The weekend tournament should challenge the Ponies as three of the participating teams (UC Santa Barbara, New Mexico and SMU) all received votes in the latest AVCA top-25 poll. This past weekend SMU finished 2-1 as it hosted the Doubletree Invitational at Moody Coliseum. Wilkerson twice attacked at over a.400 clip including converting on 12 of 21 swings (.571) against Texas Tech. The senior added two more double-doubles (kills and digs) during the weekend to bring her season total to four this season. Under her tutelage, the Mustangs have moved into the national spotlight with team and individual regional and national rankings. She has coached players to All-Conference honors 21 times and two All-American honorees. Mustang athletes have not only excelled on the court under Seifert, but also in the classroom, where 76 student-athletes have been awarded Academic All-Conference Honors. Building a program from the ground up is an arduous process, but Seifert has put in the foundation for the Mustangs more recent successes. As the veritable architect of the SMU Volleyball program, coach Seifert has overseen the Mustangs rise from the beginning struggles to a team that is capable of competing with any team in the nation. In 2005, SMU saw a transition into another conference. As the Mustangs joined Conference USA, they depended on the combination of a consistent returning class and strong newcomers to guide them through the season. The Mustangs went 13-16 overall and 8-7 in their inaugural season of C-USA. The team notched the nation s 23rd-highest number of digs per game while freshman Natalie Peters posted the 34th best number of blocks per game in the nation. In 2006, the Seifert-led Mustangs compiled an overall record of 17-15 and notched several milestones in the process. SMU hosted its first nationally-televised match and the first volleyball action televised from Moody Coliseum on Nov. 10, when the Mustangs hosted Houston. With a win over UTA on Sept. 1, the Mustangs and Seifert recorded the program s 150th win. Junior outside hitter Rachel Giubilato led the Mustangs and was ranked nationally in kills per game. Freshmen Kendra Kahanek and Candice Davis joined Giubilato in rewriting the SMU record book in more than 10 different statistical categories. The 2007 season saw the best start in program history, with the Mustangs winning its first six matches, including SMU s first win over Texas Tech. The Ponies were 10-3 heading into the championship match at the New Hampshire Invitational, when outside hitter and team captain Giubilato went down with a career-ending knee injury. The Mustangs were forced to rely heavily on All-Freshman outside hitter Kathryn Wilkerson and senior co-captain Caitlin Rainbird. Seifert s team accumulating numerous statistically meaningful performances during the year, compiled a 16-15 overall record and progressed to the C-USA Tournament. The 2008 squad led by two seniors and two juniors in the rotation, saw four freshman regularly in the starting lineup. The Mustangs went 14-17 on the season, but the experience and maturity gained by the four freshmen proved to be the foundation for the success in the following years. The 2009 season saw a Seifert-led squad produce a 19-12 record behind the program s first All-American Honorable Mentions in sophomore Dana Powell and senior Kendra Kahanek. As a whole, the Mustangs defense set a SMU single-season record with 317.5 blocks in just 121 games, while holding its opponents to 223.5 team blocks. The Mustangs were particularly tough at home winning 12 of 14 games in Moody Coliseum. Seifert joined SMU after six years as assistant coach at Texas Tech. The Lady Raiders compiled an overall record of 128-62 during Seifert s tenure, with NCAA tournament appearances from 1990-92 and regional semifinal berths in 1990 and 1991. A 1978 graduate of Saint Francis (Minn.) High School, Seifert held volleyball, softball, track and basketball coaching jobs at several different colleges and high schools in Colorado, Wisconsin and Minnesota from 1982-86. In addition to coaching, Seifert serves as the chair for the D1 Midwest Region Awards responsible for the AVCA All-Region and All-America selections. THE SEIFERT FILE Lisa Seifert enters her 15th season on the Hilltop as coach of the Mustangs Member of AVCA Coaches Poll Committee, NCAA West Selection Committee and serves as Midwest Region Awards Chair Has coached two All-Americans, 71 Academic All- Conference Honorees, 21 All-Conference Honorees and earned two academic team awards by the AVCA 2003 WAC Coach of the Year 215-216 Career Record Previously assistant coach at Texas Tech Seifert earned her B.S. in physical education in 1983 from Winona State (Minn.) University, where she played volleyball and softball, and added a master s degree in physical education from Wisconsin-LaCrosse in 1987.

PROGRAM NOTES MUSTANGS HOST DOUBLETREE SMU hosted the Doubletree Invitational Sept. 3-4 and faced off against teams from Texas State, Texas Tech and UC Davis. The Mustangs defeated Texas State and Texas Tech on Friday, before dropping their first match of the year against UC Davis in the Championship Match on Saturday. The two wins improves the Mustangs season record to 5-1 on the year. SMU received runner-ups in the Doubletree Invite with Kathnryn Wilkerson and Sidney Stewart receiving All-Tournament awards. BAYLOR CLASSIC SWEEP The Mustangs started the 2010 season off strong with three wins in the Baylor Classic in Waco, Texas. SMU defeated Butler, Baylor and Stephen F. Austin in the two day tournament to start the year, 3-0, which is the best season start since 2007. The win against Baylor marked the first timie in program history the Mustangs were able to win at Baylor. TOUGH ROAD IN 2010 The Mustangs 2010 schedule features eight teams that participated in the 2009 NCAA Tournament. With an early win over Baylor, the Mustangs are 1-0 this season over last season s NCAA teams. LOOKING AHEAD After this weekend s Lobo Comcast Challenge, the Mustangs will make road trips to Wichita State and TCU before beginning Conference USA play at UAB. IN THE STABLE Outside of Powell the Mustangs return a strong group of players to build upon the success of last season. SMU returns six of its top eight rotational players and add in freshman middle blocker Caroline Daly and four defensive specialists to an already solid core. The major question the Mustangs have heading into the 2010 season is finding a replacement to outside hitter Kendra Kahanek. TRIPLE DOUBLE-DOUBLES Three Mustang athletes, Dana Powell, Kathryn Wilkerson and Kelli Becerra, have each notched two double-doubles this season. Powell and Wilkerson s came on kills and digs, while Becerra went double-figures in assists and digs. Since the program s inception in 1996, Seifert has led the team into a new conference (C-USA) defeated ranked and top-regional teams and proven to be a top-notch recruiter. Since 2003, the Mustangs have accumulated a 119-96 (54.7%) record and continue to reach new heights as a program. Last year s 19-12 overall mark is the best since joining C-USA and with returning six of its eight top starters from last year returning, the best is yet to come. Last year, for the first time in program history the Mustangs placed in the top-50 nationally in two statistical categories. SMU ranked 23rd in blocks per set at 2.62 and 28th in the NCAA in digs per set with 16.99. The Mustangs return its top four leaders in digs per set from last season. The Mustangs set another top mark in 2009 by garnering four C-USA Player of the Week awards during the year. Dana Powell, Sidney Stewart (twice) and Kendra Kahanek all were rewarded for their fine play by the conference office during the season. Lisa Seifert leads all Conference USA coaches with 217 wins with the current school. GO DEEP Head coach Lisa Seifert recently described the Mustangs as one of her deepest teams she has had while on the Hilltop. The Mustangs return a strong veteran unit from last year that features three seniors and fourjuniors in the rotation.
