NEWSLETTER NAME In July 1797, Lt. Matthew Flinders climbed Mount Beerburrum and as such was the first European to do so. In honour of this feat, the newsletter of the Glasshouse Bushwalkers Club Inc. is named after the ship in which he circumnavigated Australia HMS Investigator. UPCOMING S *For more explanation about the below outings please see the club s Outings Guide DATE 27/01/2018 10 Hampden Court, Brassall BVRT Night Walk starting with a BBQ TYPE NW Start Elevation 2 m Min Elevation 0 m DISTANCE 13 km End Elevation 2 m Max Elevation 14 m INDEX 1.36 Gain 54 m Max Grade 14 m in 0.3 km = 5% Rail trail 5.00 pm Drive through Brisbane to the Ipswich Motorway. From the junction with the Centenary Highway, continue on the Ipswich Motorway towards Ipswich. 4kms on the Ipswich Motorway (M7) is the junction with the Logan Motorway and the Ipswich Motorway becomes the M2. & km further on take the exit onto the Warrego Highway and travel towards Toowoomba. After 13 km take the exit onto State Route 38 - Pine Mountain Road exit and exit towards Ipswich. Continue onto Fernvale Road/ Ipswich Warrego Highway Connection/ Route 38 and drive for 1.2 km to turn right into Henry Street. At the roundabout, after 50m, continue straight ahead onto Highmead Drive. After 170m turn right into Hampden Court and park near the walkway into Haig Street Quarry Bushland Reserve about halfway along the street. DIRECTIONS: Meet at 5.00pm and have a BBQ with Ipswich Bushwalkers Club at Tom Craik Lookout with its views west of Ipswich towards Cunningham,s Gap and the Main Range. After the BBQ, a car shuttle will be set up at Wanora Road, with the start of the walk at Diamantina Boulevard just below the Haig Street Quarry Bushland Reserve. The walk follows the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail for 13km to Wanora, where a Ipswich Bushwalkers Club member lives and supper will be provided. After supper the cars are collected. Dinner for BBQ, boots, water (at least 2 litres), torch/headlamp, medication (if required to be carried or taken during walk). 3

DATE Sunday 11/02/2018 White Cedar Day Use Area, Northbrook Parkway, via Mount Glorious Northbrook Gorge TYPE Swim/Walk Start Elevation 293 m Min Elevation 237 m DISTANCE 3.2 km End Elevation 335 m Max Elevation 335 m INDEX 3.86 Gain 103 m Max Grade 50 m in 0.4 km = 12% Walking trail, creek, swim through gorges 8.00am Drive out to Samford from Petrie, and continue through Samford to Mt Glorious and Mount Nebo. Ascend the D Aguilar Range and at the top turn right to travel through Mount Glorious village. Continue through Mount Glorious Village onto Northbrook Parkway and follow down to Northbrook Creek crossings. White Cedar Day Use Area is on the right as you reach the bottom. DIRECTIONS: Car pool to the start of the walk. From the car park descend on the narrow track to Northbrook Creek and then follow Northbrook Creek upstream. The first gorge is shortly reached has to be swum through as the gorge walls plummet into the creek. Form this section walk upstream for a few hundred metres to the second gorge which can be waded through. Continue along the creek to the final gorge with a waterfall at the end. Return via the same way. Boots, hat, sunscreen, water (at least 2 litres), snacks, towel, waterproof bag, light shoes/ sandals to wear in creek instead of boots. DATE Sunday 25/02/2018 Glass House Mountains Lookout, Glass House Woodford Road, Glass House Mountains Walking tracks in vicinity of lookout TYPE Walk Start Elevation 174 m Min Elevation 76 m DISTANCE 6 km End Elevation 174m Max Elevation 174 m INDEX 2.1 Gain 117 m Max Grade 100 m in 1.8 km = 5.1% Walking trail 9.00am 4

Drive out to Beerburrum. If coming up Beerburrum Road, turn right just before Mount Beerburrum onto Beerburrum - Woodford Road. If coming from the Bruce Highway follow Steve Irwin Way to the Beerburrum Turn off and drive into Beerburrum. Continue through and pass Mount Beerburrum, and take next right onto Beerburrum - Woodford Road. Once on Beerburrum- Woodford Road, drive 4.0km and turn right onto Old Gympie Road. Turn left after 2.3 km at the sign onto Glass House - Woodford Road. Drive for 2.7km to the lookout. DIRECTIONS: Park the car anywhere in the area. Walk into the lookout area and locate the south western trail head. Enter on this track and meander around to pick up Lamb Track. Continue around to complete a circuit. Boots, hat, sunscreen, water (at least 2 litres), snacks. NOTE: After the walk, the club will adjourn to Matthew Flinders Park on Steve Irwin Way for a meeting, particularly about the Pilgrimage. DATE Sunday 11/03/2018 Sheepstation Creek Conservation park Circuit in the conservation park TYPE Walk Start Elevation 47 m Min Elevation 34 m DISTANCE 6 km End Elevation 47 m Max Elevation 66 m INDEX 1.37 Gain 86 m Max Grade 26 m in 2 km = 1.5% Walking trail 8.00am Drive through Morayfield on Morayfield Road, passing the Morayfield Shopping Centre. Continue straight ahead through the next roundabout and get in the right lane to turn right at the next lights with Bunnings on the corner. Turn into Walkers Road, then take the next left onto Oakey Flat Road. Continue on Oakey Flat Road for 5.0 km and then turn right onto Williamson Road. Follow for 1.4 km to where Williamson veers to the right and Forest Hills Drive continues straight ahead. Veer right to continue on Williamson Road. After 400m turn left to stay on Williamson Road. Follow Williamson Road to the end and park near the entry into the Conservation Park on the left. DIRECTIONS: As the distance for a decent circuit is 6km, side trips may be included to further improve the mapping of the tracks in this conservative park. Boots, hat, sunscreen, water (at least 2 litres), snacks, lunch. 5

Summit and Party Ashgrove Library, 87 Amarina Avenue, Ashgrove QLD 4060 Saturday 17th March 11.00am - 4.00pm Sunday 18th March 9.00am to 1.00pm This is a chance for club members to meet members of other clubs and join in discussions and presentations on all matters of bushwalking including latest technology, social media, developments in trails, the Queensland landscape, etc. The program is being compiled and will be published upon completion. Happy Feet Bushwalk 2018 - Gheerulla Circuit and Baxter Creek Falls Diabetes Qld fundraiser with Bushwalking Queensland Inc. Saturday 24th March 8.00 am - Gheerulla Circuit Meeting at either Mapleton State School or the gate to Thilba Thalba Walkers Camp, Delicia Road, the walk will commence from Thilba That Walkers Camp and firstly descend to Gheerulla Creek, then follow the creek upstream to Gheerulla Falls. The walk then ascends to Delicia Road and follows the walking track to Thilba Thalba Walkers Camp - 25km walk. See Gavin for registration details Sunday 25th March 8.00 am - Baxter Creek Falls Meeting at either Mapleton State School or Delicia Road Conservation Park, the walk commences from Delicia Road Conservation Park and follows the walking track and streets to Mapleton Falls, Baxter Creek Falls and Flaxton Mill Walkers Camp out to Flaxton Mill Road. Transport has been arranged to ferry walkers back to Delicia Road. No members of the public have registered for this walk as yet so may be a strictly Bushwalking Queensland walk. More information see Gavin. DATE Friday 30th March - Monday 02nd April (Easter) Jimna Base Camp, 21 School Road, Jimna Various Pilgrimage walks - familiarisation and finding new ones. TYPE Walks Start Elevation Various Min Elevation Various DISTANCE Various End Elevation Various Max Elevation Various INDEX Various Gain Various Max Grade Various Walking trail, forestry roads, other tracks 8.00am each day Drive on the D Aguilar Highway to Kilcoy. In Kilcoy continue straight ahead to the clock tower/ roundabout and turn right to Jimna. About 2km later veer left to keep on the Murgon-Kilcoy Road. Follow this road for about 40km. Continue past the first Jimna sign on Bellbird Road, and then pass the Forestry Office Sign. Take the next turn right onto School Road and follow down to the Jimna Base Camp on the right. If you get to Peach Trees sign you have just missed School Road. 6

DIRECTIONS: Camp for Easter at Jimna Base Camp, and the owners are sponsoring our stay for the Pilgrimage so there are no camp fees for Easter. The walks are to sound out walks for the Pilgrimage later this year. Boots, hat, sunscreen, water (at least 2 litres), snacks, lunch for the day walks. Tent, camping gear, etc, for staying. If the weather is hot bring swimmers as there are a number of swimming holes to try out! CLUB NEWS BUSHWALKING QUEENSLAND INC. Website update Bushwalking Queensland Inc. has engaged a Technical Working Group to upgrade the BWQ website, which this club is a part of, using the latest technology. There have been continuing access problems accessing the club website, hence a temporary move to the blog site on WordPress., to keep the information current. Fundraising Agenda The following fundraising activities for Diabetes Qld are on the Bushwalking Queensland Inc. Calendar: HAPPY FEET BUSHWALK 2018 This bushwalk is two events: - a 25km walk around Gheerulla Circuit on Saturday 24th March 2018 - a 9 km walk from Delicia Road Conservation Park to Flaxton Mill Road on Sunday 25th March 2018 Diabetes Qld have given a discount for bushwalking club members, so if interested please see Gavin. BVRT TREK 4 DQ Based on the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail there are three events: 100km - Moore to Cricket Pitch, Pine Mountain Road, Pine Mountain - 13-15 July 2018 25km - Native Garden, Lowood to Cricket Pitch, Pine Mountain Road, Pine Mountain - 15 July 2018 15km - Fernvale Futures Centre to Cricket Pitch, Pine Mountain Road, Pine Mountain - 15 July 2018 If interested see Gavin. GREAT OCEAN ROAD TREK 2018 This year the walk is from 18-24 October 2018, with similar format to previous years. Day 1-18 October - fly to Tullamarine (Melbourne) Airport. Conveyed to Bimbi Park, Cape Otway by bus. 7

Day 2-19 October - walk Apollo Bay to Blanket Bay - about 22 km - conveyed to and from Bimbi Park Day 3-20 October - walk Blanket Bay to Bimbi Park via Cape Otway - about 16 km - conveyed to Blanket Bay Day 4-21 October - walk Bimbi Park to Johanna Beach via Station Beach and Rainbow Falls - about 18km - conveyed to Bimbi Park Day 5-22 October - walk Milanesia Gate to Moonlight Head - 24 km - conveyed to and from Bimbi Park PILGRIMAGE 2018 Plans are now underway for the planning of the Pilgrimage 2018 being held at Jimna 28 September 2018 to 01 October 2018, in association with Sunshine Coast Bushwalkers Club Inc. Quite a number of walks have been identified, including new ones from the locals, so please think about being a leader. The club is programmed to have a few camps in the lead up and the owner of the Jimna Base Camp has offered free camping to do recess etc. APOLOGIES FOR LATE PUBLICATION Please accept my apologies for the late publication of this newsletter and the walk calendar.
