River Cats Media Relations 400 Ballpark Drive West Sacramento, CA 95691 P: (916) 376-4751 F: (916) 376-4710 @RiverCats Tuesday, May 8 Raley Field West Sacramento, CA 7:05 p.m (PT) Game 32 Home Game 12 SACRAMENTO RIVER CATS (16-15, 2nd Pacific Northern) - vs - SALT LAKE BEES (20-11, 1st Pacific Southern) River Cats: RHP Casey Kelly (2-3, 9.25) Bees: RHP Keynan Middleton (0-0, No ERA) Yesterday s Game: The River Cats pulled closer to the the division-leading Fresno Grizzlies after winning the series finale 6-3, and winning the series three games to one. RHP Dereck Rodriguez had another strong outing throwing 5.2 innings of no-hit ball. Rodriguez finished with four hits, three walks, no earned runs, six striekouts, and most importantly: the win. Eight of the nine hitters in the starting lineup had at least one hit, and the River Cats scored three runs in the fourth inning to take a 3-0 lead. The Grizzlies battled back with two runs in the eighth, but C Ronnie Freeman crushed his first homer as a River Cat, a two-run shot and some much-needed insurance in the ninth inning to seal the victory. Today s Starter: RHP Casey Kelly (2-3, 9.25) looks to continue where he left off when he earned the win in his last start on May 3rd against Las Vegas. Kelly struck out five batters and only allowed two earned runs over six innings of work against the 51s. Before his last start, Kelly had experienced a run of three poor starts in a row in which he allowed 22 earned runs in 9.1 innings. Kelly is going for his his team-leading third win of the season tonight and he currently ranks fourth in strikeouts with 22 on the season. Kelly is a former first round draft pick in 2008 by the Boston Red Sox. Eury In the Outfield: Last night in Fresno, CF Eury Perez threw out Kyle Tucker with a one-hop strike to end the sixth inning. Perez now has four outfield assists in only twelve games played. Ironically, he is now tied with Tucker for third in the Pacific Coast League in that category. Timely Dingers: During the series with Fresno, the River Cats hit four home runs in the eighth inning or later. On Saturday, INF Orlando Calixte crushed a three-run bomb with two outs in the ninth inning to give Sacramento the lead. On Sunday INFs Ryder Jones and Kyle Jensen added insurance in the eighth, and again yesterday C Ronnie Freeman bolstered the River Cats lead with his first home run of the season late in the ballgame. D-Rod is Rolling: RHP Dereck Rodriguez has been stellar in his last three starts. Rodriguez currently leads the River Cats pitching staff with 29 strikeouts this season to go along with a 3.45 ERA in 31.1 innings pitched, both of which ranks first among Sacramento starting pitchers. Personnel Matters: The River Cats added RHP Nolan Riggs to their bullpen on Tuesday to fill out their 25-man active roster. Riggs has spent the first month of the season with the San Jose Giants, going 0-1 in 11 appearances, striking out 17 compared to nine walks in 18.2 innings. The young reliever stands six feet eight inches tall, and is one of the tallest players in the San Francisco Giants oranization. This Day in River Cats History: May 8, 2005: Behind a dominant outing from LHP John Rheinecker, the River Cats beat the host Las Vegas 51s 10-7...Rheinecker put together 7.1 innings of onerun ball, giving up just three hits and no walks while striking out five...improved his record to 4.0 while lowering his ERA to 1.77 through seven starts (45.2 innings)...of Jack Cust was 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI on the afternoon...inf Andrew Beattie doubled twice and tripled, driving in two and scoring three times on the night. ISO: Isolated Power Isolated Power (ISO) is a measure of a hitter s raw power. Or, to look at it another way, it measures how good a player is at hitting for extra bases. The simplest way to calculate ISO is to subtract a player s Batting Average from their Slugging Percentage, which leaves us with a measure of just a player s extra bases per at bat. BABIP: Batting Average on Balls In Play Batting Average on Balls In Play (BABIP) measures how many of a batter s balls in play go for hits. Affected greatly by defense and luck, BABIP can dramatically affect a hitter s batting average. If a large number of a batter s balls in play go for hits, that can boost their batting average quite high. Similarly, if a large number of balls in play get caught, it can reduce a player s total offensive value. wrc+: Weighted Runs Created Plus Weighted Runs Created Plus measures the total number of runs a player contributes to their team. The formula accounts for a player s ability to get on base, their total number of bases, and their baserunning. The Plus version of the stat is park and league adjusted. woba: Weighted On-Base Average Weighted On-Base Average combines all the different aspects of hitting into one metric, weighting each of them in proportion to their actual run value. While batting average, on-base percentage, and slugging percentage fall short in accuracy and scope, woba measures and captures offensive value more accurately and comprehensively. (Due to no constant in minor league baseball, the woba statistic is approximate). AVG: Batting Average Batting average is the rate of hits per at bat, calculated as hits/at bats. BABIP: Batting Average on Balls In PLay Batting Average on Balls In Play (BABIP) measures how often a ball in play goes for a hit. Typically around 30% of all balls in play fall for hits, but there are several variables that can affect BABIP rates for individual players, such as defense, luck, and talent level. Hitters have more control over their BABIP than pitchers do. LOB%: Left On Base Percentage Left on Base Percentage (LOB%) measures the percentage of base runners that a pitcher strands on base over the course of a season. This stat does not use the left on base numbers reported in box scores, but instead is calculated using a pitcher s actual hits, walks, and runs allowed results. FIP: Fielding Independent Pitching Fielding Independent Pitching (FIP) measures what a player s ERA should have looked like over a given time period, assuming that performance on balls in play and timing were league average. (Due to no constant in minor league baseball, the FIP statistic is approximate). K% & BB%: Strikeout Rate and Walk Rate Strikeout rate (K%) and walk rate (BB%) measure how often a pitcher walks or strikes out a player per plate appearance. They re measured in percentage form, so it s easy to compare between players and years. xfip: Expected Fielding Independent Pitching Same as FIP, but it normalizes a pitcher s home runs allowed based on their fly ball rate rather than simply using the raw number of home runs allowed. *Courtesy of Fangraphs.com PITCHING BREAKDOWN IP ER SO BB ERA W L Starters 150.0 79 128 74 4.73 10 9 Relievers 113.2 68 113 62 5.40 6 6 Totals 263.2 147 241 136 5.02 16 15
