WSRC News & Events Our monthly news and events update for August 2018 WELCOME! It s been a while since our last newsletter and we hope you have all been out having fun with your ponies in the sunshine (and the heat!!!). Thank you to everybody who has supported the events that we have put on over the Summer so far, and as you will see we still have more to come over the coming months and into the Autumn. Hopefully amongst the competitions and instruction, there will be a little something for everyone to enjoy, particularly now we ve finally had some rain! As usual, the timetable of upcoming events is at the end of this Newsletter. NEWS ITEMS PAST & FUTURE EVENTS Annual WSRC Summer Day Camp We had a wonderful day at Munstead despite it being extremely hot. Hinda Inglis had us all strutting our stuff in the flatwork session, and Eloise Mayhead got us off the ground with fabulous polework and showjumping exercises. Sarah-Jane Hornsby then guided us round the cross country with some amongst us jumping some very impressive fences! Lunch was a fun affair and everyone made a huge effort with their contributions to the buffet which did include prosecco of course! Overall we saw a lot of big smiling faces and that was just the horses!! We are looking forward to running this again (maybe with a bit of twist next year!).

Testimonial from Sue Connolly.. Having not been to camp since pony club days (1982 actually... think the launch of the cassette tape, Fresh young Kylie Minogue and Mull of Kintyre!) I was extremely nervous attending.. I d packed a lunch even though there was a free one (no such thing my mum always said...) and Dolly and I headed off to Munstead. Dolly and I are a new pairing having only bought her in December via the lovely Lynn Roberts. My grouping was Uber talented (Catherine, Julie and Rebecca) and I got the feeling they knew what knew the lay of the land was today, but encouragement, support and a lots of laughter flowed like gin & prosecco (which was mentioned quite a lot during the afternoon..) Hinda, our flatwork instructor was fantastic and before we had even tightened our girths knew each horse s traits, weaknesses and benefits. SJ next and attentive instructor Eloise who settled nervous riders and horses, giving each rider a course to suit them and their level. You re not pressured into completing anything and can set your own target and then watch the remainder of any of the 3 lessons or even ask just to do something you want to try and feel will benefit you and 2

ensuring you compete it correctly which, if you left your cans of confidence in the fridge at home (like me!) is a blessing. After an excellent lunch on went the (rather tighter!) brave pants for XC. Sarah-Jane again was fantastic and supported every single stride my group took explaining how to ride fences, skinny s and ditches. The beauty of WSRC camp at Munstead is you can feel the support and enjoyment in the layout of the camp. It s quiet. It s calm and very well organised. Like me if you re a newbie to WSRC and want to go but don t really know anyone or an old returning member I can t recommend camp enough. I came away knowing my new girl better than any other event we have done in our first year. So... 2019 GO TO CAMP! Best day out for you and your pony. See you there and I ll say I told you so at the end! Dressage Teams NAF National & LSE Dressage and Riding Test Qualifier 21 st July We had an eventful day at the London & SE and national dressage qualifiers at Pachesham. We had some great tests from WSRC and some wonderful new faces on our teams who I really can t wait to get back out again soon! The Chilworth Chicks team of Sophie Tack, Rebecca Attridge, myself and Louise Hollington came a credible 7th in the L&SE competition, missing out on 6th place by just two marks. Our other team of the Albury Aces (Lizzy Crossan, Judith Dunne, Jacquie Fabb and Lisa Vanoli) put up a great fight with some impressive 60+ scores which at any normal competition would have been highly competitive! Well done to you all. Both Lizzy and I entered the Dreaded Riding test and I am delighted that Romeo stepped up and came 4th in the nationals and 6th in the L&SE competition, qualifying for the nationals at Lincoln which unfortunately we cannot attend this year. We all had a great day...prosecco was consumed and Judith and I even had a red arrows fly past to finish our tests... Thanks to everyone - we need to be in it to win it and if you don t attend the party you don t get the fizz!! 3

Dressage and Showing Show We had a great turnout for our first show at Whipley Manor, the sun shone and we had a lot of fun! The dressage got us off to a flying start, followed by the showing classes and the have a go trec which was extremely popular! There were doughnuts & cakes for the humans and pony nut prizes for the ponies (even if Julie s Romeo did try and help himself to the whole tray!!). Congratulations to our class winners who were: Class 1 - Into C - Sharon Overington Class 2 Prelim 13- Julie Johnson Class 3 Novice 27 - Pili Spiers Velarde Class 4 Condition and Turnout - Vicky Alexander Class 5 - In Hand Horse/Pony - Caroline Court Class 6 Have a Go Ridden Showing - Vicky Alexander Class 7 Coloureds and Cobs - Caroline Wright Class 8 Veterans 15+ - Becky Shepherd Class 9 - Riding Club Horse/Pony - Julie Johnson And a HUGE thank you to our judges Sarah Jane Hornsby and Vicky Palmer, Ro and Cass for the Trec, and all our helpers. Also thank you to Lisa and Will for allowing use of a great show ground Show Jumping and Showing Show Sunday 19 th August Last call for competitors!! Our show jumping show has classes for everyone from cross poles to 90cm and showing for all levels including condition and turnout, cobs, coloureds, veterans and Riding Club horse or pony. We have had rain so the ground will be good, venue is amazing and a load of WSRC club members will be on hand to help and have fun throughout the day! Closing date is Friday 17 th but entries will be taken on the day. Come and join the fun! For further information/queries contact Jenny Tully on jennytully2000@yahoo.co.uk http://www.westsurreyridingclub.co.uk/activities.html 4

Annual AGM and Membership Renewal We know it feels a bit scary to be talking about November when it s only August, but it will come up fast. This is just a reminder that we will have our annual AGM meeting (date to be announced) in November, and that annual membership runs from 1 st November up until the 31 st October. So, from 1 st November 2018 onwards, you will need to have renewed your membership to participate in our instruction and events. Regrettably this year we are having to increase our membership fee to reflect our increased costs and outgoings and in line with what other local riding clubs charge, so for the 2018-2019 membership year the annual cost will be 28 for renewing members, and 30 for new members. Helpers Over the coming weeks, you will see on Facebook or via email some pleas for helpers remember that it is a condition of membership that you help at least once during the membership year.so if you see a date below that you might be able to come along to and provide assistance, please do give us a shout. We rely on volunteers to make all these events happen for our members. Bridleways Update from Katherine Manson, WSRC Bridleways Committee Member: Evidence of use for track past Robins Wood off Ride/Smugglers Lane. I have received an update from Maggie Scott about the above path. Here is the current situation which is looking hopeful as reported by Maggie; Over the summer months, we have managed to gather a good number of evidence forms, more than our target number, which the BHS has now examined. The forms cover the whole span of the last twenty years, with many statements also indicating that the track in question, joining Row Lane with the Byway running south from Farley Green, has been in use for many years previous to this too. BHS has advised several forms need revisiting to ensure each is a clear and accurate account, and this will be completed in the next few months. The legal process then starts with an application to SCC. 8

ABOUT WEST SURREY RIDING CLUB West Surrey Riding Club (affiliated to the British Riding Club) is a small friendly club based in Area 11 in the Surrey Hills conservation area between Guildford and Cranleigh. Our primary objective as a club is to help and encourage our members in all aspects of horsey life from the increasingly popular Trec to interactive lecture demonstrations, instruction and team competitions. The emphasis we try to maintain in the club is to make owning and training your horse as enjoyable and sociable as possible while still being informative and safe. We know that the majority of our riders are keen to improve their skills and do the very best for their horses, so all the events we organise are aimed to promote these things. For more information visit www.westsurreyridingclub.co.uk 11
