The Tide beat New Mexico (4-1) in the quarterfinals and then dispatched of Georgia Tech in the semifinals. The clinching holes were almost simultaneous on the 15th and 16th. Junior Cory Whitsett halved the par-3 15th hole for a 4 and 3 victory and only seconds later senior Scott Strohmeyer won the difficult par-4 16th hole with par for a 3 and 2 win. Whitsett, playing in the last group, jumped out to an early lead with the three middle parings locked in a battle for the three points needed to win the match. Strohmeyer battled Illinois Brian Campbell in another hotly contested match. He fell behind on the 11th hole but quickly got back to all square with a birdie on the par-5 12th. After halving the 13th with a long par putt, Strohmeyer won three straight holes to close out the match, 3 and 2. Trey Mullinax was the in the second paring and locked in a battle with Charlie Danielson. The back-and-forth match went to the 18th hole all square after six lead changes. Both players found their approach shots to the right of flag, leaving Mullinax a 60- foot putt while Danielson was chipping from off the green. Mullinax lagged to within three feet and sank his par putt for the 1-up win and Alabama s second point. Junior Bobby Wyatt staked the Tide to an early lead with an amazing front nine. The junior from Mobile, Ala., won the first seven holes and had a 6-up lead at the turn with five birdies. He closed the match out with an improbable chip-in for birdie on the 13th for a 6 and 5 win over Illinois Thomas Detry. The National Championship is the first in a men s sport outside of football in Alabama history. It is the Crimson Tide s 24th National Championship across all sports and its eighth title since 2009 (3 in football, 2 in women s gymnastics, 1 women s golf, 1 softball, 1 men s golf). Crimson Tide Boasts Four All-Americans The National Champion Alabama men s golf had four players selected to the 2012-13 Golfweek All-America team. Juniors Cory Whisett and Bobby Wyatt along with sophomore Justin Thomas were selected to the first team while junior Trey Mullinax as an honorable mention choice. It marks the first time Alabama has produced more than three All-Americans in one season and the first time it has had multiple first-team All-Americans in the same season. The Crimson Tide has now had at least one first-team All-American in six straight seasons (Michael Thompson, 2008; Bud Cauley, 2009-11; Thomas, 2012). Whitsett was also a first-team PING/GCAA All-American and the SEC Player of the Year. He finished with a team-best 71.08 scoring average. He is now a three-time All-American, garnering second-team accolades in 2011 and 2012. Thomas was the National Player of the Year in 2012 and becomes just the second two-time first-team All-American in school history (Bud Cauley, 2009-11). Wyatt is also now a three-time All-American. He was a second-team choice a season ago and an honorable mention selection in 2011. Mullinax captured his first All-America honor after averaging 72.77 strokes per round. Three Tide Golfers Earn SEC Postseason Awards Alabama junior Cory Whitsett was named the Southeastern Conference Men s Golfer of the Year. Head coach Jay Seawell was tabbed as the SEC Coach of the Year for the second straight season (third overall) after guiding the Crimson Tide to the program s fourth SEC Championship. Whitsett was also a tri-winner of the SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year and was a first-team All-SEC selection along with Justin Thomas and Bobby Wyatt. Trey Mullinax was named to the All-SEC second team. Alabama Sets New School Record with Eight Wins Alabama s NCAA Championship also gave the Crimson Tide its eighth team victory of the year, setting a new school record for wins in a season. The old record was six set in the 2007-08 season. The Crimson Tide also won six straight events to finish the year and seven of eight tournaments in the spring. The Tide picked up the first win of the season in the fall at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate at the Old Overton Club. Alabama opened the spring with a seven-shot win at the Puerto Rico Classic with a 33-under-par total. The win streak began with a title at the Schenkel Invitational where Justin Thomas captured medalist honors to set the school record with six career wins. UA then won the Linger Longer Invitational by 16 shots and followed with an 18-shot win at the Aggie Invitational. Alabama captured the school s fourth SEC Championship with a come-from-behind victory at Sea Island. The Crimson Tide also rallied at the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional for second straight regional title. Alabama finished tied for third in the stroke play portion of the NCAA Championships before reeling off match-play wins over New Mexico (4-1) and Georgia Tech (3-0-2) to set up a finals showdown with Illinois. The Tide won four-of-five matches to take down the Fighting Illini for the program s first National Championship. Alabama Wins SEC Championship The Alabama men s golf team battled through 30 mph winds on the challenging Seaside Course at the Sea Island Golf Club to hold off South Carolina for the program s fourth SEC Championship and second straight. The Crimson Tide began the final round three shots back of the Gamecocks and the two teams went back and forth throughout the day. The Tide sealed the win with a 10-over-par round of 290 to finish at 8-over 848 for the tournament. Cory Whitsett made birdie on the 16th for a four-shot swing that gave the Tide a lead they would not relinquish. The Tide s fourth SEC title and second straight. Trey Mullinax joined Whitsett with a 73 in round three to post a top-10 finish in ninth place at 3-over 213. Bobby Wyatt carded a 4-over 74 and tied for 10th at 4-over 214. Justin Thomas fired Alabama s lowest round of the day with an even-par 70 to tie for 12th place at 5-over 215. Alabama has been competing in the SEC Men s Golf Championship since the 1951 season. The Crimson Tide own three team titles, winning in 1979, 2008 and 2012. The Tide has also finished runner-up on six other occasions (1973, 76-77, 83, 2007, 11). Alabama has also had three players earn medalist honors, beginning with Bobby Hill in 1951. Michael Thompson then won in 2008 with Justin Thomas claiming the 2012 tournament. Alabama Wins NCAA Baton Rouge Regional The Alabama men s golf team shot the lowest score of the final round by six shots and overtook Florida to win the 2013 NCAA Baton Rouge Regional for the Crimson Tide s second straight regional championship and third overall. The Crimson Tide overcame an eight-shot deficit after 36 holes to beat the Gators by six strokes with a 6-under-par 282 in the final round for a 4-over-par total of 868. Senior Scott Strohmeyer won his first individual tournament title in the next-to-last event of his career. The Auburn, Ala., native carded a 3-under-par 69 in the final round to beat teammate Bobby Wyatt by two shots at 4-under 212. Alabama in the NCAAs Alabama s 2013 NCAA Championship came in the program s 15th appearance in the NCAA Championships. It was the Tide s second visit to the match play portion of the Championship and its second visit to the NCAA Match Play Finals. It was also the seventh visit to the NCAAs in the last nine years under the leadership of head coach Jay Seawell. UA s top finish under Seawell prior to the 2013 National Championship was a runner-up showing in 2012, losing to Texas on the last hole of match play by one shot. The Tide also posted a sixth-place showing in 2007. Prior to the NCAA Tournament switching to regional format in 1991, the Crimson Tide made five NCAA Finals appearances in 1973-75, 1981 and 1983 under head coach Rehling. Alabama has 22 total appearances (regionals and finals) in the NCAA men s golf tournament. The 1975 team, that featured Crimson Tide legend Jerry Pate, earned UA s best finish in that format with a tie for third place. Following Rehling s last trip in 1983, Alabama didn t make its return to the NCAA Finals until 1992 when Spybey s squad finished 11th. Following trips to the NCAA Finals in 1993 and again in 1996, UA would not return for another eight years until Seawell s 2005 team advanced 2013 NCAA & SEC Champions out of the East Regional. The 2007 season marked the beginning of six trips to the NCAA Championships in seven years. Palmer Cup A contingent of three players and head coach Jay Seawell will lead the USA Team at the 2013 Palmer Cup, a Ryder Cup-style competition, between the world s best collegiate golfers from the United States and Europe at the Wilmington Country Club s South Course. Seawell will serve as the USA s head coach and the 10-man team will feature Crimson Tide golfers Cory Whitsett, Bobby Wyatt and Justin Thomas. The first day of action consists of a morning round of four-ball that is followed with an afternoon round of foursomes. The Saturday and Sunday rounds both consist of 10 singles matches. It is Thomas second Palmer Cup appearance and the first for Wyatt and Whitsett. The United States leads the Palmer Cup series 8-7-1. Europe staged a dramatic comeback last year s Palmer Cup in Newcastle, County Down, by winning seven of the final eight singles matches for a 13.5-10.5 win. Thomas & Wyatt Semifinalists for Ben Hogan Award Alabama junior Bobby Wyatt and sophomore Justin Thomas have been named as two of 10 semifinalists for the 2013 Ben Hogan Award. The Hogan is presented annually to the top men s NCAA Division I, II or III, NAIA or NJCAA college golfer taking into account all collegiate and amateur competitions during a 12-month period. Thomas has captured two medalist honors during his second year at the Capstone and has a 71.29 scoring average. He played for the victorious United States World Amateur team in Turkey this past fall and advanced to the semifinals of the 2012 U.S. Amateur. He is ranked fourth in the World Amateur Rankings. Wyatt boasts six top-five finishes in 11 events this season and was the medalist at the 2012 U.S. Amateur, advancing to the round of 16. He is currently rated No. 3 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings. Rankings Rundown All five Tide golfers in the top 60 of the final Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index with three among the top six. Junior Bobby Wyatt led the way at No. 3 with junior Cory Whitsett fourth and sophomore Justin Thomas sixth. Junior Trey Mullinax was 40th while Scott Strohmeyer is 60th. The final Golfstat Cup rankings had Whitsett 12th, Thomas 17th and Wyatt 21st. Crimson Tide under Seawell Head Coach Jay Seawell transformed Alabama in to perennial contender in his 11 years at the Capstone and capped that off with the program s first National Championship in 2013. Since taking the Crimson Tide to an NCAA Regional during his first year (2003), this year marks the 10th regional appearances in 11 years, including nine straight and the seventh NCAA Championships berth (2005, 07-09, 11-13). Alabama won the SEC Championship in 2013 for the second straight time and third overall under the guidance of Seawell. His 2012 team finished runner-up to Texas at the 2012 NCAA Championships. His teams have won 33 tournament titles over the last 11 years, including the 2009, 2012 and 2013 NCAA Regional titles. The Tide also finished first in the stroke-play portion of the 2012 NCAA Championships. UA won a school-record eight times in 2012-13. The Crimson Tide also set the school record with six straight wins and counting. 3

The six-regional format was started at the 2009 NCAA Championships and replaced the old three-regional system that began play in 1992 when the NCAA first instituted a regional format. Each of the six 2014 regional sites will qualify five teams for the NCAA Championship Finals, being held at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan., on May 27-June 1, 2014. Those 30 teams will then play 54 holes of stroke play, with the individual champion being declared at that point. The top-eight teams after the 54 holes of stroke play then will move on to match play and are seeded according to their finish in the strokeplay portion. The No. 1 team will face the No. 8 team, No. 2 will face No. 7, No. 3 vs. No. 6 and No. 4 vs. No. 5. The team that wins three rounds of match play will be crowned the national champion. Teams are selected for regional competition based upon their overall tournament finishes and head-tohead finishes against other teams that are in their region. Selection is made by a regional committee compromised of head coaches. From 1989 through the 2008 NCAA Championships, the finals consisted of 72 holes of play with a cut after 54 holes to the top-15 teams.
