VIRGINIA DISTRICT 7 SCORE KEEPER AND ANNOUNCER S BOOK SOFTBALL (Updated June 12, 2017)

SCORE KEEPER AND ANNOUNCER S BOOK TABLE OF CONTENTS SECTION PAGE(S) Little League Pledge and Game 3 Schedule Announcer Responsibilities 4-6 Announcer Game Sheets 7 Scorekeeper Responsibilities 8-9 Game Summary Sheets 10 NOTE Host league should ensure they have multiple copies of the Announcer Game Sheets (page 7) and the Game Summary Sheets (page 10). You will need to have one per each game played. 2

LITTLE LEAGUE PLEDGE (Have the players recite before each game) I TRUST IN GOD I LOVE MY COUNTRY AND WILL RESPECT ITS LAWS I WILL PLAY FAIR AND STRIVE TO WIN BUT WIN OR LOSE I WILL ALWAYS DO MY BEST THE LITTLE LEAGUE PARENT/VOLUNTEER PLEDGE (Only read when directed by the Tournament Director) I will teach all children to play fair and do their best I will positively support all managers, coaches and players I will respect the decisions of the umpires I will praise a good effort despite the outcome of the game 3

GAME ANNOUNCER RESPONSIBILITIES 1. The National Anthem will be played for the first game of the day only. The Little League Pledge will be read before every game. 2. Introduce each batter as they come to bat or any changes in the lineup. Do not be a Play by Play announcer. 3. The 50/50 raffle is a league option. If your tournament director decides to do a 50/50 raffle for your game, make an announcement at the end of the 1 st inning that the 50/50 raffle will be starting soon. 4. In between the top and bottom of the 2 nd inning, read one of the following prepared umpire announcements. a. It takes many adult volunteers to give our young men and ladies the opportunity to play Little League Baseball and Softball. These volunteers include Managers, Coaches, League Officials, field maintenance, concession stand workers, and of course announcers and scorekeepers. However, no little league volunteer works harder than the volunteer umpire does. All too often, they do not receive the recognition they deserve. They endure boos and words that are not always complementary. And yet for the love of the game and the love of the children they keep coming back. So next time you see an umpire, express your appreciation for the job he is doing, and to those on the field today, Thank you. b. The Little League Umpire is a rare individual. He gives up his evenings and weekends, works in dirty, hot and sometimes hostile conditions. And he does it for free. Thanks umps. We don t always give you the recognition you deserve, but we know we couldn t enjoy this great game of Little League Baseball or Softball without you. c. Little League is an organization run almost entirely by volunteers. All are important in their various positions but none is more important than the umpire is. The game cannot be played without them. THANKS UMPS. 5. If your league is conducting a 50/50 raffle during the game, read one of the following announcements at the end of the 2 nd inning. a. Although most of you here today would agree that there is no better entertainment than Little League Baseball and Softball, there are no admission charges to District 7 tournament games. There are, however, many expenses associated with presenting these events. At this time we have asked volunteers to assist with the 50/50 s. Please be as generous as you can. The funds collected at these tournament games help cover the expenses such as pins and championship flags for the players, printing, 4

postage, and operating costs for the tournaments. Thank you for your contributions. Please be as generous as you can. Thank you. b. As all of you are probably aware, there is never an admission charge to a District 7 Little League tournament game. However, there are numerous expenses incurred when staging an event such as this. At this time, we have asked volunteers to do a 50/50 raffle. PLEASE BE AS GENEROUS AS YOU CAN. THANK YOU. c. Although there is never an admission charge to a District 7 Little League game there are many expenses to put on these exciting tournaments. At this time we have asked volunteers to do a 50/50 PLEASE HELP AS MUCH AS YOU CAN. THANK YOU. SUGGESTION Use the longer version at the first round games and the shorter versions later. Use number 4 near the end of the tournament for teams that have played several games. 6. At the end of the 3 rd inning, promote the host leagues concession stand and any other items they may be selling. 7. (4 th inning) If you are doing the 50/50 raffle, make another announcement that volunteers are going around one more time for the 50/50 raffle. Please dig deep and help support YOUR LEAGUE NAME HERE Little League. 8. At the end of the 5 th inning, make an announcement to check the D7 web site for all tournament information. 9. In the middle of the last inning, announce the winner of the 50/50 raffle if conducted. 10. At the end of the game, give the date, time, location and opponent for each team (if known at that time). 11. Elimination Games Unfortunately, only one team per division will be a District 7 Champion. When a team has been eliminated from tournament play, they should be recognized on the field after the game. After both teams have shaken hands, the announcer will ask both teams to line up on their specific base lines. The announcer will announce only the eliminated team by name starting with the Manager, coaches then players. As each member is announced, District Staff and/or the Tournament Coordinator will present participation pins to the eliminated team member. Parents should be allowed to come on the field to take pictures. 12. Championship Games Will follow the same procedures as outlined in #15 above for the eliminated team. After the eliminated team receives its participation 5

pins, the championship team will then be presented with participation pins and their championship medallions. After all team members have been announced, the team is presented the District 7 championship banner. Parents should be allowed to come on the field to take pictures. 13. NOISE MAKERS (make this announcement only if directed by the tournament staff) Noise makers are not permitted at District 7 Tournament games. Thank you for your cooperation. 6

Scorekeeper Responsibilities Softball Only 1. Familiarize yourself with current rules and regulations governing tournament play. 2. Enter full name, uniform number and position of each player from the team line up card into the official scorebook. If you have any questions, contact the manager for clarification. Do not let the game start until everything in the score book is correct. 3. Enter the names of the starting pitchers on the back of the tournament affidavit. 4. Softball does not have a pitch count requirement. Softball pitchers are allowed to pitch a certain number of innings per day. Those inning amounts are as follows: 9-10, 10-11 and Major Can pitch a maximum of 12 innings in one day. If a pitcher pitches more than 6 innings in one day, one calendar day of rest is required. Junior, Senior and Big No pitching restrictions apply during the tournament season. NOTE - One pitch is considered having pitched 1 inning. 5. At the completion of the game, enter all the pitchers covered under Item #4 and #5 on the affidavit along with the information requested in each. 6. Maintain a record (inning and time) of Manager / Coaches defensive time out and trips to the mound. The Offensive team is allowed 1 time out per inning. The Defensive team Manager or Coach is allowed to come out twice in one inning to visit with the same pitcher. The third time out in one inning and the pitcher must be removed. A Manager may make 3 trips to the mound in a game but on the 4 th trip to the mound with the same pitcher, the pitcher must be removed. This applies to each pitcher. 7. At the end of the game, please fill out the attached game summary sheet. Information on this sheet will be used for the District 7 website and the Daily Press. Our goal is to get as many players recognized in the Daily Press as possible. That goes to all teams that win or lose games. NOTE When scoring plays where you are not sure whether it was a HIT or ERROR, lean toward scoring a hit. This will help you when you are trying to list game standouts for the Game Summary sheet at the end of the game. 8

An example of the Game Summary sheet is below. GAME SUMMARY Score Defensive Innings Visitor Phoebus 6 5 Home York Co. 8 6 Winning Pitcher J. Brown (DO NOT LIST THE LOSING PITCHER) STANDOUTS List 3 to 4 players on each team. Even if a team doesn t do very much offensively, list a player or two that walked or reached base on an error.
