edia Information Media Relations Department 198 Union Avenue Memphis, Tennessee 38103 Phone: 901.722.0293 www.memphisredbirds.com @memphisredbirds Memphis Redbirds (40-26) vs. Colorado Springs Sky Sox (38-26) Friday, June 16 7:05 p.m. (CT) AutoZone Park (10,000) Memphis, Tennessee Game #67 Home Game #34 (20-13) RHP John Gant (0-1, 3.12) vs RHP Angel Ventura (1-0, 3.00) THE GAME TODAY S GAME: The top two teams in the American Conference wrap up a four-game series as Memphis welcomes in Colorado Springs (Brewers) for the final time this year. The two teams have been out of first place for a combined three days this year. Today s game will be broadcast live on Sports56/87.7 FM and internet webcast at MemphisRedbirds.com, with Steve Selby on the call. ON THE HILL: John Gant starts this evening for Memphis in his fifth appearance with the Redbirds. Since joining the squad, Gant has been held on a strict pitch count, and thus tied his season-high with 5.0 innings pitched in his last start. He allowed two homers to Nashville on Saturday, but struck out seven without a walk. It marked the first outing for Gant since returning from a brief stint with the Cardinals in which he made one appearance at Cincinnati. Angel Ventura makes his second start of the year with the Sky Sox in the series finale. Ventura has spent a majority of the season with Double-A Biloxi and is getting his first taste of Triple-A. His lone start in the PCL came on May 17 vs El Paso, a win in which he allowed two runs on seven hits in six innings. His last appearance, though, came with Biloxi on Sunday against Jacksonville when he allowed seven runs on two hits and six walks in 2.1 innings. SCHEDULE WITH COLORADO SPRINGS: The Sky Sox become the first team Memphis has played three times this season after Colorado Springs won five of eight matchups over an 11-day stretch in April. This is the final trip to AutoZone Park for the Sky Sox this season and the only series until the two teams finish the season against one another at Security Service Field from September 1-4. The teams split the season series 8-8 last year. BIRD BITES THIS DATE IN REDBIRDS HISTORY (June 16, 2007): CF Rick Ankiel went 4-for-5 with three home runs and accumlated 13 total bases in a 7-5 win at Iowa. THE SEASON ABOUT THE LAST ONE: The Redbirds offense was stymied by Taylor Jungmann, recording only three hits prior to a ninth-inning rally in a 6-2 setback. Patrick Wisdom was perfect at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a double and two RBI. Mike Mayers suffered the loss by allowing three unearned runs on a two-out homer in the top of the fifth inning. FOR THE RECORD: - The Redbirds are tied for the best record through 66 games in franchise history, equaling the 2000 team (40-26) - A win today would give Memphis its earliest 41st victory in terms of games (67) in franchise history - A win today would tie for the earliest 41st win by date (June 16, 2000) in franchise history - The Redbirds are one of 9 teams in MiLB with 40+ wins RUN, RUN, RUNAWAY: The Redbirds are 30-for-56 in steal attempts this year, recently moving above a 50% success rate for the first time all year. Memphis has attempted 15 steals in the last 16 games and has been successful in 13 of the 15 tries. CHANGE IN CULTURE: Over the course of the season, the Redbirds have had to refine their approach in order to keep winning games. After leading the league in home runs in April (29), the Birds now sit tied for 11th in homers in June (15). Meanwhile, the pitching staff, which ranked 10th in the league in ERA in April (4.54), rose to second in May (3.84) and is second once again in June (2.95). START ME UP: Memphis prospect-laden rotation has rounded into form nicely, allowing three earned runs or fewer in 18 straight games. In the stretch, Redbird starters have tossed 10 quality starts and compiled a 3.00 ERA (33 ER in 99 IP). During the 17 games, opponents are hitting.223 (82-for-367) vs Memphis starters. The starters season-long ERA has dropped from 4.28 to 3.92 during the stretch. NOTHING FOR YOU: Needless to say, the Redbirds pitching staff as a whole has turned the corner recently. Memphis has held its opponent to four runs or less in 12 of the last 18 games, going 11-7 in the stretch. The Redbirds have yielded only 47 earned runs in the last 155 innings pitched (2.73 ERA), vaulting to second in the league in ERA (3.91). RETURN OF THE MASH: On Wednesday, Memphis hit six homers in a game for the first time since blasting seven vs Round Rock in 2009, increasing the season-total to 73 (6th in the PCL). Yesterday snapped a streak of five-straight games with at least one home run for the Redbirds, one shy of the season-best mark (6, April 8-13). As a result, Memphis dropped to 12-15 on the year when they do not hit at least one home run. MEMPHIS MASHERS: Luke Voit connected on his second multi-homer game of the season (4/28 vs Round Rock) and paired up with Paul DeJong for the Redbirds fourth set of back-to-back jacks this year on Wednesday afternoon. Memphis is way ahead of its pace from a season ago when the squad did not hit its 73rd homer until game 93, which came on July 17. The Redbirds have already hit 39 homers at AutoZone Park this season after blasting 51 in Memphis all of last year. BUSTIN LOOSE: After a six-game stretch from June 5-10 in which the Redbirds failed to score more than four runs in a game, the offense has erupted in the last four outings. Memphis has scored 29 runs on 44 hits in its last 37 innings, hitting.301 as a team (44-for-146). Twenty-one of the 44 hits have gone for extra bases, as the Birds have set new season-highs in doubles (6, Sunday) and homers (6, Wednesday). IN A PINCH: After starting the year by going 5-for- 24 (.208), Redbirds pinch-hitters are 12-for-theirlast-25 (.480) over the last 28 games. Overall, pinchhitters are 17-for-49 (.347) on the season. Nine different players have recorded a pinch hit, led by Chad Huffman s four knocks. STREAK RESISTENT: Since winning a franchiserecord 11 games in a row from April 28 - May 8 to improve to 21-11, the Redbirds have played about.500 baseball. Memphis is 19-15 since May 9, winning no more than three games in a row. Conversely, Memphis has lost back-to-back games only three times during the stretch. GOING EXTRA TIME: The Redbirds played in their sixth extra-inning game of the season on Sunday and remained undefeated in such affairs. Memphis is one of two PCL teams that remain unbeaten in extra-inning games (Colorado Springs 3-0), while the six wins are the most in the circuit. The Birds have outscored the opposition 10-1 in extras this year. STOP HITTING ME: Harrison Bader was plunked yesterday, continuing an interesting trend for Memphis hitters. The Birds have now been hit 45 times, which is far and away the most in the PCL (Sacramento, 27). Todd Cunningham has now been hit 11 times this year, which is the most in the PCL. STARTING OUT QUICK: The Redbirds have scored 46 runs in the first inning and 35 runs in the second inning of games, outscoring the opposition 81-45 in the game s first two frames. Memphis has scored first in 41 of its 66 games this season, which is the most in the PCL. However, the Redbirds are just 26-15 overall in those contests, which is middle of the pack in the league. The Redbirds have scored the game s final run 33 times and are 25-8 (1st in the PCL) in such games. AMONG THE ORGANIZATION: The Redbirds pepper the Cardinals minor league affiliate leaderboard in multiple categories: - AVG: Voit (.326, 2nd), Bader (.293, 5th), Kelly (.290, 7th), & Martini (.280, 9th) - HR: Wisdom (12, t-2), Voit (12, t-2), & Bader (10, 5th) - RBI: Voit (46, 1st), Wisdom (40, 2nd) - SB: Tovar (8, t-4) - Wins: Flaherty (8, 1st) & Weaver (6, t-3) - ERA: Flaherty (1.66, 2nd) - Saves: Herget (5, t-2) - Strikeouts: Flaherty (85, 1st) & Mayers (61, t-3) MEMPHIS PLAYERS AND COACHES PINCH-COACHING: Manager Stubby Clapp will be away from the team for the next five games beginning tonight as part of organization-approved coaches leave. Stepping in during the next five days will be St. Louis Cardinals field coordinator Mark DeJohn. A baseball lifer, DeJohn managed in the Cardinals and Tigers minor-league system for 16 years. He was Tony LaRussa s bullpen coach for four Cardinals campaigns and bench coach for two. The St. Louis Cardinals additionally announced a series of staff shake-ups June 9, which included Redbirds hitting coach Mark Budaska being moved to St. Louis to fill in as assistant hitting coach during Bill Mueller s leave of absence. In his place, Redbirds hitters are coached by George Greer, who is St. Louis offensive strategist. A 50- year veteran of baseball, Greer was drafted by the Cardinals in 1968 and has coached at the collegiate and professional ranks since 1972. VOIT OF APPROVAL: Luke Voit has rounded back into form after his first slump of the season. The slugger has hit safely in 12 of his last 14 games, anchored by a five-game hitting streak. He is hitting.339 (19-for-56) in the stretch with five doubles, four homers, eight runs scored, and 17 RBI. All four dingers and 11 of the 17 RBI have come in the last five games (10-for-22,.455, 4 HR, 5 R, 11 RBI). Additionally, he already has 21 doubles this season, surpassing his season total from a year ago (set in 134 games), and tying his career-high (21 in 93 games with High-A Palm Beach in 2014). BADER BOMBS: Outfielder Harrison Bader has seen his offensive numbers take off in June, highlighted by a pair of three straight multi-hit games (June 2-5, June 11-14). In the month, Bader is hitting a season-best.340 (18-for-53) while also setting new season-highs in OBP (.375), SLG (.566), OPS (.941), doubles (6) and RBI (11) in just 13 games. He s also scored seven runs and added two homers. A NEW SHERRIFF IN TOWN: Ryan Sherriff has been one of the most heavily used relievers in the PCL this season, appearing in 27 games, tied for third most in the Pacific Coast League. The southpaw has allowed runs in only six of his outings, and has allowed just one run in his last 15.2 frames. Six of the 11 runs Sherriff has allowed this year came in one outing at Colorado Springs on April 19. Aside from that, Sherriff has a 1.57 ERA (5 ER/28.2 IP). WEEK OF THE TRANSACTIONS: The transaction page has been busy for the Redbirds this week with 10 roster moves affecting the squad. Sam Tuivailala and Marco Gonzales were promoted to St. Louis on Tuesday and were joined today by Paul DeJong, who had just returned to Memphis on Tuesday. To fill the vacated spots, Josh Zeid was activated from the temporary inactive list, Sean Gilmartin was claimed from New York and optioned to Memphis, Alex Mejia joined the club today from Double-A Springfield, and Gonzales was optioned back. Additionally, Zach Phillips was released Monday and Bruce Caldwell was transferred to Double-A Springfield yesterday. KEEPING THINGS ROSY: Reserve catcher Alberto Rosario has not let his sporadic playing time affect his time at the plate recently, turning into an RBI machine since mid-may. Starting on May 15, Rosario has hit safely in nine of the 10 games that he has appeared in (11-for-37,.297, 3 2B, 4 R, 12 RBI). Rosario did not have a multi-hit game or an RBI prior to this stretch but now has a pair of two-hit games and four multi-rbi outings, highlighted by three RBI s against Nashville on Sunday. PROSPECTING: The Cardinals organization has seen a steady growth in its prospect ranking the last three years, elevating from 15th to 14th to 12th this season, according to Baseball America. While top prospect Alex Reyes is sidelined for the season, six of the top 30 prospects tabbed by the publication are currently on the Redbirds roster. That includes Luke Weaver (#2), Carson Kelly (#4), Harrison Bader (#7), Jack Flaherty (#11), John Gant (#27) and Breyvic Valera (#29). THE ROSTER: Of the 25 players who comprise Memphis active roster, 22 appeared at Triple-A last season, be it with Memphis or another organization. Of those who played at Triple-A, 15 donned a Redbirds uniform. Additionally, the roster is full of MLB experience with 11 players combining for 695 games played. Nearly half of that MLB experience (328/695) comes from Randal Grichuk, who was added to the roster last Thursday.
