child will start to develop recognisable strokes over a width of the swimming pool.

The Swim Stages ASA Nation Plan for Teaching Swimming Stage 1 This Class is aimed at children over the age of 5 or who have completed all the duckling criteria. These classes aim to have a maximum of 12 in a class with one teacher and an assistant working with them. This stage is the first point on the NPTS and is designed to help children to learn movement throughout the water with the aim to be swimming 1 width of the pool unaided and unsupported. Stage 2 These classes aim to have a maximum of 12 in a class with one teacher and an assistant working with them. The aim of the class is to develop safety within the water this is done though the teaching of floating and rotation within the water as well as learning to entry and exit the water safely without the use of pool steps. Stage 3 These classes aim to have a maximum of 12 in a class with one teacher and an assistant working with them. The class has been designed to work on teaching and improving for all strokes. This is done though a range of push and gliding exercises before moving the skill into full swimming strokes. Stage 4 These classes aim to have a maximum of 12 in a class with one teacher and an assistant working with them. By the end of this stage the children should be able to swim a full width of all four strokes, with many of them working over towards a length of the pool. Stage 5 These classes aim to have a maximum of 10 in a class with one teacher on the side of the pool. The aim of the class is to develop watermanship though the effective use of sculling and treading water. Children will also work on all stamina and technique of all four stokes. Stage 6 These classes aim to have a maximum of 10 in a class with one teacher on the side of the pool. The class has been designed to work on breathing and co-ordination of all four strokes. Children in the class will be able to swim 1 length of the pool of all strokes. Stage 7 These classes aim to have a maximum of 10 in a class with one teacher on the side of the pool. By the end of this class children will of developed quality stroke technique up to 100 metres for all four strokes. Using all skills learnt from previous stages they must complete an obstacle course. Once the Swimmer has developed the core range of skills required to be confident, competent and mastered the four stokes (Stages 1 7), the Swimmer may then have the choice to take part in different aquatic disciplines

Information about the Extra Stages Link to Club Coaching Programme - Swim Style and Swim Elite Swimmers who choose to take this option will swim for 1 hour. The aim of the programme is to give swimmers the opportunity to develop their swimming strokes from recreational swimming into competitive strokes. The programme continues to work on areas such as stamina and technique stroke development and will introduce new areas such as tumble turns and racing starts and finishes. The swimmers will also start to develop an understanding of the laws behind each stroke and how they are applied to swimmers. These sessions are great for anyone who is looking at joining a swimming club or just to keep up their fitness levels. All swimmers are expected to bring a drink onto poolside to enable them to remain hydrated throughout the session. Water Polo - for children up to 16yrs This is a fun, high energy ball game in the pool and it even has the Royal Seal of Approval. During the sessions participants will get the opportunity to develop both Swimming skills and specific water polo skills, such as ball handing, passing, shooting and defending, this is done though drills and match play. Swimmers will need to be able swim 50 meters of the pool and tread water for 2 minutes. Rookie Lifeguard The Rookie Lifeguard programme is the junior award scheme of the Royal Lifesaving Society UK. For most children Rookie Lifeguard will be the first opportunity to explore water safety and alternative safe aquatic play. Rookie Lifeguard skills make swimmers aware of how to take better care of themselves, their family and friends, and give them the information they need to promote water safety in their day to day activities. The awards contain survival, rescue and sports skills as well as Life Support and water safety elements. Rookie Lifeguard is primarily aimed at children aged 8 12 years although most of the skills can be taught to people of all ages. Starting with Stage 1 of the Bronze Award and progressing through to Stage 3 of the Gold Award, Rookie Lifeguard begins at an ability level suitable for swimmers who have just learned to swim and progresses to the level of performing Lifesaving tows.

Survive and Save Survive & Save is the new lifesaving standard. There are Bronze, Silver and Gold Levels for you to take part in. You can also choose any one of Medallion, Beach, Stillwater or Sport programmes as areas to specialize in for each medal category. You can complete just one or all four of the specialist areas before you move on to the next medal. Once you have completed the Survive & Save programme there is still the ultimate challenge for you - the Distinction Award. This is presented when you have successfully completed 3 Gold Level categories. The new Survive & Save programme has been reviewed and developed over several years with many trainers, committees and candidates contributing to a new and exciting format for our clubs, trainers and YOU the candidate. Due to the nature of this level some sessions of the term will be spent sat on the poolside learning. As part of the survive and save syllabus, all candidates will get a candidate pack, when they first enrol onto the program. Flip, Fun and More The emphasis may be on play but Flip, Fun and more, the ASA s way to increase participation in a range of different sports, has a serious side also. Guiding the young swimmer through developing a range of skills, it is the perfect foundation for constructing Olympic hopefuls. Targeted at children between the ages of 7 and 11, Flip, Fun and more is a programme of skill development with the stress firmly on fun and offers children and young people the chance to experience something new and challenging. The programme encourages agility, co-ordination and balance, and uses children s positive energy to increase their awareness of the skills, such as diving, ball handling, sculling, tumble turning, and Synchronised swimming. Guiding and developing children s confidence and ability to try new skills in a safe and rewarding environment, Flip, Fun and more is a progressive and entertaining start to a young person s first sessions in a different swimming sport.

Private Swimming Lessons Some children do not work well within a group environment or perhaps they are nervous as its their first time in the water. Alternatively they may just need a few improver lessons to catch up with the others in their group. One to One and One to Two lessons enable your child to receive targeted tuition based around goals set by you and your child s needs. E.g. Stroke Development, Breathing Techniques, Water Confidence Skill Development Bridging gap between swim school levels With a number of teachers who actively teach 1-to-1 and 1-to-2, we are sure that we will find a teacher to match your requirements. Per 30 mins 1-to-1 lessons 18.00 1-to-2 lessons 21.00 How to Book If you would like to book a private lessons, please ask at reception for a booking form or give us a call on 01225 833363.
