SAILING INSTRUCTIONS 1. AGREEMENT TO ASSUME RISK: In consideration of being permitted to enter this regatta and being fully knowledgeable of the risks of sailing as a competitive sport, all competitors, crew members and guests aboard voluntarily assume all risks associated with participating in this regatta. Competing boats shall in all respects be ready for sea and sailed by an adequate and capable crew. It shall be the sole and inescapable responsibility of the skipper and crew of the boat to decide whether to start or continue a race. The skipper must assure that all equipment required by the United States Coast Guard, as well as other necessary safety equipment, is aboard and properly maintained and stowed and that the crew knows where it is kept and how it is used. 2. RULES AND MANAGEMENT: The races shall be under the management of the GLYC Race Committee which shall have the authority to establish the racing conditions and interpret the racing rules. Except as modified by these instructions, the race shall be governed by the Rules as defined in Racing Rules of Sailing for 2009-2013 ( RRS ). These include the prescriptions of the United States Sailing Association ( US SAILING ), the Notice of Race and these Sailing Instructions. 3. ENTRY: This regatta is open to all sail yachts whose owners hold membership in the Great Lakes Yacht Club and to other yachts upon invitation of the Race Committee. Eligible yachts shall be properly registered with the Race Committee by completing the registration application form and submitting it with the appropriate race fees in accordance with the registration application instructions. 4. NOTICES TO COMPETITORS / CHANGES IN SAILING INSTRUCTIONS: Notices to competitors will be posted on the official regatta notice board which is located next to the business office in the Great Lakes Yacht Club clubhouse. Changes in sailing instructions, class splits and starting times will be posted by the Friday before the first race, may also be available at the GLYC gate and will be available on the GLYC web site. 5. IDENTIFICATION: Yachts shall carry proper sail numbers on mainsails, spinnakers, and sails attached to the head stay which equal or exceed 130% of the "J" measurement. Any yacht which does not have proper sail numbers on its sails must display her sail number on a white background with black numbers that are at least 18 inches high and visible from both sides of the yacht. Yachts without proper display of sail numbers may be subject to protest. 6. MEASUREMENT AND RATINGS: Participating yachts will be rated in accordance with the latest measurements and PHRF ratings assigned by the Detroit Regional Yacht Racing Association (DRYA). Those yachts which do not possess PHRF certificates issued by the DRYA shall be assigned ratings by the race committee consistent with current DRYA policy. 7. HEADSAIL USE, RATING ADJUSTMENT & RESTRICTIONS: Headsail Usage- MULTI-SAIL PLAN All PHRF boats will race using the Multi-Sail option. If a boat intends to race in a sail configuration different from the boat s base rating configuration, the boat shall notify the RC as soon as possible upon arrival at its designated starting area but no later than its Warning Signal via VHF radio of the Multi-Sail configuration it will race in. The boats rating for the designated regatta will be adjusted to the appropriate offset rating accordingly. RATING ADJUSTMENT FOR SPINNAKER/HEADSAIL USAGE If a symmetrical spinnaker is flown at any time during the race, the boat s primary rating will be used as the rating for that race. A boat whose primary rating is based on the use of an asymmetrical spinnaker (i.e., sprit boats J105, J120, etc) will not be eligible for the six (6) second rating credit for an asymmetrical spinnaker, but will receive the full twelve (12) second rating credit if they choose to sail JAM only for the entire race. If an asymmetrical spinnaker is used without a pole the boat will receive a six (6) second rating credit. HEADSAIL RESTRICTIONS Headsails must be flown hanked to the headstay or in the headstay groove. Whisker and spinnaker poles may be used on headsails. Neither whisker nor spinnaker poles may be used with asymmetrical spinnakers. 8. SCORING: Individual races will be scored according to their corrected time using a time on time basis. The Windward/Leeward races will be scored with first place receiving 1 Point, second place 2 points and so on.

The Com. Ed Theisen Trophy Race will be counted as 2 races increasing the importance of this race in the series. One race in the series may be discarded if 3 or more races are completed. 9. EXCEPTIONS: Class splits listed by ratings are subject to exceptions for individual yachts as officially determined by the race committee. 10. RADIO MONITORING: Yachts shall monitor Channel 71 while racing. 11. COURSE LOCATION: Windward/Leeward starting area will be.75 NM (approx.) downwind of the Center of the DRYA A Course. The center of the A Course circle bears approximately 039 magnetic, 5.9 nm from Peche Island Range Rear Light (F 115ft PA). The Com. Ed Theisen Trophy Race starting area will be the center of the A Course circle the approximate location is 42 26.2 N 082 50.7 W. 12. STARTING & FINISHING LINES: The starting line on the course will be between the orange shape on the Starting Line Signal Boat and the water s edge of an Orange pyramid buoy. The finishing line shall be between the orange shape on a Race Committee boat and the water s edge of a nearby mark. 13. COURSE: Windward/Leeward; marks shall be passed to port. Course Length: No later than the warning signal for the first start the committee boat will display the approx. distance to the 1 st mark. The number of legs to be sailed for each class will be designated on the Scratch Sheet. The Com. Ed Theisen Trophy Race: If a GREEN flag is displayed on the Committee Boat proceed to the LSSC M Mark N42 30.220 W82 48.990 rounding to Starboard then to The ComET-1 mark (an Orange inflated mark) N42 29.065 W082 45.373 then to the finish. If a RED flag is displayed on the Committee Boat proceed to ComET-1 mark N42 29.065 W082 45.373 rounding to Port then to LSSC M Mark N42 30.220 W82 48.990 then to the finish. Course length approx. 12NM 14. SHORTEN COURSE for Windward/Leeward courses A. Prior to the start The race committee boat shall display a Code Flag "A": Sail to the first mark passing it on the port side, then directly back to the finish. B. After the start 1. When a race committee boat (identified by its display of a flag with the letters "RC") in the vicinity of a mark displays the following signals, Code flag J : Sail around the mark (leaving it on the designated side) and then directly to the finish. 2. When a race committee boat (identified by its display of a flag with the letters "RC") in the vicinity of a mark displays the following signals, Code flag "S": Finish the race by sailing between the nearby course mark and the Race Committee boat which is displaying this flag. The race committee may announce the shortened race by radio broadcast. 15. SHORTEN COURSE for The Ed Theisen Trophy Race: Sail to the first mark and back to the finish. 16. CLASS SPLITS (STARTING TIMES): Class splits will be determined based on entries received. (A code flag for the class number designating the start of each class will be displayed from the starting line Race Committee boat during the five minute period preceding the start of that class). 17. START Races will be started using RRS 26 and number flags designated in Final Class Split. The raising of the class flag for the first start on the Course will be at 1055 hours. Attention Signal The Race Committee will make a series of short sound signals approximately one minute before the first class flag is raised.

Order and Number of Starts Classes will start in the order in which they are listed in Final Class Split. However, the Race Committee may eliminate the starting sequence for a class if no boats from the class are in the starting area or registered. Watch for your class flag! Class Designation Classes will be designated by numbers 1, 2, 3, 4 etc. Starts will be by number flags on the Race Committee boat. Starting Sequence 6 Min Repetitive Sound (Horn) Attention Sound first start only 5 Min Gun Class #1 Flag is raised 4 Min Gun Prep P Flag is raised (White w/blue Square) 1 Min Horn Prep P Flag is lowered 1 st Start Gun Class #1 Flag is lowered, Class #2 Flag is raised. Repeat Sequence for rest of classes. SCORING will be TIME on TIME Final splits to be posted by the Friday before the first race at GLYC 18. COMMITTEE BOAT PROTECTION MARK: There may be a protection mark (inflatable buoy, green) approximately 50 feet from the committee boat. If a yacht touches this limit mark, the committee boat, or passes between this mark and the committee boat, she shall have, in effect touched a mark. 19. RECALL: Code Flag "X" shall be displayed to signal an individual Recall in accordance with Rule 29.2. In addition to the requirements of the Rule, the Race Committee may: hail, or announce on VHF channel 71, sail numbers of yachts subject to individual recall. (A sound signal may be given for each yacht over early.) An attempt may be made to notify returning yachts when they are clear to start. 20. PROTEST: A yacht to protest another shall: 1. Display at the first reasonable opportunity and continue to fly conspicuously in her rigging, a red flag. 2. At the first reasonable opportunity, inform the yacht to be protested and inform the Race Committee at the finish line, when finishing. 3. Submit a written protest in accordance with IRYU /US Sailing Rules to the Race Committee within one hour of finishing. 4. Protests will be heard after the race at the GLYC clubhouse. The race committee will inform the parties of the time. 5. Anyone involved in a protest that does not appear at the hearing will have the protest heard without their presence. 21. PENALTIES: Penalties for breaking rules of Part 2 (When Boats Meet) may be resolved per Rule 44. 22. TIME LIMIT: Windward/Leeward: The time limit for each class (measured from its starting signal) shall be two and a half hours (2.5). Com. Ed Theisen Trophy Race: The time limit shall be three and a half hours (3.5) 23. WITHDRAWALS: Participants withdrawing from the race are required to notify the Race Committee via VHF radio (Channel 71) or telephone (586-778-9510) at their earliest opportunity. Failure to notify the Race Committee may preclude acceptance of entry in subsequent GLYC sponsored events. 24. INTERFERENCE WITH SHIPPING: When crossing the shipping channel, yachts are forbidden to interfere with major ships (Federal Law 89-764). Any yacht violating this injunction shall be subject to protest and disqualification. All participants are hereby notified that no restriction is placed on the use of the water by other parties. Participants shall adhere to U.S.C.G. Rule 18 which read in part "(b) A sailing vessel underway shall keep out of the way of: (ii) a vessel restricted in her ability to maneuver."

25. AWARDS: All participants are invited to the Great Lakes Yacht Club following the each race for food and drinks. Refreshments will commence at approximately 3:00 PM, awards for each race will be presented A.S.A.P. A special trophy will be awarded to the overall winner of the Com.
