Tennis 1 st Team Back Row L-R: Carol Jordan, Miss O. Walker, Mr. Hamilton, Shirley Staunton Front Row L-R: Gwen Cavanagh, Dora Lumby, Gloria Farnsworth, Dilys Hughes This has been one of the best seasons for many years. We have won eight of the nine matches played, suffering our only defeat in the last match and that by a narrow margin. The highlight of the season was the match against Ackworth School, our old rivals, which we won after a very close struggle. With four members of this year's first team remaining, next season should prove even more successful. Colours were awarded to all members of the team in recognition of their good work: Gloria Farnsworth (Repeat Colours), Dora Lumby, Dilys Hughes, Gwen Cavanagh, Shirley Staunton, Carole Jordan. The first team has shown what can be achieved and I hope this is the first of many good seasons to come. Gloria D. Farnsworth (Captain)

Walker, Gwen Cavanagh, Carol Jordan, Gail Picken Front Row L-R: Dora Lumby, Ellen Toulson, Susan Butcher, Nora Carlile, Enid Ford Hockey 1st XI Report The 1958-59 season has been one of the most successful for many years. The team won seven matches, drew four and lost only two. We began the season with a substantial advantage as only four of last year's 1st XI had left. The newcomers, J. Leonard, E. Ford, D. Wood and G. Cavanagh soon settled down in their respective positions. In November, a party went to see the England v. Ireland match at Manchester. Although the visibility was poor, everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves. England won by seven goals to three. On December 6th the Wakefield and District Hockey Trials were held. The School was represented by N. Carlisle, M. Wright, C. Jordan, D. Lumby, S. Staunton and S. Butcher. No one was successful in the final selection. Owing to bad weather, the Christmas Staff v. Girls match was cancelled. The weather in the New Year also disrupted our fixture list - five matches were cancelled. The Hockey Rally, held at Hemsworth, was won by Ossett Grammar School who played in Section 2. The School team, playing in Section 1, was narrowly beaten by Percy Jackson's Grammar, but beat Pontefract High School by one corner after extra time. The match against Selby Grammar School, in this section, was close and exciting. Hemsworth was beaten after extra time. All members of the team are grateful to Miss Walker who has encouraged our efforts so enthusiastically throughout the season. We also thank Miss McGlade, Miss Harrison, Miss Hampshire, Mrs. Whittaker and Mrs. Lumb for helping with the Saturday fixtures. Susan I. Butcher, L.VI.R. (Captain) Individual Hockey Report N. CARLILE; (repeat colours) G. K. Has gained confidence this season. Her keen, lively playing has been a great asset to the team. M. WRIGHT; (repeat colours) R.B. She has been a very accurate player and has combined well with L.B. in strong defensive play. D. WOOD; L.B. Although this has been her first season, she has proved to be a dependable player. She has made definite improvement in her style and adapted herself quietly to working with R.B. J. LEONARD; R.H. After an unsteady start, Jacqueline settled down to play a good game; she still tends to be inaccurate at times, but with more experience, maintaining her present rate of progress, she will make a very capable half.
C. JORDAN; (colours) C.H. Has adapted herself very well to the centre this season. Her main problem is to concentrate on distribution of the ball, in relation to the play in progress. E. FORD; L.H. A steady first season. Her tackling has improved a great deal, but is still marred by lazy footwork which often leads to obstruction. She must work hard on this weakness next season. G. CAVANAGH; R.W. A very successful first season. She has played a safe, simple but effective game, combining well with her inner. D. LUMBY; (colours) R.I. She has worked hard in the forward line and has proved a successful goal scorer. S. STAUNTON; (colours) C.F. A most reliable player. She has played exceptionally good hockey all season, keeping the forwards in line and on their toes. She used initiative in the circle and was the highest goal scorer. E. TOULSON; L.I. Ellen has boundless energy, but she must contain herself and learn how to control the ball and then her speed will be a great asset. She shows promise of being a first rate player. S. Butcher (Captain) S. BUTCHER; (repeat colours) L.W. She has worked with great enthusiasm and efficiency as Captain this season and has been worthy of the successful results of the team. She has maintained a high standard of play throughout the season and has used varied and skilful tactics at every opportunity. O.M. Walker Hockey 2nd XI The photo was provided by Janet Marston. Netball 1 st Team Back Row L-R: Sylvia Gaskell, Mr. Hamilton, Miss O. Walker, Christine Gaskell. Front Row L-R: Margaret Penny, Janet Noble, Gloria Farnsworth, Sheila Kelsall, G. Newton. This year the first team has only played four matches, several others being cancelled, Three of these, however, were lost and the fourth was drawn. There are two reasons for this poor record. First, although there were five members left from last year's team, the two empty positions were both defence positions and this has perhaps weakened the team. Secondly, with only a few fixtures, the team's attitude and enthusiasm have not been those expected from a first team and consequently consistent, hard practice has been lacking.there is a bright side to the picture, however, for the Juniors have done very well this season and have won all their matches. There are some very promising Juniors who should do well in the future. GLORIA D. FARNSWORTH MARGARET PENNY SYLVIA GASKELL ISABELL SNOWDEN JANET NOBLE SHEILA KELSALL CHRISTINE GASKELL Gloria D. Farnsworth, U.VI.A. Captain - Defence. A very efficient captain. She has worked hard to improve the standard of the teams this season, and has set a good example by her high and accurate standard of play. Repeat Colours. O. M. Walker Vice-Captain - Centre Attack. Her leaping and dodging are always outstanding and an example to the rest of the team. Repeat Colours. Attack. Although her spring for the ball from the centre pass is always good, her shots at goal have been unreliable. With more practice and hard work, she should become a most useful member of the team. Goal Shooter. This year her shots at goal, especially from the edge of the circle, have been outstanding, and her dodging in the circle has greatly improved. Colours. Centre. New to the first team this year, she has played some good passes, but must learn not to send 'loopy' passes. Centre Defence. Although not playing in her usual position of attack, she has shown herself worthy of the first team. She must, however, learn to control her passes and not to throw wildly. Goal Defence. Her height gives her an advantage over her opponents and she must make more use of this. Her defence play has improved and with more experience, she should be a very strong defence player.
