Central and the 5 1/2-game lead over the Blue Jays for the best record in the American League. EARLY AND OFTEN--The Royals scored in each of the first five innings of last night s game, accruing all 12 of their runs in that span...it marked the first time KC has scored in each of the first five frames since July 4, 2000, when the Royals were 10-7 winners here over the White Sox. RUBBER GAME--Tonight is the 14th rubber game of the year for the Royals, first since a series deciding loss to these Tigers in Motown on August 6...Kansas City is 8-5 through the first 13 rubber games, including a solid 6-2 mark here...the last series deciding contest in The K was on July 26, a 5-1 win over Houston. VENTURA LOOKING LIKE AN ACE--Yordano Ventura continued his recent run of dominance last night, allowing just a run over a 7.0-inning stint en route to an easy 12-1 victory...it was his fifth consecutive quality performance in which he s allowed two or fewer runs in each of those outings...ventura has a 4-0 mark and 1.13 ERA in his last five assignments, while the team has gone 5-0, allowing only four earned runs in 32.0 innings, while the opposition is hitting only.174 (20-for-115)... Ace has fanned 43 in this stretch, including back-to-back 11-strikeout outings in his last two trips to the hill, a first for a KC hurler since Zack Greinke on April 18 & 24, 2009, when he fanned 10 in each. TWO OUTS???, NO PROBLEM--The Royals plated five of their dozen runs last night after two were out and continue to lead the Majors in two-out hitting with a.281 mark, which is 37 points better than the big league average (.244)...KC is slugging at a 436 clip, third best in the Majors, while leading the bigs with runners in scoring position and two away at.283...kc has plated 247 two-out runs, third most in the A.L...a season ago in 2014, Kansas City hit just.236 in two-out situations with 219 total runs...the Royals boast three of the top six individual two-out hitters with Lorenzo Cain (.392) leading the league, followed by Kendrys Morales (.343) in fifth and Eric Hosmer (.333), who is sixth...morales (61), Hosmer (59) and Cain (58) rank third, fourth and fifth, respectively in two-out hits...morales, who is third in the A.L. in overall RBI (94) has driven more than half of those in with two outs, leading the Majors with 51, shattering Joe Randa s (2000) previous club record of 46. SERIES WORK--A win in tonight s rubber game would extend Kansas City s unbeaten streak to eight consecutive series, as the club has gone 6-0 with a split in the last seven...over a longer period, the Royals are 12-3-1 in its last 16 sets...on the year, the Royals are 27-11 with five splits in the 43 series played...since June 7 when KC trailed by a game in the Central, the club has gone 51-28 for a 13-game turnaround in the standings...included in that stretch is a 28-11 record in The K. CHISOX NEXT--Tonight wraps up the first leg of this 3-team, 9-game homestand with Chicago hitting town for the weekend beginning tomorrow night...the Royals are 10-3 vs. the White Sox this year, including five straight wins and a 6-0 mark here in Kauffman Stadium...dating back to May 21, 2014, KC is 21-6 vs. Chicago, 9-1 here. BACK ON TRACK--Edinson was solid last Friday at The Trop, winning for the first time in his last four starts, 3-2 over the Rays..he held Tampa Bay to two runs (one earned) on six hits over 6.2 innings, recording two walks and five strikeouts, allowing single tallies in the second and third innings..after that, Edinson allowed just one hit over his final 3.2 scoreless frames...the outing was his sixth quality start since the All-Star break, while he s allowed one earned run or less in 12 of his 27 starts this season. TAKE ME TO YOUR LEADER--Volquez continues to be the Royals most consistent starting pitcher, entering tonight as the team leader in wins (12), innings pitched (165.1), strikeouts (124) and quality starts (15)...he s won eight games since June 10, which are tied for third-most in the A.L. in that span...volky has been one of the best in baseball over the last 15 months as since June 20, 2014, he has the fifth-best winning percentage (.724) in the Majors, going 21-8 with a 2.70 ERA, which are tied for eighth in that span. VS. DETROIT---Volky is looking for his first win of the year against Detroit, suffering defeat in his two previous starts...he took a 2-1 loss to then-tigers lefty David Price on May 2, while he was charged with five earned runs over 7.0 innings in a 7-4 setback here on August 12...Edinson is 1-4 with a 5.34 ERA all-time against Motown, earning the lone win with Pittsburgh, 4-2, on August 12, 2014. BACK AT HOME--Edinson has gone 7-3 with a 2.94 ERA (26 ER in 79.2 IP) in his 13 home starts this season...however, two of his three losses have come to these Tigers, including in his last home outing on August 12, when he suffered a 7-4 setback...volky s home ERA ranks 11th among qualifying A.L. hurlers...in his career, the righty is 41-34 with a 4.01 ERA and a.239 opponents average in 107 starts (111 outings) at his various home parks. DIVISIONAL WORK--Kansas City has a 33-20 record within the Central, as the club is now in a stretch in which 16 of 19 will be within the division...the Royals are 17-14 vs. the East with just a 3-game visit to Baltimore remaining (September 11-13 in Baltimore)...the Royals are 18-11 vs. the West, with just a 3-game series against Seattle left on the slate...kc has a 13-6 mark vs. the National League this year with one to go on September 28 in Chicago when the Royals and Cubs will make-up a May 30 rainout in Wrigley Field... dating back to the start of 2014, KC has the best Interleague record in the Majors at 28-11. vs. Tigers (2015) vs. Tigers (career) At Home (career) vs. Boyd (career) vs. Danks (career) Player AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI Butera.167 12 2 1 2.208 53 11 2 6.174 379 66 2 23 - - - - -.100 10 1 0 0 Cain.350 60 21 3 7.294 163 48 5 17.297 834 248 18 114.167 6 1 0 2.217 23 5 0 2 Colon.308 26 8 0 2.321 28 9 0 2.264 72 19 0 4 - - - - - - - - - - Cuthbert.667 3 2 1 4.667 3 2 1 4.381 21 8 1 8 - - - - - - - - - - Dyson.318 22 7 0 0.250 140 35 0 7.265 544 144 5 50 - - - - - - - - - - Escobar.220 50 11 1 5.231 321 74 4 27.263 1679 442 11 140.333 6 2 0 0.115 26 3 0 0 Gomes.500 2 1 0 0.218 87 19 2 18.239 1697 406 82 263 - - - - -.316 19 6 1 2 Gordon.321 28 9 0 5.236 415 98 15 48.274 2024 554 67 283 - - - - -.189 37 7 1 2 Gore.000 1 0 0 0.000 2 0 0 0.000 2 0 0 0 - - - - - - - - - - Hosmer.322 59 19 2 8.290 310 90 10 36.277 1291 358 35 171.500 6 3 0 0.290 31 9 0 2 Infante.217 46 10 0 7.256 125 32 2 19.265 2480 658 29 243.000 5 0 0 0.241 29 7 1 2 Morales.322 59 19 2 13.292 212 62 5 32.280 1527 428 67 253.667 6 4 0 2.207 29 6 0 2 Moustakas.171 41 7 1 5.200 265 53 4 17.245 1076 264 30 132.167 6 1 0 0.136 22 3 0 2 Orlando.304 23 7 0 0.304 23 7 0 0.288 111 32 3 15 - - - - -.200 5 1 0 0 Pena.000 0 0 0 0.000 0 0 0 0.000 1 0 0 0 - - - - - - - - - - Perez.366 41 15 2 8.308 221 68 7 33.283 915 259 26 133.200 5 1 0 0.160 25 4 2 3 Rios.250 16 4 0 2.269 409 110 11 49.287 3064 880 96 413.200 5 1 0 0.200 20 4 0 2 Zobrist.213 47 10 2 6.251 235 59 8 30.255 1997 509 58 255.600 5 3 0 0.130 23 3 0 1 Starting Pitchers Breakdown Total KC Avg.
