P a g e 4 Duncan Golf & Tennis Club Newsletter Superintendent s Corner I hope every one of you had a wonderful year last year. It s always nice to spend time away from work for the Holidays and spend it with friends and family. It s a new year and we here at The Duncan Golf and Tennis Club Improvements Shop are ready to go! We are eager to continue improving this course daily while maintaining the conditions you have come to expect from us. We finally got some snow but unfortunately with snow comes moisture and we didn t need that for sure. The entire golf course is saturated from all of the moisture the last few weeks. I heard a member say we might lift the cart path only signs on July 5 th. Wrong!! It will be July 4 th, I play in that tournament and I m not walking. Please be diligent with carts on the course until we dry up. Believe it or not there are wet spots on the high ground. Some of the slopes are even sloppy. If everyone will do their part it will help. It is that time of year when we spray the entire golf course with pre-emergent. Pre-emergent is a weed control chemical that helps us minimize weed populations on the course. I am getting a little concerned about being able to get the sprayer into some of the wetter areas. We will start up around the clubhouse and work out from there. You will see green dye in the areas we have sprayed. Thank you all for your continued support, we love our members! See you out there, Daniel Mills, GCS
P a g e 5 Tips from the Pros In golf, your instincts can get you into trouble. A good example is when you have a long putt. The tendency is to think you have to hit the ball harder than normal. That mind-set leads to a short backstroke and a fast flick on the downstroke. The result is usually poor contact and a putt that never gets to the hole. A better technique is to lengthen your backstroke but keep the pace of the motion the same. That produces more energy at impact the longer stroke gives you smooth acceleration and a better chance of catching the ball flush. It's just like trying to get more distance on a full shot: Hitting the ball in the middle of the clubface is the best thing you can do to transfer energy into the ball. And the best way to lose energy? You guessed it make a wild swing and mis-hit the shot. To become a good lag putter, you might have to reconsider the way you think about the stroke. If you believe you should lock your arms and hands and simply rock your shoulders, you're going to struggle from long distance. Lag putts require some play in the elbows and wrists. I'm not saying you should purposely hinge them, but you should let them react naturally to the motion. Lock those joints, and you can only make so much swing. If you would like more help with this come by the golf shop and ask YOUR golf professionals! Golf Shop Sales January All in-stock apparel buy one get one 75% off!
