1 2017 Annual General Meeting Minutes April 2, 2017 Location: Italian Canadian Cultural Association, Lower Level Clubhouse 2629 Agricola Street, Halifax. Review Minutes of Previous AGM: Garrett Chase Garrett Chase reviewed the minutes Rob Sweeney moves that the minutes be accepted as read. Cary Hollet seconded the motion. President s Report: Gary Walsh Gary Walsh reviewed the President s Report Gary spoke in regards to Pat Thompson, provincial staff person with Sport NS. Gary discussed the Development Grant, which has an annual rate of $5000 for Karate Nova Scotia. KNS was able to maintain a standard whereby they continue to receive at total of $15,000 over the remaining three years. Gary followed up on Block Funding, 2017 follow up report coming due April 17. Block funding provides KNS with $7500 annually. Gary discussed Performance Pathways/High Performance Funding. KNS Provided funding of $12,500 each year from 2016-2019. Gary discussed an application was submitted for a PSO Grant to purchase a state of the art Score/Clock system and Sport Data Software and Support. KNS received $3000 Grant and have now purchased much of the equipment needed for tournaments of almost any size. Gary discussed Major Tournaments and Events: Special thanks to Kumite and Kata Coaching staff for a successful year at the 2017 Nationals. Gary discussed preparations for hosting the 2018 National Championships in Halifax. Gary and Pat are working towards finalizing details. Gary spoke to his role as President and extended his thoughts on remaining President.

2 Gary discussed that KNS is always appreciative of any help in the Association, even non board members. Gary Spoke to the passing of Victor Swinimer and a moment of silence was held on his behalf. Mitchell German moves to approve the President s Report. Matthew Sullivan seconded the motion. Treasurer s Report: Chris Richards Chris submitted a spreadsheet to the members and reviewed the KNS Financial Report. Chris noted a very successful year. Chris noted that Grants included in Revenue. Chris discussed that registration fees are not being submitted consistently in time. Chris discussed that we still have cheques to cash that are not in the report. Karen Armour discussed the Team Account and High Performance NCCP. Karen discussed details regarding our opening balance- $20,000 Karen put in a successful appeal for $8000 of funding that KNS missed out on. Karen discussed fund that are being allocated to bring Douglas Brose clinic to Halifax. Dave Griffin moves to approve Treasurer s Report. Karen Armour seconded the motion. Membership Report: Andrew Swiber Currently KNS has 1137 members and 26 Dojos. Andrew reviewed the dojos for KNS. Andrew noted Mark Burgess, returning dojo. Andrew noted 877 Junior members, and 135 Adult members. 2018 Membership underway- very important to submit on time (October 31) and on proper forms. Many forms still being submitted on old spreadsheets and not complete. Andrew discussed how KNS are looking for ways to determine proper demographics. Ideally Karate Canada would like email for every student along with mailing address. KNS has decided to refuse this practice for the current year; however, we are looking towards subsequent years. 3 Theresa Griffin seconded the motion. Voting Results: All in favour, motion passed. NCCP Report: Karen Armour Karen read the NCCP report Karen discussed Pathway Instructor Levels and how there are different coaching streams based on coaches interests, noting that there is a five year plan and we are entering our fifth year. Karen discussed Karate Canada Summit and Nationals. Karen discussed that KNS is planning on putting on NCCP courses again in 2018 provided there is enough interest. There would be a minimum requirement of five people to participate in the course. Jeff Murphy moves to approve the NCCP report. Dave Griffin seconded the motion. Coaches Report: Karen Armour Karen reviewed the coaches report. Karen discussed the 2017 National Championships results. 9 Medals won. NS Karate Team had 15 Athletes, 5 athletes present at the AGM. Riley Deveau, Trysten Deveau, Tyler Deveau, Maddox Fields, Shannon Doane. Karen noted that Trysten Deveau and Brooklynn Rutherford competed in team Kumite on Atlantic Team. Karen discussed International Competitions: Ryan O Neil competed at the Senior Pan Ams and placed 9th in his division in Rio de Janeiro. Croatia Youth World Cup: Trysten Deveau, Brooklynn Rutherford, and Riley Deveau competed. Riley came in 9th in his division. Junior Pan Ams in Ecuador: Trysten Deveau, Riley Deveau, and Yanick Boudera competed. Trysten received a bronze medal in U21 division -55kg and in Team fighting. Riley Deveau came 5th in his division. Karen discussed 2017-2018 Season: At the first Team workout of the season, there was close to 40 athletes! Shannon Doane will become Assistant Kata Coach. Dave Griffin acknowledged. Karen also announced that Chrissy Murphy will be Team Manager. Gilles Boudreau moves to approve the Coaches Report. Cary Hollett seconded the motion.

4 Officials Report: David Griffin David read the report Officials have participated in Provincial, Regional and International Clinics and competitions. Number of officials has significantly increased this year. At recent January Grand Prix, officials were able to take breaks as there was a surplus of officials who attended. Garrett Chase received his provisional National Kata Judge A and Kumite Judge A at the Atlantic Regional Official clinic, hosted in Fredericton NB which was ratified at this Quebec City Nationals. David attended the WKF Senior World Championships and received his Kumite Judge B license. David also attended the Paris Open Karate Championships January 20,21,22. There are officials clinics scheduled for April 7, June 2, Friday nights before the respective tournaments. David announced there would be a provincial level certification at a date and time to be announced later this year, likely late summer or early fall. Karen Armour motions to approve the Coaches Report. Dale Ellis Seconded the motion Nationals Update: Gary Walsh Gary reviewed the Nationals Update along with emails from Stephane Rivest from Karate Canada. Canada Games Centre has final layout for the competition and surrounding areas. Gary spoke about using the Upper track for Opening Ceremonies, potentially having Bagpipes as well. Gary discussed partnership between Bell TV 1 for Broadcast and Live Streaming. Funding Assistance from Halifax City, Events Nova Scotia, and the Dept. of Communities, Sports and Recreation are well on their way to fruition. Hotels have been arranged, Marriott and 2 Deltas. Sheraton will be used for Overflow. David Griffin mentioned Sponsorships and Funding for Nationals. If anyone knew of a more direct way to reach Chamber of Commerce to please forward info to David Griffin. Elizabeth Killam motions to approve the Nationals Update Shannon Doane seconded the motion. Open Floor for New Business: Karate Nova Scotia to put an updated constitution on our website. Outdated since 2000.

Voting was conducted privately by ballot. Results: President: Gary Walsh 2nd Vice President: Theresa Griffin (nominated by David Griffin, all in favour) Secretary: Garrett Chase (Theresa Griffin nominated, Mitchell German 2 nd ) Treasurer: Chris Richards (Dave Griffin (1 st ) and Karen Armour (2 nd ) nominated) South Shore Nova Regional Director: Matthew Tibbert (Tiana Hutchinson nominated) Motion to Close Election: Cary Hollett motions to approve election close. Jeff Murphy seconded the motion. Voting Results: All in Favour Motion to close meeting: Cary Hollet moves to close the meeting. Jeff McLaughlin seconded the motion. Meeting adjourned at 3:55pm.
